Isla’s POV

The drive back to Dustfield felt longer than usual, the road stretched like it didn’t want me home. Maybe I didn’t either. The rain had started somewhere around the outskirts, soft at first, then heavier, pelting the windshield until the world blurred.

By the time I pulled into the driveway, my nerves were buzzing. I killed the engine and just sat there, staring at the dim porch light flickering like it was struggling to stay alive. Kind of how I felt inside.

The whole drive back, I

Zayne’s POVI watched Isla. She sat there, quiet in a way that felt heavier than screaming. Her fingers were laced together in her lap, knuckles pale, gaze unfocused as if she was somewhere far from this sterile room, far from the humming machines and the faint antiseptic sting in the air.She wasn’t talking. And for once, I didn’t have the strength to push.My body felt like it had been split open and stitched back together by someone who hated me. Every breath pulled at the wound in my side, a dull ache that sharpened if I moved too much. Even turning my head took effort. I was used to pain—but this was different. This was weakness layered on top of it, stripping me of control.“Hey,” I said quietly, my voice rough. “You don’t have to say anything.”Isla didn’t look up.“I’m not trying to corner you,” I continued. “Or pressure you. Whatever it is—you can tell me whenever you want. Or never. That’s your choice.”Her throat moved as she swallowed, but she still didn’t speak.Rico, on

Isla’s POVTears pooled in my eyes before I could stop them. He was awake. Not just awake—looking at me.Zayne’s lips curved into that lazy, infuriating smirk he wore like armor, the one that always said he was in control even when the world was burning. It didn’t belong to a man lying in a hospital bed, pale, stitched, hooked up to machines that beeped too steadily for my comfort.“You look like you’re about to cry,” he murmured, voice rough, low. “That’s new.”I laughed weakly, the sound breaking apart halfway. “You were shot.”“And yet,” he said, eyes flicking lazily over my face, “still devastatingly handsome.”He didn’t lie, not even a bit. He was still every handsome.I swiped at my cheeks, furious at myself for letting the tears fall. “You’re unbearable.”“Mm. You missed me.”Before I could respond, the door slid open quietly. Rico stepped in.His gaze landed on Zayne first, sharp and assessing, then flicked to me. The tension he’d been carrying seemed to ease just a fraction.

Isla’s POVA few minutes passed. Then a few more.Time in hospitals didn’t move the way it did everywhere else. It stretched. It stalled. It looped back on itself until seconds felt like minutes and minutes felt like punishment.I was staring at the same little crack in the tile across from me when a shadow fell over my shoes.I looked up sharply. Rico stood there.I hadn’t heard him approach. That alone sent a small jolt through me—my nerves were so frayed I was jumping at silhouettes now. He looked the same as he had when he left: jacket still on, jaw tight, eyes alert, like he’d never fully left whatever battlefield lived in his head.“What now?” I asked quietly. My voice sounded smaller than I wanted it to.Rico slid into the chair beside me, elbows resting on his knees. “We need to inform Aurora and Ronan.”The words landed heavy.I swallowed, my fingers curling into the fabric of my dress. “Do we?” I asked. “Is that… is that what Zayne would want?”Rico didn’t answer immediately

  • Brotherzoned: My Bestfriend’s Brother    Chapter 67 Blood and breath

Isla’s POVThe hospital loomed ahead, its harsh lights slicing through my face. My chest heaved with each step as I ran, the keys to Rico’s car still clutched in one hand. I burst through the sliding doors of the emergency entrance, breath rattling in my chest. Nurses and orderlies rushed past me in a blur of white coats and sneakers. Monitors beeped urgently somewhere ahead. The scent of antiseptic was sharp, almost choking me, but I didn’t stop. Not for a second.“Where is he? Zayne—he was shot on his arm!” My voice cracked as I skidded toward the front desk.A young nurse replied to me. “Ma’am—please calm down—he’s in trauma. We can’t just—”“I don’t care about protocol!” I snapped, forcing my panic into every word. “Which room? Who’s taking care of him?”She swallowed, visibly intimidated by the raw panic in my tone. “He was taken to OR 3. Doctors said they were prepping him for surgery. It’s—uh—emergency level, but they’ve stabilized him for now.”I didn’t wait, I spun and raced

  • Brotherzoned: My Bestfriend’s Brother    Chapter 66 Is she out of her damn mind?

Isla’s POVWhen I turned fully, breath trembling to see she was on a call, she ended the call with a swipe of her thumb. Her eyes were already on me—steady, composed, almost too still. She mouthed slowly, concern flickering through her face:Are you okay? You look pale…I plastered the quickest smile I could manage. It felt wrong on my face, stretched thin like it would crack with the slightest pressure. My throat closed the second I looked back at the corridor—empty. Moments ago, they carried him—dragged him, Zayne—bleeding, unconscious, towards the inner corridor. And now—Nothing. Silence. A hollow corridor swallowing every echo.Isabella’s heels clicked closer. “What are you looking at?” she asked, glancing inside the corridor. “Did something happen?”For a second, guilt stabbed my chest. She didn’t know. No one inside the hall knew. The entire wedding hall could possibly be soundproofed—the screaming, the shots, even my own voice tearing out Zayne’s name outside… all of it had be

Isla’s POVBANG.The gun fired. Zayne jerked violently backward, the force spinning him half-around, his grip on me tearing away as he stumbled. Pain cracked across his face—real, sharp, uncontrolled.“ZAYNE!” I screamed again, sprinting toward him.His hand clutched his shoulder, blood seeping between his fingers, his dark shirt quickly became saturated with blood. He staggered, knees buckling—And I caught him before he hit the ground.“Stay with me,” I whispered, voice trembling. His breath left him in a sharp groan. “Fuck—Isla—get down—”But another burst of gunfire erupted, too close, too loud. We dove behind a walkway pillar just as bullets ripped through the vines overhead. My heart felt like it was breaking through my chest. Zayne’s body was heavy against mine, warm, trembling, and wounded.I pressed my hand over his. “It’s okay, it’s okay—just stay with me—”His eyes snapped to mine, wild with pain and something else. Fear. But not for himself.“For once,” he hissed through c

Zayne’s POV The push-up count stopped at thirty. I could’ve gone to fifty, maybe sixty, but my mind wasn’t keeping pace with my body. Every time I exhaled, Isla's face flashed. The glasses. The trembling hands. The soaked hair plastered to her cheeks. I dropped to my knees and sat back on my hee

ZayneI hated rain. Always had. But tonight, as I pulled into Dustfield, I didn’t even notice the slick, wet streets or the faint drizzle settling on the windshield. I parked outside the house, hands tight on the wheel. My chest was a little tighter than usual, and I hated the faint pulse of relie

Isla The drive to Dustfield was long and silent. Rain pelted the windshield, blurring streetlights into golden smears. My chest ached, and tears refused to stop. Every blink smeared them further, leaving streaks across my cheeks. My thoughts were a tangled mess of betrayal, fear, and curiosity. A
