SEVEN YEARS AGO
Malcolm opened the door to the house and stepped inside, closing the door behind him. The house was silent and no one was in the living room. Usually, he would meet his girlfriend, Yvette, sitting on the couch in the living room, her legs on the center table while she watched Television. Malcolm let out a smile at the thought. He walked further in the living room. “Honey, I’m home!” He announced as he dropped his suitcase on the table. He glanced around, wondering where his girlfriend was. “Honey?!” He called out again. “Babe?!”
A figure appeared at the top of his stairs. He looked up and it turned out to be his mother, Sarah Grayson. She walked downstairs and towards him, her wrinkled face lightened up in a bright smile and her hands spread out. “Hello darling,” she greets warmly, pulling him into a hug.
He encircled his arms around her waist. “Mum,” he said as they release each other. “This is a pleasant surprise. When did you get here?” He asked. “I had no idea that you will be here.” His parents rarely ever came to his house without informing him, so seeing his mother here was quite surprising.
“Oh, yeah. Your girlfriend invited I and your father over. She said something about a big news that she wants to announce,” Sarah said, waving her hands around in a dismissive manner.
A big news? Uhn. “Really? I had no idea. Where is daddy?” he asked her.
A large bulky figure in the shape of a man appeared from a corner in the room. “Hello son,” the man said, taking heavy steps towards them. “It’s wonderful to see you.” This was Malcolm’s father, Tom Grayson. He gave Malcolm a brief hug, patting his back lightly.
“Dad, what are you guys doing here?” Malcolm asked, still confused and still wondering where Yvette was. It was so unlike her to not be in the living room at this time, watching television and drinking wine. “What are you doing here?” he repeated.
“I invited them over,” Malcolm’s girlfriend, Yvette, said from the top of the stairs. Malcolm traced his gaze towards her and his face lit up in a smile as she climbed down the stairs and walked towards him.
They hugged each other and Malcolm gave her a simple kiss on her cheek. “Hey sweetie,” he greeted. “You didn’t tell me you were inviting my parents over,” he said, putting his arms around her waist and drawing her closer. He gave her a kiss on her temple and she snuggled closer to him.
Yvette placed her hands on Malcolm chest. “It was kind of an impromptu meeting,” she said. “Plus, I have some news I would like to share with the three of you.”
“Really? What’s that?” He asked curiously.
“Why don’t you freshen up and come downstairs for dinner? Then, we will talk about it,” she said, leaning in to give him a kiss.
Malcolm pursed his lips thoughtfully. “Alright,” he replied and headed towards the stairs. “I’ll be back in few minutes,” he said.
About twenty minutes later, he was back from his room. He had changed from his suit into a blue shirt and grey shirt. His parents and his girlfriend, Yvette were sitting at the already set table.
“Hey, I’m here,” Malcolm announced, giving his girlfriend a chaste kiss on her cheeks and taking his seat beside her.
“Okay, before we start eating,” Yvette started saying, “I just want everyone to know I made this meal.”
“Really?” Sarah Grayson asked in surprise. “Wow, Yvette, that’s interesting. This news must be a very important one. You don’t cook. Ever.”
Yvette beamed. “I know! But yeah, this news is important and it’s calls for celebration. So, everyone, dig in!”
They all opened their plates to the sumptuous meal in front of them. While his girlfriend and parents eagerly dug into their food, Malcolm was hesitant. He turned to Yvette. “Honey, what’s the news?” he asked with curiousness and uneasiness.
“Darling, eat your food first. We will talk about it,” Yvette replied, an excited smile on her face.
Malcolm was still reluctant but he did as she said and began to eat. While eating, the four of them chatted and laughed occasionally. When they were done, Tom Grayson cleared his throat. “Yvette,” He called, “we have finished eating like you asked us to. So, what’s the big news?”
“Well,” Yvette beamed. She paused, taking a look at the three of them. “I’m pregnant!” she blurted out, a wide smile on her face. She looked really excited and her eyes shone brightly.
Malcolm nearly choked on the water he was drinking. “What?!” He, Sarah andTom exclaimed.
