Chapter 2

Author: Lucky Baby
Selena's POV

By the time I got back with the cookies, Ben had already fallen asleep.

Mom told me Aunt Ashlyn's family would be staying in my room for the night.

"Where am I supposed to sleep, then?" I asked.

"Just make do on the couch for one night. After all, when you were little—"

"Fine," I agreed, then turned to look her straight in the eye. "Mom, you have to promise me something too. Stop shoving other people's unwanted junk into my room."

Mom pursed her lips. "How can you call it junk?"

"It is junk."

"How can you say that?"

Her eyes began to redden. "It's the thought that counts. We all passed down things from older kids to younger kids when we were growing up."

I clenched my fists, but before I could say a word, the bedroom door opened.

Ben had woken up and was crying to go home. He said there was a strange smell in my room.

Aunt Ashlyn looked uncomfortable, knowing full well it was the musty odor from the clothes she had brought over.

"Lola, I think we should go home."

"I'm so sorry, Ashlyn. Selena just hasn't cleaned up properly."

As Mom said that, she stuffed all the cookies I had bought straight into Aunt Ashlyn's hands.

"Keep them, Lola. We don't need them," Aunt Ashlyn said.

"How could I? You brought so many gifts over, and we didn't even get to host you properly."

Smiling, Aunt Ashlyn reminded, "No need for hosting. But Ben's homework…"

"Leave it to Selena."

"Mom!" I called out.

Mom glared at me.

Fearing I might refuse, Aunt Ashlyn and Ben practically bolted out the door.

They took off with my brand-new coat, leaving behind a backpack full of homework and a wardrobe stuffed with damp, musty hand-me-downs.

Mom shoved the assignment checklist into my hands.

Looking down, I saw ten poster projects and two craft assignments.

"Do a good job," she instructed. "Ben needs to win an award with these."

On the third day of Thanksgiving break, I set the completed assignments on the table and told Mom to have Aunt Ashlyn come pick them up herself.

"Why bother other people like that? I'll just drop them off."

Smiling brightly, she grabbed the papers, hopped on her electric scooter, and rode over to deliver them.

When she came back, she handed me a bag. "Aunt Ashlyn bought this for you. It's brand-new."

I took it without opening it.

I suddenly remembered how Aunt Ashlyn had taken me out for burgers once when I was a child.

Maybe our relatives really did mean well when they gave us their old clothes and shoes. Perhaps they pitied Mom for raising me alone after her divorce.

Before the warmth in my chest could fully settle, I heard Mom speak up. "Your Aunt Ashlyn is so good to you. Why don't you help design her new house as a little favor?"

I looked up and stared at Mom in disbelief. "A little favor? Besides, Mom, I didn't study interior design."

"It's all the same thing."

Mom patted my shoulder. "You're the first college graduate in our family. Even if you don't know how, you can pick it up fast."

"Why doesn't she hire a professional?" I asked.

"If someone in the family can do it, why hire an outsider? Isn't that just a waste of money?"

"So you expect me to do her design work for free?"

My head pounded, and my ears started ringing loudly. "Mom, have you ever considered that I have a job? I'm busy."

"Then do it after work."

"I work overtime until midnight every day!"

"Selena Dodson!" Mom snapped.

"We really raised you for nothing! When you were in school, Ashlyn even lent us money for one of your tuition payments. How can you be so ungrateful? Either way, I've already promised her. Ashlyn said she'll send you the floor plans in a bit."

As I looked at the zip file that popped up on my phone, a cold chill ran through my entire body.

