Chapter 3

Author: Splendid Home
The ballroom gleamed resplendent beneath gold and crystal.

To catch Brandon’s confession in his own words, I slipped into the event under the guise of a server.

Across the hall, he stood at the center of a crowd of spoiled rich heirs.

Zane raised his wineglass with a smirk and said, "Back then, Bran embezzled money from the Hastings Foundation just to play the hero. And that fool of a girl actually believed he'd saved her."

Another young heir laughed loudly, as if deliberate so I could hear every word.

"Seriously. She was dirt poor. Toss her a little cash and she'd devote her whole life to you. She’d do whatever you told her."

Brandon frowned but didn't deny a single word. He simply took a leisurely sip of his wine.

"That's enough. Stop talking. She hasn’t had it easy either."

His lofty pity was even more revolting than outright insults.

I placed my tray on the table and quietly pressed the “save” button on the voice recorder hidden inside my pocket.

Just then, Brandon turned and spotted me in my plain server's uniform.

The gazes of the surrounding socialites and wealthy heirs with their undisguised contempt were sharp enough to sting.

A flash of panic crossed Brandon’s face. He strode over, seized my wrist, and dragged me into an empty hallway. His brows drew together.

"Who told you to come dressed like this and embarrass yourself? Are you deliberately trying to make me look bad?"

I met his gaze without emotion. Whatever warmth I still had left for him vanished completely.

He assumed my resentment stemmed from jealousy and intended to buy it away with money.

He then pulled out an unlimited black card and shoved it into my uniform pocket. He said, "Take this. Buy yourself some designer outfits, then stay backstage. Stop upsetting Quinny.

"Otherwise, don't blame me for what happens."

That was always his way. First the stick, then the carrot; believing this approach would smooth things over.

With a cold glare, I slapped his hand away without hesitation.

The black card landed softly on the plush carpet.

"Brandon... Do you really believe everything in this world can be bought?"

He paused before anger darkened his expression.

"What's gotten into you now? I'm trying to save you some face! Do you have to make a scene until everyone ends up embarrassed before you call it a day?"

“Save me some face?” I gave a faint laugh, letting my eyes drift over his immaculate tailored suit.

"Can something stolen... become respectable just because you wear it?"

His face changed. He didn't seem to grasp what I meant, but instinctively, he felt a twinge of unease.

"What are you talking about? Listen carefully, today is Quinny's showcase. Don't you dare ruin it."

He tugged irritably at his tie, unable to hide the uneasiness creeping across his face.

I ignored him completely and walked toward the backstage entrance.

Inside my pocket, my fingers closed around a vial of chemical reagent. My heartbeat remained unnervingly calm.

For five years, he had humiliated me with kindness that had never belonged to him.

Today, with my own hands, I’d send him straight to hell.

The backstage corridor was dimly lit. Quinn's assistant hurried past carrying an elegant presentation case.

Inside it rested Phoenix Pavilion, the masterpiece they had stolen from me.

Leaning against the wall, I sent a single text, [I'm ready.]

The screen lit up almost immediately, displaying a brief reply, [Wait for me.]

The host's voice rang out across the ballroom as the final showcase had begun.

Camera flashes erupted one after another, marking tonight as Quinn's crowning moment.

It was also the countdown to their downfall.

Several months later, the Aker family suffered a complete downfall. All of their assets were forcibly seized by the court. The once-arrogant Mr. Brandon Aker could no longer even dream of renting a decent basement. He did not end up wandering the streets, but every day, he had to rely on heavy doses of strong sedatives just to barely keep himself sane.Every day, he could only curl up inside a cramped rental room.During late nights, he could barely drift to sleep and could only do so by clutching the glass jar containing the ashes of his old journal while curled up on a narrow, damp single bed. That was the love he had personally burned away, yet now, it had become the sole reason for clinging to life.On a rainy afternoon filled with endless drizzle, Brandon returned like a lost soul to the old workshop where I used to run my kiln.Sloan had bought the place and converted it into the capital’s premier center for the restoration of intangible cultural heritage.Brandon hid in

The wind along the Seine in Paris carried the coolness of early autumn, sweeping away the gloom that had lingered for days.I stood on the Pont des Arts, watching the sparkling river below, and took a deep breath.Sloan walked over and gently pulled my coat tighter around me. Then, without warning, he went down on one knee.Unlike the typical suitors who would pull out a diamond ring, he took out an exquisite long rosewood box from his coat instead. He opened the box, and a hand-forged carving knife lay quietly inside. The curve of the handle was unusual, yet it perfectly avoided every scar on my hand."I had German ergonomics experts custom-make this specifically for your injured right hand."Sloan held my scarred right hand, his gaze filled with a reverence usually reserved for priceless treasures."Lily, I’m not forcing you to love me right away, and I don’t need you to give me an answer immediately."I know you still need time."He gently placed the carving knife into my

Brandon waited desperately downstairs outside Sloan's apartment for an entire night, standing in the pouring rain.He was soaked to the bone. His tailored designer suit hung in wrinkled folds, and his bloodshot eyes made him look like a stray dog with nowhere left to go.Early the next morning, Sloan's black sedan rolled out of the basement garage. The car stopped in front of Brandon, and Sloan stepped out beneath a black umbrella. Looking down at the pitiful man before him, he tossed a thick stack of documents straight into Brandon's face."These are the fund transfer records from back then, along with the fraud lawsuit my legal team drafted overnight."The papers scattered across the rain-soaked ground, but Brandon didn't even spare them a glance. His eyes remained fixed on the car window, desperately trying to make out what was inside.Sloan looked at him with both pity and contempt, as though he were staring at a pile of worthless trash."You stole my identity and deceived

After we left the venue, Sloan took me straight to his private luxury apartment.Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, the lights of Berrington glittered against the night sky. Yet, inside, the atmosphere was so quiet it felt safe.Sloan retrieved a bottle of medicated liniment and gestured for me to sit on the spacious sofa.Rolling up the sleeves of his dress shirt, he poured the liquid into his palms and rubbed them together until they were warm. Then, he began gently massaging the uneven burn scars and bruises that covered my right arm."Bear with it. The bruising has to be worked out. Otherwise, your arm will ache and keep you up all night whenever it rains."His voice was deep and gentle, his eyes filled with an unmistakable tenderness."You've spent the last five years making those pieces for him while carrying injuries like these?"I lowered my gaze without answering, simply enduring the burning warmth of the medicine on my skin. The day I overheard Quinn let something
