Aria’s POV

Present Day

“So I do remember that semester you guys had all the same classes and that you and Jalen became pretty friendly, but he didn’t know you were the witch’s roommate,” Nia says.

“Correct. Well, at first, he didn’t.” I nod, sipping down some of my juice.

“Well, how did he find out you were Talia’s roommate?” she asks.

I look at her and scoff. “How did you forget, girl? It was a complete shit show, and you were right there.”

Flashback

Third week of school Tuesday after Labor Day weekend

After returning from my modest home in the south suburbs of Chicago, I headed straight to my bestie’s shared campus apartment. I needed critical eye help, and Nia was always that for me.

This no-nonsense chick was my savior from day one. She was part Native American, part African American, with radiant cinnamon-toned skin and the kind of bone structure that stopped boys mid-sentence. People were constantly drawn to her, but her heart had only ever belonged to one person, Matt.

Matthew, or “Matt” to everyone who knew him, was 6’2" of walking temptation. A muscular god with wavy brown curls, piercing gray eyes, and golden tan skin that looked like it had been kissed by the sun. They’d been together since they were 17 and were pretty much attached at the hip ever since.

I knocked hard on the door, eager to get her opinion on the dresses Lucia had given me. I barely raised my fist to knock again before the door flew open, and there was Matt, shirtless, glistening, and clearly annoyed.

Which only meant one thing: I had interrupted something, and I don't think he was exercising in the regular sense.

"Hey, Aria. Come in," he groaned, stepping aside.

Yep. I think it was sexy time.

And sure enough, when Nia stepped into view, hair wild, shirt half on, no bra in sight, it was confirmed. It's definitely a workout session of the sex orientation.

Matt leaned in, grabbed her ass and kissed her cheek before heading toward the bathroom. “I'm taking a cold shower. We’ll finish what we started later.”

Nia rolled her eyes playfully. “What’s up, girl? What's the emergency?”

I held up the big bag of dresses Lucia gave me, " Girl, I need help."

Nia squealed. “Finally! We can show these people how beautiful you are.”

I grimaced. “I’m too fat to wear this stuff, Nia.”

“Girl, fuck that,” she said, giving me a look. “Yeah, your body is bigger, but you’re thick in all the right places. You're shapely and proportionate, especially that booty you always hide under those giant shirts.”

I sighed. “Okay… so, which one first?”

“Let’s go to the guest room. Try them all on. I’m gonna get dressed and be back in five.”

I changed into the first one, a short baby doll floral dress with a frilly sweetheart neckline and a hem that hit mid-thigh. When Nia walked back in, now looking more like her polished self than the aftermath of a category five sex storm, her eyes lit up.

“Bitch, that’s cute!” she gasped. “Try another one!”

I changed into a mustard yellow sleeveless hoodie dress, midlength, and shockingly flattering. Lucia’s daughter must’ve loved this style because she gave me five in different colors.

Then came the third one. A long, black fitted wrap dress. It hugged all the right curves, smoothed over the stomach I always worried about, and made my ass pop.

“Oh shit girl, that’s the style for you,” Nia said, jaw dropping.

“Wow,” was all I could say.

“Now you can stop living in that uniform of jeans and oversized T-shirts. Just sometimes.”

I laughed, but I decided to throw the yellow one back on.

“Good. Now let’s do your hair. And since you pissed my man off, I’m gonna go back with you to your condo and thank Lucia in person so he can calm down.”

I chuckled as she started gathering her hair products. Nia always had this magic touch with hair, literally. I needed whatever miracle products she used because my hair never laid correctly. She pulled it into a cute, messy bun with a few curly strands falling out in the perfect way.

When I looked in the mirror, I barely recognized myself.

“See? Gorgeous,” Nia said proudly. “Now pack your stuff. I’m throwing on my Crocs, grabbing my keys and phone, and let me go tell Matt I’ll be back.”

I laughed again and met her at the door, still glowing from her confidence, and maybe, finally, seeing a little bit of what she saw in me.

As we laughed and walked back to my condo, I noticed a few guys watching us from across the street. Probably checking out Nia—most men did. She was effortlessly beautiful, and she carried herself like she knew it.

As soon as I unlocked the front door and stepped inside, we were greeted by chaos.

The screeching voice of the wailing banshee, aka Talia, echoed through the space. “Why don’t we have any almond milk?!” she shouted at poor Lucia, who looked like she was just trying to breathe through the moment.

I made my way into the kitchen, ready to calm things down, but then I saw him.

There he was.

Jalen.

Sitting casually at the counter, eating a sandwich like he wasn’t witnessing a verbal homicide. The sight of him took me aback, not just because he was there, but because he said absolutely nothing. Not a word. Not to her, not to me.

“Maid! You are so fucking incompetent!” Talia screamed again.

I froze.

Jalen didn’t flinch.

Was this the same guy I had been talking to almost every day for the past two weeks? The one who laughed at my jokes, remembered the little things, and made me think he might actually see me?

“Excuse me, Talia,” I said, trying to keep my voice even.

She whirled around, eyes blazing. “What, Plushy, do you want now?”

Nia’s head snapped toward her. “What the hell did you just call her?”

I instinctively grabbed Nia’s arm before she could pop off. “Don’t,” I whispered. “It’s not worth it.”

Then I turned and pointed to the refrigerator. “Tony left a note. There was a recall on the almond milk. He picked up an alternative, cashew milk.”

Talia stomped over to the fridge, snatched the note, read it, then rolled her eyes dramatically.

She turned to me, scanning me up and down. “So, Plushy, you’re trying a new look now? Cute. Too bad you’re still fat.”

My stomach tightened. I felt my confidence deflate in an instant like a balloon with a slow leak.

I glanced at Jalen again.

Still nothing.

