Chapter 4

Author: Mochi Hamster
The last bit of affection in Christine's eyes disappeared completely.

She bent down and brushed her slender fingers against my twisted, pain-stricken face. Then, she suddenly smiled.

"It's only a face. Why are you so concerned about it? You know I never leave my sword behind. Yet you actually used the ridiculous excuse that my sword was poisoned just to make me take you to a physician.

"Jonathan, we've known each other since we were children. You should know better than anyone that I've never been someone who cares about appearances."

The tears at the corners of my eyes slid down onto the back of her hand.

Christine immediately pulled her hand away, as if she had been burned.

Looking at her reaction, I endured the pain and spoke slowly.

"Christine, remember this. The pain you caused me today, I'll return it to you twice over someday."

Nathan immediately stepped forward, his face filled with indignation as he stood in front of Christine.

"Jonathan, it's one thing if you don't thank my wife, but why would you curse her? If your appearance truly matters that much to you, then I'm willing to ruin my face with you today. I only ask that you and my wife let go of the resentment in your hearts."

After saying that, he snatched the sword and pretended to drag it toward his own neck.

But in the next second, Christine knocked the sword away with a burst of force from her palm.

Nathan fell into her arms.

Christine's eyes were filled with anger.

"Nathan, why would you do something so foolish? You're always thinking about Jonathan, but has he ever spared a single thought for you?"

She glanced coldly at me lying on the ground, my body still shaking from the pain.

A cruel smile appeared on her lips.

"Jonathan, according to military rules, those who make mistakes must pay the price."

Her words made the unease in my heart grow stronger.

"What exactly are you trying to do?"

The next moment, she ordered someone to bring in a coffin.

"I've thought it through. Since you'll have to be buried with Princess Selena sooner or later, it's better if I send you to the palace ahead of time. That way, I can rescue you sooner."

After saying that, she ordered the servants to place me inside the coffin.

"No. Christine, you can't do this to me! I've been poisoned. I won't even survive long enough for you to come and save me!"

The sound of me desperately pounding against the coffin lid did nothing but make the coldness in Christine's expression deepen.

She turned to the servants.

"Seal the coffin tightly. Use wax oil to close it completely. Jonathan knows how to hold his breath anyway. This will also prevent the people in the palace from being frightened when they see his face."

The servants carried the coffin into the palace, announcing that the person inside was Selena's future husband.

Three days passed in the blink of an eye.

It was the final deadline the royal physicians had given for Selena's life.

As a female general, Christine had already brought Nathan and the rest of her family to the palace to pay their respects.

But the moment she stepped inside, she froze.

There were no black funeral banners anywhere.

Instead, a white velvet carpet stretched beneath her feet, leading all the way to the Azure Palace, where Selena lived.

Bright lamps hung from the beams overhead. The palace servants were smiling brightly, and the surrounding ministers were offering congratulations.

Christine frowned, confusion flashing across her face.

"What is going on? Isn't this a funeral? Why is everything..."

Before she could finish, a nearby minister interrupted her.

"General Smith, could it be that you haven't received the news yet?"

Christine's heart tightened. Her fingers curled like claws as she grabbed the minister by his collar.

"What happened?"

But before the minister could answer, the voice of a palace attendant rang out from nearby.

"Princess Selena and her prince consort have arrived. Clear the way immediately!"

A faint, unfamiliar fragrance drifted into my nose.It wasn't the scent that belonged to Selena. In an instant, I lifted my wedding veil."Christine. I knew it was you."Standing before me was Christine, dressed in a white wedding gown. Seeing that I had recognized her so quickly, the joy in her eyes was impossible to hide. She hurriedly closed the door behind her and grabbed my hand."Jonathan, come with me right now."I forcefully pulled my hand away."Christine, have you lost your mind? Today is my wedding with Princess Selena. If I call for the guards, your life will be over in an instant!"My words didn't affect her at all. She continued looking at me with the same deep affection she had always shown."Jonathan, you don't need to be afraid of her. Since I was able to come here, I already have a way to get you out safely. I've made arrangements with people from Eldoria. They're waiting outside the city to receive us."Their king has promised that once I arrive in Eldoria

