Chapter 3

Author: Yvette Jane
The next morning, I woke up early, feeling restless.

Grandfather had texted back, saying he was already on a flight home and would be landing at Haryndale Airport tomorrow afternoon.

I had to get the signet ring back and file for divorce before then.

But Jessica would never agree if I brought it up now. So, I waited for her to bring it up first, so I could use it as leverage and say yes.

It didn't take long for my opportunity to present itself.

Jessica took a sip of the soup I made and frowned. "You can't even make soup right. It's too salty! What are you even good for? Let's just get a divorce!"

There was a flicker of excitement in both her and Cole's eyes, as if they were already anticipating the punishment I had to endure just to get back together for the 101st time.

But my reply was unexpectedly calm. "Okay. Let's get divorced."

Jessica jumped in before she even processed what I said. "Then for this round, your punishment is to go run naked in the park for five—"

She stopped mid-sentence, my words finally sinking in. Her eyes widened. "Did you just say okay?"

I replied, "Yes. I'll make it easy for you and Cole this time."

The first time Jessica brought up divorce was over the excuse of me wearing the wrong socks.

I stayed because I loved her and couldn't let go of what we had.

That pain of loving her but not wanting to lose her kept tearing at me repeatedly. Until eventually, my love ran out, and my heart was worn raw.

I finally realized that I might not even make it out alive if I didn't let go now.

Jessica laughed in disbelief and tossed her spoon aside. "Have you lost your mind?"

Then, as if reconsidering, she added in a condescending tone, "If you don't want to run out of embarrassment, you can switch to something else."

Cole let out an unhappy grunt, but was silenced by Jessica's sharp glare.

I shook my head, replying steadily, "No matter what the punishment is, I'm not doing it anymore. Give me back the signet ring, Jessica. Let's end this cleanly and get a divorce. Isn't this what you've always wanted?"

Cole's eyes gleamed when he turned to Jessica. But her gaze burned with anger as she glared at me.

"Fine! You want the ring and a divorce? Then go run naked in the park for five minutes tonight. Do that, and I'll give it back and get a divorce from you!" With that, she grabbed him and stormed out, knocking over the bowl of soup as they left.

I crouched down and cleaned up the mess on the floor, like I was picking up the pieces of my own shattered heart.

Jessica was unhappy when I begged her not to divorce me. She was still unhappy now that I agreed to it.

What she wanted all along was the satisfaction of humiliating me. It was her way of getting back at me for all the effort she once put into pursuing me.

But I was never the one who fell first in this relationship.

That night, I went to the park as told.

Before I even started taking off my clothes, I noticed four or five cameras hidden in the bushes, their lenses catching the light.

A chill ran down my spine.

Five minutes should have passed in the blink of an eye, but it was stretched out long in that moment.

The second it was over, applause erupted from the bushes.

Jessica laughed, delighted. "Not bad. Since you're willing to throw away your dignity, I'll agree not to bring up divorce again—"

I hurriedly put my clothes back on and cut her off. "Jessica, you said you'd give me the ring and divorce me if I ran for five minutes."

Jessica's expression darkened immediately.

Cole doubled over laughing while holding a camera. "You're still asking about the ring? Jessy already gave that thing to me long ago. Guess what? I thought it looked ugly, so I tossed it down the drain. It's probably sitting in the sewer by now."

My fists clenched, and I swung at his face.

The camera hit the ground.

Everything exploded like water splashed into hot oil.

"How dare you hit me!" Cole yelled as he took punches from me.

"Security!" Jessica's expression turned vicious as she called the bodyguards to pull me off him.

Cole immediately covered his face and hid behind her.

Jessica snapped, "I've clearly been too lenient with you in the past, Percy. You're even laying a hand on Cole now! I'm going to teach you a lesson today."

With a flick of her hand, more than a dozen bodyguards surrounded me, their fists landing like rain.

I couldn't fight off a dozen pairs of hands with only two hands myself. Very quickly, I was barely conscious on the ground, with blood at the corner of my mouth.

"Enough!" Jessica stood over me, pressing down her foot on my head as she ground it into the ground. "Remember this—I'll kill you if you ever touch Cole again."

Sure enough, I really would lose my life if this went on any longer.

Behind her, Cole looked at me smugly, mouthing the words, "You lost."

I forced out a faint smile. I wouldn't be losing if I didn't love Jessica anymore.

My phone chimed with a text from Grandpa. "I landed early, Percy. Where are you?"

