From afar, Adelaide seems like a little lamb walking toward sacrifice in Egil's eyes. He's aware of the beauty of her late mother, Mrs. Amaranta, whom he had seen a couple of times in his childhood. However, he never thought that the young woman would look like an exact copy of the woman who used to steal everyone's sighs in the past.
Her wavy, long, reddish hair shines under the sun's rays, and her skin appears extremely pale in that green dress, although the color doesn't suit her at all.
Adelaide is a beautiful young woman; he can see that from his position, but all of that is overshadowed by her repulsive origin.
Egil keeps his head high amid the murmurs around him and pretends not to be affected. This is exactly what he aimed for with this reception, to make her vulnerable in the eyes of everyone at the hacienda.
The young woman walks with her nanny down the walkway, where he awaits her at the end, without a hint of emotion on his face. His upright and disdainful demeanor is intimidating to anyone, and it's not lost on Adelaide either.
Adelaide manages to see him, but she doesn't fully appreciate his features. The sunlight directly on his face prevents her from seeing him clearly, but the play of light and shadow adds an even more imposing and solemn air to Egil. His light brown hair, neatly cut, his broad, sturdy torso, and his height, too tall.
Her brother Calixto is the first to arrive, followed by her and her servant, who greet Egil with a nod.
"Welcome to the Arrabal hacienda," Egil nods to Calixto, deliberately ignoring Adelaide's presence as he gestures for them to follow him inside the house.
"Gage, instruct the servants to escort the young lady to her room and attend to her needs," Egil orders as he strides down a long, tall hallway. Adelaide can only catch a glimpse of his broad back as he walks away.
The chief's right-hand man personally guides Adelaide, as instructed by his boss, and her servant to their designated area. Gage didn't find it too unusual that Egil had requested the room farthest from the entire hacienda and in the least illuminated wing, because it's clear that there's some hidden intention behind that arrangement.
He casts a sidelong glance at the young woman as they walk, and something inside him pities her. She's also a victim of all this mess caused by her sister Nadia.
Once they arrive at the room prepared for her, Adelaide feels content. Although she never had everything she needed at the Valencia mansion, her tastes are not very demanding, especially after the long journey she's just completed.
"If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask, miss," Gage nods before leaving, leaving her alone in that place.
Adelaide takes a turn around the room and likes what she sees. The walls are well-maintained and painted in a pale green shade, the bed linens match the curtains, and there's a balcony overlooking a small garden with colorful roses.
She leans on the railing and scrutinizes the horizon, which is completely unfamiliar to her. Everything here seems darker and more somber.
This is all too much for Adelaide. In less than two days, her life has taken a 180-degree turn. She's just hours away from marrying a man who until yesterday was her sister's fiancé of fifteen years. She may be many things, but she's not foolish; she knows that her future will not be good in the hands of this spurned man. No one in their right mind forgets such a grave offense, especially someone like Egil Arrabal, with a ruthless reputation that everyone talks about all the time.
She has never felt as alone as she does now, despite growing up rejected by her family. Today, there's something more going on in her head and heart, and she can't help but shed a few tears. She feels unprotected like never before, like a lamb offered for sacrifice.
After crying for several hours, Adelaide quickly dries her cheeks when she hears a knock on the door, and before she can consent to entry, an unfamiliar servant enters the room as if she owns it.
"It's time for your bath, miss," the older woman announces with genuine arrogance. Adelaide thought she heard a chuckle afterward, but since she's not sure, she prefers not to mention it.
"Mercedes, my servant, is responsible for preparing my bath," Adelaide replies. Her voice comes out weak and husky, probably due to the humidity she's clearly not accustomed to.
"I am your servant assigned by Mr. Egil," the woman says, placing a very eye-catching red dress on the bed. "Your servant is attending to something else for the boss. I need to get you ready in an hour."
"What am I getting ready for?" Adelaide wonders internally with deep fear, but the dress doesn't look like something for a formal event, or so she thinks given all the shine it has as an ornament.