No defense. No smile. No acknowledgment. Just... blank.

The silence cut more than her words did.

I swallowed hard, trying to keep my expression neutral. “ Talia, you need to calm down and leave Lucia alone. Come on, guys. Let’s go to my room.”

Without another word, we walked off, the weight of her insult and his silence heavier than anything I was wearing.

Jalen’s POVWednesday – Meeting ContinuedWell, fuck me sideways. It was like a cluster bomb of revelations just detonated in my face. Not only is Aria the damn owner of Bright Initiative Group, but she’s also my brother’s sister-in-law. That resemblance between Amara and her? Yeah, well, it turns out it’s not just me losing my mind. They’re actual sisters. And the kicker? Patrick knew. Patrick fucking knew this whole time. My little brother has been sitting on the ultimate family secret, hanging around with the people running Bright, while I’ve been clueless, buried in business deals and assumptions. Jesus, maybe I need to actually talk to him once in a while instead of assuming I’ve got everyone figured out.The smell of carnitas and fresh tortillas pulled me back to the present as we lined up at the taco bar. Vlade, the smooth bastard, didn’t waste a beat.“So, Mr. Todd, are you excited for the twins?” he asked. Before I could even open my mouth, my father jumped in like a politici

Aria’s POVWednesday, 9:45 AMRing. Ring.I glanced at the caller ID on my desk phone, Anila, our receptionist.“Mrs. Schultz-Todd has just arrived,” she said.“Thank you, Anila. Text me when the Todds get here. I’ll be in Vlade’s office.”“Yes, Ms. Childs.”I slid my iPad and phone into my hand, smoothed my jacket over my burgundy suit, and headed to Vlade’s office. I knocked once, and his rich, accented voice called, “Come in.”He was leaning back in his chair, studying me like a coach before the championship game.“You ready for this?”A slow smirk spread across my face. “Of course.”As if the universe wanted to cue the drama, my phone buzzed from Anila’s text. The Todds are here.“Perfect,” I murmured, firing back instructions: Send them to Conference Room A. Alan and Reese should already be in there, distracting themselves with food.I lifted my iPad again, adrenaline sparking under my skin. “Let’s do this shit and try lock down information of any open properties for Michael’s ho

Jalen’s POVWednesday Morning – 6:30 a.m.I woke up already wired, nerves buzzing under my skin. I pulled on my workout clothes, but my head wasn’t in it. Not only had Aria dodged FaceTime last night, she hadn’t even answered my text.My brain spun on overdrive as I started the treadmill, legs pumping harder and harder. All I could picture was her across a table from some muscle-bound clown in a tailored suit, kissing her hand, sliding food off his plate onto hers. Was that why she hadn’t texted back? Was she still with him?Did she… sleep with him?The thought made my stomach flip, my chest burn. I cranked the speed higher, punishing myself with the pace until my foot slipped.“Shit!” I yelped as I flew back, landing hard on my ass and slamming into the wall. Pain shot up my back, my hand scraped raw.I lay there for a second, cursing at the ceiling, before dragging myself up and shutting off the machine. My phone screen lit up, still no reply from her. My jaw clenched. In the ensuit

Aria’s POVTuesday — 2:30 PM, Board Room 3“Alright, Aria, how are we introducing you as the owner and CEO of Bright Initiative Group?” Reese said as he leaned forward, his voice full of energy, like he had been rehearsing this moment all morning.I folded my hands on the table, calm and steady. “Same way we’ve done it before in the past. Everyone on the team comes in, gets some breakfast refreshments, and we introduce the team to them one by one. NDAs first. If they don’t sign, they leave with whatever story we’ve crafted for the outside world.” I glanced at Vlade. “And for now, the story is still you.”Vlade smirked, that quiet confidence of his always filling the room. “Good. I’ve already pushed new concepts for the cruise liners. More inclusivity, different families, and dynamics that actually look like the world we live in. People want to see themselves represented, not just the fantasy.”“Exactly,” I said, nodding. “Alan and Kim make sure all the iPads are prepped. Presentation

Jalen’s POVTuesday morning — 7:30 a.m.The steam from my shower did nothing to wash Aria off my mind. Her last text replayed over and over that she had an appointment tonight. I didn’t want to admit it, but the word sat wrong with me. Appointment meant planned. Appointment meant intentional. Appointment could damn well mean another man.I let the hot water burn across my shoulders until it went lukewarm, hoping it would drown the knot in my chest. It didn’t.By the time I dressed and made it down the stairs, the sound of raised voices had already ruined my morning.“What is this shit, protein shakes and rabbit food again?” Amy’s voice carried through the kitchen like nails on a chalkboard. “Why can’t you make pancakes, bacon, eggs? You know, like real food.”Kira’s calm response made me proud and irritated all at once. “This is the menu that Mr. Todd requested, Amy.”Amy laughed, smug. “Maybe you should just start making my breakfast right now. Unless you want me telling Mrs. Todd ho

Just use the one you screen shotted from Matt’s IG page.Me: So you know about that?Beauty: Yes and no. You weren’t too discreet about liking the photo. Plus, I was next to Matt when you liked it, so I assumed you screenshotted it. So… yeah, you just told on yourself.Fuck. I chuckled, shaking my head as I relaxed inside my home office, phone in hand. She had me smiling like a damn fool, just sitting there grinning at her text bubbles. We’d been going back and forth since she got out of the shower and started winding down for bed.And in my head? I pictured her in a black silk nighty, maybe with a robe tossed somewhere on the floor. Maybe nothing at all, because she’s the type to sleep naked.Me: So are you gonna send me a picture of you in your night clothes or what?Beauty: No, so you can jerk off to me? Not happening.Me: Please… Love.Beauty: No, I am not. But I can FaceTime you.…