“I’m pregnant,” Yvette repeated, still smiling widely. “I’m pregnant with Mac’s baby,” she said. "I'm pregnant!"
“Oh my God! Sweetie, that is good news!” Sarah exclaimed, standing up and walking towards Yvette. She bent and engulfed Yvette in a warm embrace.
Yvette hugged her back. They released each other and Yvette turned to Malcolm who had a stunned look on his face. “Baby, aren’t you excited for me?” she asked. “I’m having a baby! Our baby!”
Malcolm cleared his throat. “Yeah!” he said, smiling with forced enthusiasm. His mind was in a turmoil as he tried to think of the right words to say to his excited girlfriend. “That is good news! You are pregnant! Good news indeed. How am I just knowing about it?” he asked, trying really hard to hide the panicked and alarmed tone laced in his last words.
“I just found out this morning. Plus, I wanted it to be a surprise,” Yvette replied.
“Well, I am surprised,” Malcolm replied strangely, beads of sweats appearing on his forehead.
“So,” Tom Grayson said, the first time since Yvette announced the news of her pregnancy. “When is the wedding?” he asked, directing his question and gaze to Malcolm.
“What?!” Malcolm exclaimed.
Malcolm Grayson walks down the stairs, dressed in a black suit and trousers. He walks towards the dining table where his cook, Evelyn, is setting the table. Upon hearing his footsteps, Evelyn pauses her work, raises her head and sends him a smile. “Good morning, Mr. Grayson,” she greets politely.“Evelyn, good morning. How are you?” Malcolm asks just as politely, drawing out a chair to sit.“Fine. Where are Alex and Alexa?” she asked.“Sleeping. I decided to let them stay at home today. Brian and I will be conducting the interview here today,” Malcolm says to Evelyn and she nods before disappearing into the kitchen.Malcolm begins to eat his food slowly. He begins to think of the fact that this is one of the few times he eats breakfast at home. In fact, he can count on his fingers, the number of days he eats breakfast at home. Usually, by now, he will be on his way to work but he
Natasha forcefully pushed the door open and climbed out of the car, paid the driver, and waved him goodbye. Then, she rushed towards the monstrous gate that secured an equally monstrous house. The man in uniform by the gate assessed her briefly with his eyes before asking, in an extremely rude manner, “what do you want?”“I’m here for the interview,” she said in one breath, her chest heaving. The gateman glanced at her briefly again before opening the gate for her to walk in. She muttered a word of thanks under her breath and quickly walked in into the compound. If this was a normal day for her, she would have waited to admire the beautiful mansion that stood before her, the way the flowers were planted by the sides of the walkway, the statute of the grey lion that served as the fountain. However, this wasn’t a normal day today, Natasha was late for her job interview. So, she rushed towards the doorstep and rang on the doorbell. She waited, her heart in a mouth, for a few minutes befo
SEVEN YEARS AGONatasha slowly opened the door to the classroom and peeked her head through. She sighed in relief when she saw it empty. She pushed it open, walked and quickly closed the door, after which she slid into a chair and brought out a book to read. Reading in empty places was one of the things she enjoyed doing. She never liked reading in the midst of people or in crowded places. Aside from the fact that people gave her weird looks when they saw her reading, she also knew she would never be able to concentrate of she was in the midst of people. As she flipped the pages open from side to side, her mind drifted off to the new guy, Paul. A small smile unconsciously touched her lips as she thought of him. Paul. He was so nice and so sweet and of course, so handsome. This was his fourth day in school and he was fast becoming everyone’s sweetheart. He had a lovely voice and a beautiful smile. And he was sooo kind. Natasha knew him becoming popular in school was probably a red flag