Selena was stunned for a moment. But soon, she would understand exactly what I meant.Half a month later, an urgent report arrived from the front lines.Christine had led 30,000 soldiers to attack the kingdom of Eldoria, but she was completely defeated by an army of only 10,000.Not only did she lose 5,000 elite soldiers, but she had nearly been shot through the heart and captured as a prisoner.Rumor had it that she had begged Salvador to give up one city in exchange for sparing her life.On the day she returned to the capital to report, Salvador's face was dark with anger.Giving away a city had not only humiliated him but also destroyed the reputation her ancestors had built over generations of military achievements."Your Majesty, the enemy used a cunning scheme. I was careless and fell into their trap. Please grant me another 20,000 soldiers. I swear I will capture every city in Eldoria."Salvador threw the report in his hand directly at her. He was so furious he nearly p

"Everyone in the city knows that we've been engaged since childhood. No matter how powerful Princess Selena is, she has no right to interfere in this matter. You don't need to worry about my future. I've made twelve great contributions to the kingdom. His Majesty would never punish me too harshly."As she spoke, Christine's face was filled with unwavering confidence. The palace guards quickly surrounded her.Selena was so furious that she actually laughed."Christine, let go of my prince consort. Otherwise, don't blame me for what happens next."I struggled desperately, but Christine only tightened her grip around my wrist."Jonathan is mine. Not even you can change that, Princess Selena."I looked at her coldly."Christine, do you really think you're some legendary beauty everyone would die for? Right now, I'm Her Highness's prince consort. What makes you think I would willingly become your husband?"After I finished speaking, I tried to pull my hand away. But Christine held

The expressions of everyone present changed, yet Nathan continued speaking to me as though he were completely unaware."Jonathan, I've given up my place for you. Are you happy now? From now on, one of us will become Her Highness's prince consort, while the other will become the husband of a female general. Together, we'll make a powerful team. I'm sure even Father will be proud of us."I looked at him strangely."Nathan, have you lost your mind?"The excitement on Nathan's face instantly froze.Selena laughed coldly."Do you take me for some beggar who picks through scraps? A man who has already been used by someone else actually dares to dream of becoming my prince consort?"The ministers around us immediately burst into laughter."Today has truly been entertaining. I never thought the Prime Minister would have such a shameless illegitimate son. The moment he heard Princess Selena was dying, he rushed to seduce his own sister-in-law. Now that the princess has recovered, he can

A cold, dangerous look appeared in Selena's eyes. She was about to speak when I dismounted from my horse."General Smith is right. However..."Before the joy in her eyes could appear, I abruptly turned the conversation around, my voice taking on a hint of cold amusement."Didn't you personally beg me that day to give up our marriage and let Nathan take my place? Yet today, in front of Her Highness, you're bringing up our past again. What exactly are you trying to achieve?"Christine hurriedly stood up. Her eyes were bloodshot as she looked at me, filled with both panic and hurt."Jonathan, we already agreed that..."She stopped herself before finishing the sentence. After all, revealing the truth now would be treason against the king, Salvador Winchester.I raised an eyebrow, and the smile on my lips grew even colder."Agreed on what? That you would have me replace Nathan and marry Her Highness so I could be buried with her? That I should hold my breath inside a sealed tomb f

Christine's heart jolted violently. Her eyes soon found me. Mounted on my horse, I wore a metal mask and white wedding attire, looking every bit like someone who belonged above the mortal world. His expression twisted with disbelief and resentment. From where I sat, I quietly took in the hatred and unwillingness in Nathan's eyes.Christine stood frozen in place, unable to move, until the leading guard's furious voice rang out."General Smith, step aside. Do stand in the way of Her Highness and her prince consort's wedding ceremony!"Inside the carriage, Selena had rosy cheeks and bright, lively eyes. There was no trace of someone who was supposedly on the verge of death.Unable to believe what she was seeing, Christine murmured the question in her heart out loud."Why... is the princess still alive?"The moment those words left her mouth, everyone around her changed expressions. The guards immediately shouted."How dare you!
