Chapter Two

Jordan’s cold, evil stare rested on me as my mom applied makeup on my face. “She doesn’t need all that makeup. She is pretty as she is,” Dad said, trying to cheer me up, since it was evident to everyone in the room I was not happy about being forced into a wedding with Jordan.

“All set,” my mom said, dropping the cosmetics she was holding and helping me out of the room to the passage where the pack dancers had mobilized for this sort of event. They were waiting for me.

Our pack’s wedding activities were always simple. The bride and the groom, accompanied by their family members, went to the pack’s witch, who would have them say their vows, and that was it. But for the alpha’s wedding, extra steps were added.

Everyone in the pack was assembled and entertained. Then the bride appeared, accompanied by the dancers who danced around the arena before she appeared. Once the bride appeared, she went directly to the podium area where the pack’s witch was already waiting, accompanied by the alpha. They would say their vows, kiss, and leave. Then the whole pack was fed and entertained with dances, games, and all sorts of activities until midnight.

The dancers entered the arena dancing wildly. I stared at them, knowing that in a few minutes my life would become miserable and I would be forced into a bondage. Tears streamed down my eyes without me noticing as my mind wandered far away. I was instantly drawn back by Jordan’s voice.

“You had better clean those stupid tears off. I am the one being forced into a marriage,” he said, walking into the arena, and I followed him, not wanting to upset my parents.

When we got to the podium, the pack’s witch, who had her face covered with a hood, placed our hands together and chanted some series of incantations, which I guess were in another language because I never heard anyone speak it. I didn’t understand one word coming from her mouth.

When she was done, her assistant, a young woman who was tipped to be her replacement when she retired, said, “It’s time to say your vows.”

The marriage vows were meant to be muttered by the groom to the bride so that no one else heard the groom say it. So Jordan brought his face closer to mine with a demonic smirk on his face.

“Remember what I told you. I am going to squeeze the living hell out of you until there is nothing left of you. Then we will both be free, with you dead,” he said, a smile slowly curving upon his face as he drew away. I smiled as if nothing was wrong, but beneath my face, my heart beat like crazy and fear made my stomach sink.

“You can now kiss the bride,” the assistant said again.

Jordan’s demonic smirk appeared again as he held my face roughly and forced me into a hard kiss, biting my lips hard with his teeth till I could feel blood on my tongue. Then he pulled away and gripped my hand, leading me out of the arena.

As soon as we were away from the pack’s eyes, he released my hand and pushed me roughly against the wall. “Your parents should have let my rejection stand,” he said, frowning.

That night after my wedding, I sat on the fountain in the pack house, thinking of how to escape my fate. It was obvious to me that no matter what happened or what I did, Jordan was going to kill me, and if not, I would never know peace.

I thought about escaping our island into the mainland, far away from surrounding land packs, but that was a long shot since I would probably be caught by another alpha and be killed or turned into a servant.

A crash inside the house drew me out of my thoughts, but I ignored it. It was probably Jordan destroying things inside the house in his craze.

I could not understand why my parents forced me into a marriage with a creature like Jordan, who listened to no one other than his parents. What would fate do when his parents died and there would be no one to stop him?

I was still thinking when I heard a louder crash followed by a moan. I was immediately on my feet. Was he hurting someone? I thought, rushing to the pack house. As I was about to enter the house, I heard the startled breathing, then the loud clashing of bodies and the moaning of a girl.

I stepped into the room and found Jordan on top of a girl as the girl moaned loudly like an animal in heat. I stepped back in shock and my ankle mistakenly hit the light bulb stand. As the light came on, the passionate moans grew louder.

“Don’t stop… don’t stop…” she sobbed, then ended as they both sprang up in shock.

I stared at Jordan, who started smiling, realizing it was only me. I looked at the naked girl and my legs dropped. It was Mira—my sister.

“Mira, how could you do this to me?” I asked, tears instantly flowing from my eyes, the weight of this betrayal becoming heavy on me. If there was anybody I trusted, I could count on in my current condition, it was Mira, and here she was, sleeping with the enemy who was my husband.

“Shocking, isn’t it?” she said, putting on her clothes. “You were always self-absorbed, thinking you were the best out of everyone. I guess your beauty got into your head and you refused to see that everything was not about you. I did not give a damn about all your flaws, but you had to get yourself mated to the love of my life. You should have stood up to our parents, but I guess you secretly wanted to marry the alpha so you could lord it over us.”

I stared at her, horror-stricken. Now I understood why she advised me to tell our parents I would not marry Jordan.

“I have my sister mated to him? I did not ask for any of this!” I said as the tears refused to stop.

“I know, but you will get it because you are better than everyone else, isn’t that it?” Jordan asked, his claws springing out.

“This is the part I kill her, right?” Jordan asked.

“Yes, but not like that. People would know that we killed her. But a fire could seem accidental. Let’s burn her,” Mira said.

My mouth was opened in shock, and I turned to run, but Jordan saw through me immediately. He grabbed me and pinned me to the ground, and Mira got a robe and tied me. They immediately started raining fuel on the house and struck one match.

The house immediately caught fire. I saw them running toward the gate and locking it before they left to ensure nobody came to my rescue. The fire spread quickly, coming into the living room where I was tied, and soon enough, I could feel the heat on my skin.

It was all over. I guess my story ends here.

