Chapter 16

Shock after shock tested Kathryn's limits. At that moment, her mind was reeling, paralyzed with fear. She didn't think she'd be able to take this any longer.

Chris, on the other hand, didn't look happy when he heard that Markus had found the best person for the job. "It's too late," he said, brows deeply furrowed.

Kathryn had no idea what he was talking about, but Markus did. It had been a month since they'd left Northvale, and that woman should be finding out whether she was pregnant or not by now. Once she found out, the worst outcome for Chris would be if she turned up on his doorstep pregnant with his child.

"So what should we do now?" Markus asked.

Chris refused to marry any woman his stepmother set him up with. "She's been planning for this for a long time," he said, smiling coldly. "We'll just have to ruin her plans."

How would she set him up with another woman when he was already married?

Kathryn was completely perplexed, while Markus knew exactly what Chris was talking about. "So we should find someone for you to marry?" he asked seriously.

Kathryn, taken by surprise, choked on her own saliva. She began coughing uncontrollably, breaking the serious atmosphere in the office.

Frowning, the two men looked at her. Frightened, Kathryn tried in vain to stop coughing. "Sorry!" Kathryn apologized before running out of the office.

She'd been shocked by the way they were discussing marriage in such an off-handed manner. They were talking about marriage, after all, not about breeding animals. Finding Chris' marriage partner was no easy feat!

Kathryn dashed to the pantry and drank some water to calm herself.

In the office, the conversation wasn't disrupted. "Do you have anyone in mind?" Markus asked Chris.

Chris stared at the cigarette in his hand. The air around him grew colder.

Ever since his mother passed away, that woman had been itching to control him. Now, she'd set her sights on the entire Albert family. He would show her that it wasn't as easy as she thought.

Taking a puff from the cigarette, Chris said, "Tell Kathryn to bring her identification papers tomorrow."

Hearing this, Markus was shocked. "Ms. Michaels?"

Chris hummed in agreement.

Markus's eyes darkened. He knew why Chris had chosen Kathryn; she was a nobody from the country, so she would be much easier to control than a socialite.

Marrying her would be the best solution. Then, once they got the footage restored, they would be able to deal with everyone involved. There was only one problem.

"Would she agree to this?" Markus asked worriedly. Kathryn might seem careless, but from the way she'd dealt with her clients in the past, she was clearly a headstrong woman. Absentminded, yes, but also logic-driven and independent.

Even if she appeared to be scared of Chris, there was still a chance that she wouldn't agree to marry him.

Chris' expression became chilly when he thought of the possibility of rejection. "Then she shouldn't be working here!"

Markus was speechless. To some degree, he was right, as Kathryn had made mistakes that night, resulting in this fiasco. She was the only one who'd had access to the damaged footage, and even though someone had entered Chris' room, she insisted that she hadn't seen anyone.

Plus, he also needed to look into how the footage had been damaged.