Two hours later and Natasha had finally cleared up the playroom without any help from either Alex or Alexa. Alex tried to help, though, but he was just a little too playful and too small to be of any use. Alexa on her own part chose to sit on the couch and glare hard at Natasha while she worked. After clearing up the last bit of dirt in the playroom, Natasha slumped into the couch and sighs tiredly. She was about to close her eyes and drift off to sleep when she heard a small, high and saucy voice say, “Is that the work you were hired to do?” Her eyes shot open and she sees Alexa standing in front of her, her arms folded. She sad up, rubbing her eyes tiredly. She tried to compose herself and forces out a smile. “Alexa, sweetie, what’s wrong?”“I’m hungry.”“Um, alright, let’s go to the kitchen, then,” she suggested. “Your dad says you have a chef.”“Yes. Her name is Evelyn!” Alex quipped.“I don’t want her food,” Alexa said.“Why not?” Natasha asked. She could feel her frustration bui
Natasha dashes out of the ice cream shop, a frantic look on her face. Her heart was beating so loud and so fast that she could feel the impact on her chest. She just lost two kids to God knows what and God knows who. What was she going to tell Mr. Grayson? ‘Oh, hi, I took your kids for ice cream but they got lost somehow. But don’t worry, I’m sure we will find them.’ He was going to fire her! She couldn’t afford to be fired. This was the only job she actually had a shot at and now, she was about to lose that too because of her fucking carelessness!Natasha frantically walked by the side of the road, her eyes darting around to catch sight of Alexa and Alex. She was quite aware of the look she was being given by the people around her. She didn’t care, and she didn’t even blame them. She was well aware of how she currently looked. Her eyes were wild with distress, worry and fear, and she had pulled on her hair so many times in frustration, it was starting to look like a bird nest.At her
“Hey!” Natasha yelled, attracting the attention of Alex. “What do you think you are doing?” she demanded, stalking towards him. He had dipped his hand into his food and was messing about with it. She glared hard at him, snatching his arm, pulling him up and dragging him to the kitchen. “Hey, sorry for bothering you,” she said to Evelyn. “Alex needs to wash his hands. Again.”Evelyn nodded, turning away from them as Natasha turned on the faucet and held Alex’s hands firmly under the running water. She waited until the mess on his hands were gone, dried his hands with a kitchen towel and pulled him back to the living room. As she carried him and balanced him on the chair, she glanced at Alexa, who was simply staring at her dinner. “Why aren’t you eating, Alexa?” she asked.Alexa shrugged. “I was waiting for him,” she mumbled, referring to her brother. She picked up her spoon and began to eat.Natasha sighed and walked to the couch, slumping on it with her eyes closed. It was already alm
FLASHBACK – SEVEN YEARS AGO“You invited my parents to dinner without asking me,” Malcolm suddenly blurted out. This was hours after he and his girlfriend, Yvette had had dinner with his parents; after she dropped the bomb about her being pregnant; and after his parents began to bombard him with questions about marriage. He was currently lying on the bed dressed in a pair of shorts while looking at his girlfriend – nope, pregnant girlfriend – pulling off her earrings in front of the dressing mirror. From her reflection in the mirror, he could see her lips splitting into a wide grin. “Yeah,” she said. “Fun right?”“Fun? Maybe.” Definitely not.“I wanted them to be there when I announced my pregnancy. I knew they would be so happy.”“You couldn’t have told me first?” he wondered.A frown appeared on her face as she slowly turned around to face him. “I thought it would be nice to, um, give the whole family the news.”“Nice? Oh, yeah, definitely. You should have also invite my uncles and
Malcolm slowly unbuttoned his shirt and began to pull it off. He stood above his bed as he pulled off his shirt, vest and trousers, leaving only his pair of shorts. Some minutes after he had chased Natasha our of his house, he sat with his kids by the table to eat. Afterwards, he sent them up to their room while he retired to his office in the house. That was something he did often. No matter how hard he worked at the office, he always had other work to complete at home. A typical day for Malcolm involved waking up as early as four in the morning, going to work, returning home around eight in the evening and then, moving to his office at home till it was almost twelve in the midnight.Sighing, Malcolm lowered himself to the edge of his bed. His mind suddenly flashed back to Natasha, the young woman he had decided to employ at first, until she messed it all up by losing the kids. When he first saw Natasha, he couldn’t help but think that she looked familiar. He had seen her before. At