  • CAUGHT BETWEEN WOLVES    chapter 11

Chelsea’s POVThe next day, Erin unexpectedly announced that I was going to the Lyre, a cave at one part of the pack with a rocky entrance, and inside it was Era’s almighty Merisa— which she could not be more mesmerized by. I myself was also extremely curious to see what would happen and how it would feel, since it would be my first encounter with magic aside from fairytale stories back at Jordan’s pack. Thank God I was free from that beast now.I followed Erin and the entire group of healers through a rocky path surrounded by bushes that led to the Lyre. Gregory had wanted to come, but only the healers and Alpha were allowed to enter unless you were the one being treated, like me. All through the walk, I’d feel Lyra through the corners of my eyes, staring daggers at me. I wondered why she hates me.When we arrived at the cave, Erin led me inside while the rest waited outside. I found myself standing in a sitting-room-sized space inside the cave, with large gardens of herbs at eve

  • CAUGHT BETWEEN WOLVES    chapter ten

Chelsea’s POVAfter dinner, I followed Erin to take a walk outside in the garden, which was lush with planted roses.“You shouldn’t have let her beat you,” Erin suddenly said. “Everyone must think you’re weak now.”“Who are you talking about, Maya?” I asked, and she nodded in affirmation.“I didn’t let her beat me. She was simply stronger,” I said, sounding rather calm and sheepish.“But you didn’t partial shift, ’cause if you did, Gregory and the others would have felt your energy and your claws could have come out,” she said, then continued, “I get it. If you don’t want any problems. But a weak wolf getting a free pass into the warriors’ guild just makes people hate you all the more.”“I can’t shift or partial shift,” I reveal, half expecting her to scream or something.“How? You are a wolf. Every wolf can,” she replied.“I have only shifted once—the night the Alpha rescued me,” I explained.“So you don’t know how to shift?” Erin asked, nodding, hoping she could see my head moving i

I woke up to find myself back at Erin’s room, with her and her brother, Gregory, arguing.“Are you sure the potion you gave her was the right one?” Gregory asked in a worry-filled voice, still pacing the room.“Yes,” Erin said, running her fingers through her hair. They were both so worried that they didn’t notice my open eyes.“Perhaps the potion was not rightly mixed. Maybe you—”“I did not make a mistake. The potions were mixed right, and you had better stop questioning my efficiency,” Erin fired back.“Well, if your drugs were working, I would not be lying so—” Gregory replied hotly, and Erin was about to respond when I found my strength and tried to get up, making the bed creak and getting their attention.“You’re up?” Gregory asked, rushing to my side.“I am not dead,” I said jokingly.“We have not told you otherwise,” Erin said, smiling.“I’m really glad you survived it. I don’t know what would have happened if they kept letting you fight,” Gregory said.“I told you he hates me

  • CAUGHT BETWEEN WOLVES    chapter eight

The next day, I found myself walking alongside Gregory toward the Warriors’ Guild, my heart beating so hard I thought he could hear it.“So normally, before you are allowed to join us, you would have to go through trials—combat, mental readiness, and stuff like that. But since I’m bringing you in, you don’t have to deal with that,” Gregory said, and I instantly paused in my movements.“That sounds like favoritism,” I said. “I am already hated around here. The last thing I want is to give them more reason to hate me.”Gregory paused as well and looked into my eyes, his gaze burning deep into mine. “I don’t care what anyone thinks as long as you are happy. And I don’t care if you have become used to being treated less, like you said earlier, but I won’t allow anyone to bully you or make you feel bad. So don’t worry about what they are thinking about you,” he said, and his concern toward me left butterflies in my stomach. As we walked into the guild, the inside was more of what a gorilla

“That went better than I thought it would,” Erin said as we sat down in her room, but I wasn’t paying attention. My mind was on Gregory, who was probably asleep in the next room. After Turner had put me in his care, he had moved me out of the shabby room I’d been staying in and into their own home. “Don’t worry about me. I’ve been used to being researched all my life, so this is child’s play compared to what I’ve experienced,” I reassured her. “You still haven’t told me your story,” Erin said. “Nothing is interesting to tell,” I said. The events after the horrible ones that followed my forced marriage to Jordan came flooding back into my mind. “I think I should sleep. It’s been a long day,” I said, lying down on the bed. *** I found myself back in the bushes surrounding my house, and suddenly the goons appeared again. This time, the wolves were tall—the size of horses—and larger than hippopotamuses. Scared, I turned and ran, and they followed, surrounding me with every step th

  • CAUGHT BETWEEN WOLVES    chapter six

“Fifteen against fourteen. I guess you’re staying then,” Lady Victoria said, and a wide grin spread across my face. I turned to the Beta—the man whose vote had just saved me. He smiled at me, and his handsome features, which the tension-filled moment had stopped me from noticing, dawned on me. Before I could rush over to say thank you, he had already left. One of the elders who voted against my staying walked up to me. He was the same one who had come to inform me that the Alpha wanted to see me. “I hope my vote does not draw bad blood between both of us,” he said. “No, not at all,” I replied, lying through my teeth. If I could, at that moment, I would have spat on his face and then proceeded to tear him to pieces. “Good. You are a fortunate one. I don’t know if it is fate or if the Beta is drawn to you, but he never uses his vote in these meetings. He has only voted once—to save his sister from being removed as one of the healers. And for that, you should consider yourself incredi
