Chapter 3

Author: Alley
Life was tight. We didn't have the money for college at all. I had planned to go work right after high school.

But in my senior year, I met Hannah Hayes, the girl whose smile was as bright as sunlight.

She became a beam of light in my dim life.

We studied together, ate in the cafeteria together, and secretly held hands after late study sessions while whispering our feelings to each other.

She even made a promise with me that we'd get into the same college and openly have a grand, passionate romance.

Because I didn't want to disappoint her, I still took the entrance exam and got into the school she wanted to attend.

But reality forced me to face the truth.

On the day the acceptance letter arrived, I told her I couldn't go with her, because I was too poor.

She didn't look down on me. She took me home to meet her family.

Her parents agreed without hesitation to pay all my college expenses.

On that point, the Hayes family did have a kindness toward me.

But that still wasn't enough to make me give up the money for the house to save Hannah.

I waved my hand. "Don't guilt-trip me. You paid for my college, and I let your daughter be with me for all these years for free. If we do the math, I'm the one who lost money."

Suddenly, an insulated food container smashed down from above my head.

A patient among the crowd couldn't stand it anymore and cursed me.

"You're worse than a pig or a dog!

"These people are already miserable, and you're repaying kindness with cruelty. You drained your marital savings to buy your mother a house, and now you're coveting the old couple's apartment. I've never seen anything like this!"

Then all kinds of random objects came flying at me.

"Beast! How does a scumbag like this stay alive?"

"Why don't you die in place of good people?"

Hospital security rushed over and held them back. That was the only reason I wasn't beaten.

I was so angry I stamped my foot, grabbed my stained clothes, and shouted at my in-laws, "Are you satisfied now? This outfit cost two thousand dollars. It's ruined. I don't care, you're paying me back in full!"

"What?!"

Marjorie's voice was so sharp it nearly cracked.

"Two thousand dollars! Jason Cole, our family isn't rich. My daughter worked so hard for every bit of money, and you squandered it like this. She never said anything, so why can't you save her?"

Just then, the doctor who had returned to the operating room came out again.

"The patient's blood pressure is dropping. Her heart rate is dropping. If this drags on, forget the organ, she won't survive!" the doctor said quickly. "Are we removing it or not? Decide now!"

Marjorie screamed.

"No! Don't remove it! We'll find a way to raise the money! We'll find a way!"

She spun around to face me.

She seized my arms so hard her nails drew blood.

She didn't even notice.

"Jason! I'm begging you. Save her!"

I didn't move.

"Jason!" She grabbed my arm and held on tight. "Do you remember? In senior year, you caught a fever and she ran out in the rain to buy you medicine. She got caught by the dean and was written up for a major disciplinary violation. She said it was worth it!"

My fingers twitched.

I remembered.

It had been raining that night. She ran back soaked from head to toe, clutching a box of fever medicine and grinning foolishly as she handed it to me.

"Take it. You'll feel better after you take it."

The next day, the whole school heard her disciplinary notice.

She stood up in front of the whole school at assembly and read her apology aloud, but her eyes kept glancing toward me as she secretly smiled.

"Jason!" Marjorie kept pleading, her voice cracking. "In college, she had fifteen hundred a month for living expenses. She kept five hundred for herself and gave you a thousand. She said you loved meat and wanted you to eat more."

I remembered.

Every time she came to see me, she took me to the cafeteria and ordered the most expensive dishes.

When I said it was too expensive, she always smiled lightly. "It's fine. I don't like meat. You eat it."

Only later did I find out she had spent an entire month living on nothing but bread.

"I checked the pawnshop transaction records. Your name and Adrian's name were written on them. You pawned it for seventy-five thousand dollars back then!"I was so agitated my entire body trembled."Do you know what that was? That was our family's heirloom! The only thing my father left us to remember him by!"From that day on, I started suspecting you. I installed hidden cameras in your car and in your home."And everything I saw was so filthy it made me sick."Just then, a group of police officers walked in.They immediately put handcuffs on them.Adrian struggled like a madman."Why are you arresting me? They did everything! It has nothing to do with me!"Hannah said she had liked me since we were children. She's the one who stole that pendant to please me!"Maya walked out from the crowd. She stood beside me."Your crime really doesn't have anything to do with those things."She took out a document and displayed it in front of the cameras."But you can't escape this o

