Murielle's POV

Colette didn't wait for me to finish.

She turned and walked away without a word, without even glancing back. If she'd screamed at me right there on the ridge, I could have handled that. Screaming meant she hadn't decided what to do with me yet.

Colette never made a scene before she ruined someone. She went quiet first, and by the time anyone noticed the damage, there was nothing left to trace back to her.

"She's not going to let this go," I said.

"I know." He didn't try to preten

Murielle's POV"I didn't ask," I said."No." Her smile didn't move. "You never do, do you."She didn't wait for anything else from me. She turned back to the visitors instead, already lifting a hand to dab at the corner of one eye like she needed a moment to compose herself."I'm sorry." Her voice caught, thick with something that would have fooled anyone who hadn't spent three years learning exactly what it sounded like when she wanted something. "It's just hard, seeing her like this. Knowing what she is, and loving her anyway."More visitors drifted closer at the sound of it, the way people always did. Colette let them gather before she went on, her voice rising just enough to carry further than a private moment should, pitched exactly for an audience that didn't know any better yet."I do think it's brave of her, coming today at all." Her voice broke a little, at just the right moment, and she pressed a hand to her own chest like the words cost her something. "After everything. I t

Murielle's POV Briony didn't wait for either of us to answer her. She turned and walked away, boots crunching over the dead grass. She was already halfway to the treeline before she spoke again, not bothering to look back."Get inside. Both of you."Then she was gone. The only proof any of it had happened at all was the cold still sitting in my chest where her words had landed.Rook didn't say anything either. His hand settled lightly against my back, guiding me toward the gap in the wall without a word. I let him. I didn't trust my own legs to walk straight just then.We didn't talk on the walk back. I kept turning Briony's warning over in my head instead. The same words circled again and again until they stopped sounding like a warning and started sounding like noise I couldn't turn off. Rook left me at the edge of the grounds, staying back so no one would see us together this close to the house. I already knew, before he was even out of sight, that sleep wouldn't come easily that

Murielle’s POV“Who’s there?” The voice cracked through the dark again, closer this time, boots crunching over the same dead grass we’d just been standing in, and I felt Rook’s arm go rigid around me a half second before the rest of me caught up.“I know I heard something. Show yourselves.”Torchlight swung low along the far wall, close enough now that I could make out the shape of a hand holding it, though not close enough yet for whoever it was to actually see us pressed back against the stone.I had maybe three seconds to decide whether being found like this was worse than being found at all. I never got to finish deciding.A hand closed hard around my wrist and yanked me sideways through a gap in the stone I hadn’t even known was there. Rook came with me, or maybe he was the one being pulled too, since everything after that first yank happened too fast for me to sort out who was doing what to whom.We ended up pressed low behind the second wall while the torchlight swept past on t

"Go back first. I'll wait a while before I follow."I went back alone, running through every version of what Colette might do with this, none of them good. The pack house was already tense by the time I got back, and not just because of me. Word had gone around that the King's official arrival was set for tomorrow, and everyone had thrown themselves into getting ready for it, scrubbing floors that didn't need scrubbing, polishing the same silver twice. Nobody wanted to be caught sta

Murielle's POV Rook opened his mouth to answer."Hey!"A pack member rounded the corner of the woodshed before he'd gotten out a single word, suspicion already carved into his face. His eyes swept over the two of us standing there instead of working."You think this is a break?" He grabbed Rook by the collar, fist already cocked back. "And you. Don't you know better than to go near her?""He didn't touch me," I said, stepping between them. "I tripped over his tools. He caught me before I hit the ground. That's all this was."He let go of Rook and looked around the ground behind us, searching for tools that weren't there, since there'd never been any tools to trip over in the first place."I don't see any tools." His eyes cut back to me, and whatever this had started as circled back into being entirely about me, the way it always did. "You probably knocked them out of his hands trying to get him alone. That's what you do, isn't it. Trick good men into trouble.""That's not—"His hand

Murielle's POVMy hands wouldn't close all the way the next morning.I stared at them in the washroom mirror, palms split open in three places from yesterday's rope. Dried blood cracked every time I tried to make a fist.A wolf whose shift still worked would have burned through an injury like this overnight without even noticing it happened. Mine didn't work that way anymore. Without my wolf, I healed the same slow way any human did, maybe a little faster on a good day, but never fast enough to matter. My ribs weren't any better either. Every breath still pulled tight against the bandages wrapped around them, aching worse than it should have a full day later.I hadn't eaten since yesterday morning. I only really let myself notice how hungry I was once I was standing there in the mirror, my stomach already twisting on itself.Someone had left a set of plain, rough-spun clothes outside my door the night before, the kind any omega on labor duty would wear, nothing like the soft things C