She's about to ask about the reason when the door opens, and Mercedes enters, flustered. Immediately, Adelaide feels relieved, but as soon as she starts preparing the bath, she realizes that something is amiss.
"Mercedes, what's going on?" she innocently asks, but before the old woman can answer, the other servant approaches and guides her into the bathroom, where a large bathtub filled with warm, scented water awaits her.
Adelaide steps into the water, and the servant starts scrubbing her body vigorously. She wants to protest the stinging sensation on her skin, but the servant remains unfazed by her discomfort.
Once she's thoroughly clean, both servants help her dry off, apply fragrant ointments all over her skin, comb her hair, and dress her. Mercedes opens a chest of jewelry and places a very beautiful matching necklace, earrings, and rings around her neck.
"I'm going to put on some perfume before you leave, my dear," Mercedes says. Adelaide notices her strange behavior, so she asks again.
"Why are you getting me ready?" she inquires with so much intensity that the old woman can't help but answer.
"Mr. Egil requested your presence in his room tonight, my dear," Adelaide is left gaping, not fully grasping her words. It's not that she doesn't know what that means, but why did he order her to go to his room? The wedding hasn't even taken place yet.
Adelaide's body begins to tremble uncontrollably. She resists believing that this man wants to possess her body today, right after she's arrived from a long journey. They haven't even exchanged a word, and he already wants to claim her? This is inconceivable to her.
"It's time, Adelaide. We must go," Mercedes says, confronting Adelaide with harsh reality. She follows the servant down a long hallway, trying to mentally prepare herself for what awaits her. That man has her in his hands, and there's nothing that can be done to prevent him from doing whatever he pleases with her.
The closer they get to Egil's room, the more dizzy and nauseous Adelaide feels. Her stomach churns, and she can't find a way to calm herself."Stay calm, my child," the maid urges, as if that were possible for her. She can ask her for anything except calmness. That's impossible right now. "Remember everything I've taught you. If you resist, it could be worse. You need to get used to these orders. Mr. Egil will be your husband from tomorrow, and today you are legally his fiancée, so it's normal that he wants some time alone with you."For Adelaide, hearing those words from the only person who has understood and cared for her since birth is a clear sign that very difficult days await her on this hacienda.Adelaide doesn't feel prepared for this private encounter between them. In fact, she's terrified just imagining that this man could use her body as he pleases."We've arrived, my child," they stop in front of a double door guarded by two armed and stern-faced men. "You should knock twi
In the main room of the Arrabal estate, Egil adjusts his hard virility underneath his sweatpants and sighs. That young girl only left him craving for more and now he struggles to fall asleep because of it.He gets up and starts pacing around the room until he reaches the balcony. He tries to calm his body with the fresh air hitting his face, but the memory of Adelaide's body writhing under his hand is still vivid in his mind. He needs release or he will go mad."Gage!" he shouts, and the man quickly enters."Do you need anything, sir?" the man asks, looking around to make sure everything is in order."Bring Petra right away," Egil orders in a hoarse voice. Gage understands what it means and immediately goes towards the servants' quarters.Petra is one of his favorite lovers and everyone in the estate knows it, even Egil himself gives her too many privileges for her position, which makes the other women in the family feel annoyed and creates a tense atmosphere among them most of the ti
"It's time, miss," says one of the maids, entering Adelaide's room. The young girl nods with a heavy knot in her stomach. She is still in disbelief. The woman in the mirror seems like someone else, certainly not herself. She looks beautiful and radiant this morning.Mercedes opens the drawer and takes out a perfume bottle to apply to her neck and wrist. The fragrance was her late mother Amaranta's, and no one has a perfume with the same scent because it was custom-made by a native from their village just for her. Mercedes cherished the perfume bottles like treasure after her mother passed away and gave them to Adelaide when she turned fifteen. The young girl closes her eyes and inhales that scent that reminds her so much of her mother, whom she never knew because she died the day she was born. It's as if her mother is with her now, and that gives her the courage for what lies ahead. She looks at herself one last time in the mirror while turning around to admire her dress. It's so exqu