Selena's POVMom wired me 15 thousand dollars.I wanted to send it back. But then, my phone rang with a call from Mom."Selena…" Her voice sounded completely different. "I went to Ashlyn and demanded the money back.""So the five thousand dollars from before was out of your own pocket?" I asked."Yes.""I don't need it. Take it back.""Aren't you looking at apartments? You definitely need the money," Mom said."How did you know?""You haven't come home for so long, so I went to ask your boss," Mom replied. "She told me you're planning to settle down up north."My heart sank. I braced myself, fully expecting her to scream at me.Instead, she said softly, "You're really incredible, Selena. You're a manager now.""Yeah," I replied."How's house-hunting going?""Pretty good. I found a place that's about 970 square feet, with three bedrooms. One for sleeping, one for a study, and one for a walk-in closet."Two minutes passed before Mom spoke again. "If you need any more money

Selena wouldn't want it," Lola replied."Huh?" Jarrett looked genuinely surprised. "She used to take everything. Why doesn't she want it now?""Before, I was the one who wanted it, thinking I could save a few bucks. I never considered whether Selena actually needed any of it or not."With no other choice, Jarrett had to take his stuff back. That night, Lola sat at the desk with the broken leg, trying her best to design the wedding invitation. It took her two full days to complete it before sending it over to Jarrett. But all she got in return was his utter disdain. "What on earth is this? If you don't know how to do it, why didn't you just let Selena handle it?"Lola didn't admit that Selena had blocked her. She could only say, "Selena is way too busy with her work out of town.""It's just a little favor! It wouldn'

Third-Person POVThe next day, Sofia asked Lola how the design work was coming along.Lola could only reply, "Selena is too busy. You'd better find someone else."Sofia complained, "I already gave you everything! How can you agree to something and then go back on your word?""Well, I did agree…" Lola muttered, her gaze drifting down to the box of secondhand toys.A sudden thought flashed through her mind. "Wait a minute. Selena's in her 20s. She doesn't even play with toys anymore. Why on earth did you send these over?"Without a word, Sofia hung up the phone. It was as if a lightbulb had suddenly gone off in Lola's head. She walked over to the box of toys, staring for a long time at the toy car missing a wheel and the airplane missing a wing. She packed the toys back into the box and mailed them straight back. Then, she walked into Selena's bedroom. The room was crammed full of clutter, with barely enough space to set a foot down.Once she hauled all those pieces of second

"What am I supposed to do now? I already promised them.""What's going on?" Sarah asked politely."Well…"Lola pulled out her phone and shoved a set of blueprints in front of Sarah. "Oh right, your company does design work, doesn't it? Can you guys handle this?""This is interior design. It's not really what we do," Sarah replied."It's all the same thing. Selena could do it, so you guys definitely can too. It's just a little favor."Lola genuinely believed the task was simple. Anyone who knew how to use a computer could do it in no time.Sarah looked at h

Selena's POVI was reassigned to an office over two thousand miles away from home. The company gave me a pay raise and a bonus. I used the money to buy myself a brand-new wool coat. This time, I didn't wait for a huge discount coupon, nor did I wait for my birthday. The moment the coat arrived, I put it right on. It was gorgeous and warm.I unlinked my credit card from Mom's account. When she reached out to ask what was going on, I told her to consider the money my way of supporting her. If she could get it back, fine. If not, it was still hers to do with as she pleased. With that, I blocked her on WhatsApp.She started calling me using a neighbor's phone. "Selena, you've gone far enough. Are you really going to hide out there and never come home? Consider that 12 thousand—no, the 15 thousand dollars—money I owe you, okay?"She wrote up an IOU, took a photo of it, and sent it to me.I told her I didn't want it anymore."Mom, you've always wept and complained about how hard i

  • Buried under Junk and Family Obligations   Chapter 5

Selena's POVBy the time I walked all the way back to the office, the group chat had already blown up.Aunt Ashlyn said that my standards had gotten too high now and that I looked down on these things.Mom immediately sided with Aunt Ashlyn, accusing me of being ungrateful and failing to appreciate Aunt Ashlyn's kind intentions."Mom, if you think those things are so great, then why haven't you ever worn a single secondhand item sent over by our relatives? When I was little, the clothes were too big, so you tailored them down for me."When I grew up and the clothes were a little tight, you told me to lose weight. These clothes obviously fit you much better. Why didn't you ever wear them? I wore secondhand clothes for 18 years. I didn't have a single new thing."After I sent that, the group chat fell into total silence.Only Mom sent a voice note, weeping hysterically. "You ungrateful brat! You think you're too good for your mother now? Do you have any idea how hard it was to rai
