Clara's POV

I had been pacing the living room for over ten minutes, dialing Lydia's number on repeat. It kept ringing and I was getting no response. At the end of each ring, my anxiety grew.

I huffed in frustration, running my fingers through my hair.

Where could she possibly be? I kept asking myself.

I was just about to head up the stairs to check her room again, hoping she might have left some clues behind. But the sound of the front door opening stopped me in my tracks.

I rushed to the hall

Clara’s POV The cab drove into Damon’s duplex after a fifty minutes ride that felt like eternity due to traffic. I sat back in the car longer than normal, staring outside the surrounding that hold both painful and lovely memories. The porch light was on. Warm, yellow and bright as always. Six years. That’s how long it had been silence I left here with nothing but a broken heart and a thousand dollars. I sniffled, holding back the tear that threatened to spill. Today, I was back—“Ma’am.” The driver’s words snapped me out of memory lane. “Mr Adams would be waiting for you.” He muttered quietly, ignoring my gaze. “It’s fine.” I forced a smile, as I reached for the door handle. The evening air was chill and soothing on my skin; offering some sort of calms to my troubled mind. “Clara!” His voice called from ahead. He shut the door and headed towards me.I blinked, forcing my face into something neutral as he got to me. “Hey.”“I was starting to think you changed your mi

But the sound of the front door opening stopped me in my tracks.I rushed to the hallway to see who it was. There she was.Lydia walked in slowly dressed in running clothes and sneakers. She was panting heavily, sweats clung to her skin.“Lydia! Where were you? I've been trying to reach you.” I said, my voice a mix of slight annoyance and relief. She frowned clearly in confusion about my reaction.“I went on a run.” She said breathlessly. “I didn't think it would be a problem.I left my phone behind.”I closed my eyes, placing my hands over my forehead.“Just… next time, tell me

Clara's POVI remained seated where I was, finding it difficult to find the courage to get up from that very spot.I feared for a reason, because of the possibility that if I moved from there he might somehow sense that and there might be some complications. The guilt of not being with him during the start of the seizure gnawed at me.“Please forgive mummy for leaving you during your seizure.” I whispered, for perhaps the hundredth time.I knew the situation was over but during the episode itself I had never felt more scared in my entire life and I did not ever want to experience that again. The door opened but I did not bother to look at the person opening the door because I was staring directly at Maurice.“Clara…” Damon called out.I turned my head to face him, sniffling hard.“I understand that you’re trying to prove yourself, but you can always leave if needed.”“No Clara, I am not going anywhere.” he stated firmly.I nodded slightly and turned my attention back to Maurice.“You

Damon's POV It was two thirty in the morning. The hallway of the pediatric ward had never felt more suffocating to me.The fluorescent light was harsh in a way that I couldn't tell if it had always been this glaring or it was the knot of fear inside me that made it seem worse.A nurse hurried past me. Clutching a clipboard to her chest. She didn't spare me a glance, too focused on wherever she was headed.I had lost count of the number of times I paced the corridor waiting for the door to Maurice's room to open.As I turned, I caught my reflection in the small glass panel of a nearby patient’s door.I was still in the same shirt from the previous day. It was all rumpled up. My hair was a mess from repeatedly dragging my fingers through it and from the countless times I pulled at it in frustration.Dark circles lined my already bloodshot eyes due to lack of sleep. But still I couldn't for more than a few seconds before I resumed pacing the corridors again.Maurice's room door opened a

Clara's POV.I turned slowly, giving Lydia my full attention. Her hand slipped from mine, she clasped both hands tightly on her laps. Her gaze dropped to the table. She looked nervous and almost frightened.“What is it Lydia?” She looked up at me with a forced smile suddenly appearing on her face. “You've been so kind to me Clara.” She paused, as if carefully choosing her next words.“I've never met anyone like you to be honest. I really can't thank you enough for what you've done today.”I studied her quietly for a moment and I could see through her smile that there was something she wasn't saying. Beneath the smile, I caught something else. A flicker of guilt, fear, maybe even uncertainty.Whatever it was, it vanished as quickly as it appeared.I gave her a small nod. “You don't have to thank me Lydia , you can do that by just taking care of yourself and–my baby.”A smile spread on her face. A genuine one this time. “I won't fail you Clara.”“Good. Now I will take these to th

Clara's POVFor a trip that would take forty-five minutes, it was surprising how I got to the hospital in twenty. I pulled over in the parking lot and opened the car in a hurry. The moment I stepped out of the car, the humid air hit me, like a wall of heat. Ignoring it, I rushed into the clinic, breathless and already apologizing in my head for being late.“Hi, good afternoon.” I greeted the nurse at the reception desk. .She looked up at me, her expression cautious but polite “Hello, good afternoon, ma'am. How may I help you?” “I’m here for a Mr. Leonard. He has an appointment this afternoon.”“Okay, a moment please.” She said, turning to the monitor by her side. A few seconds later, she looked back at me “Is it Mr Leonard Grayson?” She asked“Yes.”She hesitated.“I’m sorry ma'am, he just left thirty minutes ago.”My stomach dropped .Slowly I lifted my gaze to a large clock mounted on the wall behind her.I was already two hours late.“Shit,”I muttered under my breath.I close

Clara’s POV The drive back home had been quiet for a while, the city’s lights moving past us in a complete blur. It wasn’t necessarily uncomfortably, just heavy like there was something unsaid sitting between us. My head rested against the seat, staring blankly out the window as we drove pas