Adelaide spends the entire day in her room lamenting. Her eyes are so swollen that it's difficult for her to open them completely. Mercedes came many times to ask from the doorway if she needed anything, but she simply told her to leave her alone. She didn't eat or drink anything all day.She lazily gets up and looks around. The night has already fallen, and the cold draft coming in through her window sends shivers down her spine.Despite how tired she feels, she manages to get out of the pompous wedding dress that's starting to itch her. She goes straight to the bathroom to wash her face with cold water. In the mirror, she sees the enormous dark circles under her eyes, and her disheveled hairstyle. She sighs, feeling terrible. She takes a shower and searches for a change of clothes to be more comfortable. With a shawl over her shoulders, she goes out to the balcony to admire the nighttime landscape of the Arrabal estate.Tonight is clear, and many stars twinkle in the dark sky. What
The next morning, in the rose garden, Petra and other young women are talking and laughing among themselves, pointing towards Adelaide's room. In her calmness, she decides to ignore them, opens the book in her hands, and focuses on the romantic plot she's reading. Mercedes had taken care of her education diligently over the years, which is why she can read and write fluently and has knowledge in various areas. Her father, Bahram Valencia, had always been ruthless with his daughter, and Adelaide has no doubt that he hates her with all his might. Nevertheless, he ordered that she receive the education befitting a young woman of her age. If there's one thing Adelaide enjoys, it's studying, and she has always excelled in it. She reads, writes, and dedicates herself even more than her sister Nadia, as one of her teachers had once told her.The women in the garden eventually decide to leave. Petra, who had suggested they go there to bother Adelaide, is furious because she couldn't achieve h
Blood starts to stain the woman's clothes as some guards come to see what's happening. Adelaide feels dazed hearing the screams of the other young women; she doesn't understand what's going on or why Petra accused her when she didn't even see what had happened."She wanted to kill me because she hates me?" Petra's screams alert Lilith, who is supervising some servants' activities in the adjacent garden. Adelaide remains silent, bewildered, not knowing what to say.Egil's cousin quickly arrives to see what's happening. From the blood on Petra's dress, who is crying bitterly, and the screams of the others accusing Adelaide, she can deduce what has happened.Lilith approaches firmly, and suddenly deep silence fills the place. Adelaide shakes her head as her hope crumbles like a sandcastle when Petra says that she was the one who pushed her.Adelaide's face turns as she receives a slap from Lilith. Her skin bears the marks of the woman's fingers in a dark red tone instantly.Petra is abso
Egil is busy conducting inspections of the other estates. The news of an imminent strike by some peasants has occupied all his attention during this time. He ordered Gage to accompany him and left Vítor in charge of important matters at the house with explicit instructions to notify him if anything urgent requires his attention.Late at night, burdened with exhaustion, he heads to his room, takes off his coat, and removes the muddy boots from his feet after walking through the crops and checking production. He has been here for a whole week, and the cold is seeping into his bones in these lands as he tries to reason with his workers. It's proving more challenging than he had believed. He needs at least a month to sort everything out here before returning to the Arrabal hacienda. A workers' strike is the last thing he needs right now.His trip was kept completely secret; no one knew the day he left the hacienda to ensure his safety, which has been under threat for some time."Do you wa
Early in the morning, Mercedes again requests a meeting with Lilith, but the guards inform her that Lilith had to leave the estate to attend to some matters in the capital. After much contemplation and unable to bear the uncertainty, with some apples stuffed in her stockings, the nanny walks hastily through the corridors leading to the lower part of the house, where the cells are located. This house is very large, nothing compared to the Valencias', but thanks to some servants who gave her directions, she finally manages to reach the lowest part, the basement. The cold in this area is uncomfortable, and the smell of the walls is atrocious. Mercedes can't fathom why they brought Adelaide to this place. If her husband weren't away on a trip, this wouldn't have happened, she's sure of it. He wouldn't be so cruel to her over something so insignificant. When she reaches the entrance, she encounters four armed men guarding the place, with six more patrolling the area.According to the serva