The assistant rolled her eyes, then nodded firmly. "That's right."Jessica's eyes lit up. She pushed through the crowd to stand before me. "Percy, you're here to invest, right?"Her eyes were filled with hope. But unfortunately, she was about to be disappointed.I looked at Jessica expressionlessly. "I'm here to withdraw my investment. I'm taking back the 500 thousand dollars I gave you when you started your company."Jessica froze, then immediately pointed at my secretaries behind me. She screamed hysterically, "Are they the reason you're divorcing me? How could you betray me like this when I loved you so much? It's one thing if you cheat with another woman, but you have so many of them?"Everyone who didn't know the truth gasped when they heard the word "divorce".I shook my head calmly, then explained, "I stopped loving you the moment you started threatening me with divorce, just to humiliate me and make me a laughingstock."The room erupted in murmurs."Oh my, this is shock

Six months later, a giant screen overhead was playing live news in Haryndale Airport. "Sources say Graham Corp, the wealthiest corporation in Haryndale, has officially completed its leadership transition. "The new president is the former president's grandson, who reportedly appointed 12 women to his executive secretary team right after taking office. The move has sparked massive online debate, with shares and reposts already exceeding two billion."I was ushered into an SUV.Long-legged Secretary No. 1 placed a tablet in front of me. "This is the latest financial report of Justice Corp, Mr. Graham."Well-endowed Secretary No. 4 chimed in from the side, "Justice Corp has been losing money month after month for half a year. At this rate, they may not even be able to make payroll."I nodded and set the tablet aside.Back then, Grandpa had wanted to move against Justice Corp, but I quickly stopped him.Jessica wouldn't have been able to grow her company to what it became if it were

The moment Jessica pushed the door open, she saw a stranger sitting in the living room. The maid hurried over to explain. "Ms. Justice, this is the lawyer Mr. Graham hired to discuss the divorce."Cole's jaws dropped. "Percy can afford a lawyer?"Warmth drained from Jessica's face. Her expression darkened as she asked my lawyer, Mr. Greene, "How much is Percy paying you? I'll double it—tell him to come see me."Mr. Greene got up, offering a polite smile. "I'm afraid my fees are confidential. Besides, Mr. Graham has already left the country. That's why he's asked me to handle the divorce on his behalf."Jessica froze. "That's impossible. How could he afford to go abroad?""Don't tell me he stole—" Cole blurted it out before quickly covering his mouth.Jessica shot him a glance, then turned to the maid and barked, "Go check and see if any of my jewelry is missing!"The maid nodded respectfully. "None of your jewelry or cash is missing, Ms. Justice."Jessica's anger flared. "If n

On the 16th floor of the building, Jessica took a sip of hot soup and immediately frowned. "This tastes like water. I pay you people, and this is what you serve me?"The maid lowered her head, nervous and apologetic.Ever since I left, bringing meals to Jessica had become a nightmare. If the chicken soup was simmered too long, she'd say it was too greasy. If it was lightly cooked, she'd complain it was tasteless. The maid had been serving chicken soup repeatedly for days. She was so sick of it she felt nauseous just looking at chicken."M-Ms. Justice, this is already the fourth time the chef has remade the soup today," she stammered.Jessica set the bowl down hard. "You can't do your job, and now you're blaming me for being picky? Then how was it that Percy could make it right, but none of the chefs could?"The maid lowered her head even further. She couldn't believe how Jessica was saying that my cooking was good now, when she'd been complaining about it being salty back then.

The air seemed to freeze. I tightened my grip on the documents in my hand.Sweat beaded on Cole's forehead. He'd slipped the two agreements in with a stack of others, getting Jessica to sign them without noticing. If that came to light, he wouldn't walk away unscathed either.Cole stammered, "Uh… Jessy, I'm a little tired. Let's head back—"Jessica's sharp gaze snapped to him. He flinched and immediately shut up."What exactly are you holding, Percy?" Her voice was low, but the anger underneath was unmistakable.I hid the agreements behind my back and looked up at Jessica. "Nothing.""Yeah, yeah, it's nothing," Cole chimed in quickly, shooting me a look. "Why are you still here? It sickens me to see you around. Get lost!"Jessica said nothing, so I turned and walked toward the elevator. She remained silent even after I pressed the button.Cole let out a quiet breath of relief. The next moment, Jessica's cold voice rang heavy with pressure. "Did I say you could leave?"I tu

I struggled to type out a reply to Grandpa. "I'm in the north part of the city. I've got something to take care of. Wait for me."After I sent it, everything went black, and I passed out.I could barely hear bits of conversation around me."Let's go. We got the video. We don't need to bother with him anymore.""But what if he dies after we leave him here?""Don't forget we're only here because Jessica invited us. You think she won't come after us if we help him?"…In the end, they dumped me at the hospital entrance and left. A security guard spotted me and quickly called for the ER doctors.I had just been wheeled inside when a nurse rushed over. "Hurry, Dr. Jefferson. There's a VIP patient in the surgical department that needs you."Dr. Jefferson waved her off. "I already saw him. He just has a bruise on his face. He'll be fine with some rest. They've already got over a dozen doctors there. They don't need me."I forced my eyes open slightly. The harsh white lights made my