"So, the little girl came."Sure enough, after I fell completely in love with her, that man's company came back to life, her father's cancer recovered, and everything improved."But then they grew greedy again."The man's son wanted to study abroad, but the man refused. So his son went to his childhood friend, the girl who had approached me."He had her use me to steal the heirloom my mother had hidden away."It was a rare emerald pendant. At the time, I didn't know how much it was worth. I thought it was only worth a few thousand dollars."Only later did I find out it sold at auction for seven hundred fifty thousand dollars."Hannah screamed at me like she had gone mad."Stop talking! I'm begging you, stop talking!"I ignored her."The woman in this story is Hannah Hayes's mother. Marjorie."The man is Adrian Pierce's father."Marjorie's face turned deathly pale at once. She waved her hands again and again."No! No! Don't listen to him! He has no proof! He's making it all

"Fake!" she screamed. "It's fake! Jason Cole, you've used this trick countless times! You edited it! It's synthetic!"Adrian reacted too, looking deeply wronged."Jason, how could you do this? I have no grudge against you. Why are you framing me?"Those friends echoed him."Exactly! It must be edited!""Jason, can you stop making a scene?"I looked at the smug gleam in their eyes. Then I took another document from my bag."This is an authentication report from an authoritative agency."This video is not synthetic. It's the original footage."The crowd was in an uproar again.Hannah's face went completely white."Even if it's real!" someone in the crowd shouted. "So what? Your wife cheated, but that doesn't mean you can stand by and watch her die! It doesn't mean you can demand her parents' property!""Right!" someone else agreed. "Cheating is cheating, but you went too far too!"I smiled coldly."You're right. One affair alone wouldn't justify this."But what if I said

I went there at once. When I pushed the door open, I froze. The cafe was already packed with reporters from every major media outlet.Hannah sat in a wheelchair in the center, with Adrian pushing her.Richard and Marjorie sat on chairs beside them, their faces full of tears. When Hannah saw me come in, her eyes reddened. She had Adrian push her toward me, then took my hand."Jason, you're here!"Don't misunderstand. I didn't call all these reporters here to do anything to you."She faced the cameras with deep affection on her face."I only want everyone to witness my love for you."She took the divorce agreement from her pocket and held it up to the cameras."This is the divorce agreement my husband gave me. It says he wants everything the Hayes family owns."I'd like everyone here to witness that I'm willing to give it to him."She looked at me as tears slid down her cheeks."I'm willing to give him everything I have, because I've always loved him. "Thank you, Evelyn." I bowed to her. "I haven't rested in more than twenty years. I want to rest for a while too."With that, I left and returned to my mother's place. The next day, I went to the hospital to see Hannah. When she saw me, she grabbed the cup by the bed and hurled it at me."Jason!"I dodged sideways. The cup smashed against the wall with a bang and shattered all over the floor."You still dare to come here!"She struggled to sit up."You made sure I can never have children again! You bastard! I'm going to kill you!"You're useless. You wouldn't save me, and you couldn't even protect the IVF sample! Go die! Go die!"I didn't speak.I just stood there quietly and watched her vent and curse.Only when she had exhausted herself and could no longer speak did I point leisurely at the curtain."Come out, Adrian. Stop hiding."The space behind the curtain went quiet for three seconds. Then came a light laugh. The man who had paid her medical fees walked out.He

When I woke up, a young nurse pushed the door open and walked in.She said, "The sample didn't make it. It shattered completely. IVF won't be possible anymore.""What about Hannah? How is she?"The nurse looked at me, her eyes full of sympathy."Her uterus was removed. She won't be able to have children in the future."I froze for three seconds. Then I burst out laughing.I laughed until tears poured out, until my wounds tore open, until I looked like a madman from a psychiatric ward. After laughing, I got out of bed and dragged my weak body step by step out of the hospital. As soon as I reached the hospital entrance, I was surrounded by cameras and microphones.Microphones were shoved into my face."Jason Cole! Why did you refuse to save her?""Your wife treated you so well. How could you be so cruel?""Did you want her dead all along?"Suddenly, Marjorie rushed out of the crowd with her hair disheveled and tears all over her face. She pounced on me and clawed at my clot
