LOGINChapter 3: A Friend
Elena’s POV The house was quiet when I returned home after dropping Lily off at school, I'd re-enrolled her in a new school after the wedding. The Kingston estate was at the other end of the city and Lily’s former school was just close by, Damien had barely answered me when I informed him of the change. Like all other things related to me, he just didn't care. I sighed as I walked into the house, my mind was blank on what to do next. I had nothing to do. ‘Who knew a day would come when I'd be looking for something to do?’ I couldn’t even muster a smile. I'd gotten a Master's degree in Business Management, thinking when I came back home Father would look past the fact I'd gotten pregnant with Lily. Only, he hadn't. I shook my head as I walked up the stairs, I'd been so naive to think that. After I got pregnant with Lily father sent me abroad to study. I didn’t need anyone to tell me that he did that to hide me and the pregnancy away. The daughter of a business tycoon, pregnant? That would've been quite the headline. Father had never failed to remind me on multiple occasions what a disappointment and disgrace I was. So instead of the welcome I thought I'd get, a job at the company, and a chance of redemption, Father had married me off to the first person who'd come calling. Beep! Beep! My cell phone rang suddenly, snapping me out of my thoughts. My mood lightened when I saw the name on the screen; Jacinta. Jacinta was my best friend, she'd helped me when I'd traveled abroad pregnant with Lily. She'd been the only one who'd stayed with me through the delivery. “Hello?” A rare smile touched my face. “Elena,” a small coy voice called over the line. “I'm pissed with you, you know that?” Jacinta’s voice was deadbeat as she spoke. “Me?” my eyes narrowed, what was she talking about? “What did—” “You get married and you decide not to tell me?” Jacinta interrupted, her words made my heart skip a beat. “I—” I trailed off, not quite sure what to say. But my mind filled with thoughts, how did she know? The ceremony had been a small and quiet one and I hadn’t… “Yes,” Jacinta prompted again, cutting off my thoughts. “Why didn't you tell me?” she sighed. “Gosh Elena, I'd been looking forward to your wedding.” “I know,” I whispered, “I'm sorry, okay? I can explain—” I wanted to continue but she cut me off. “You'll explain in person Elena,” Jacinta chuckled slightly. “GUESS WHO'S BACK?” “What–” a smile spread over my lips suddenly. “You're back?” “Yes,” Jacinta replied, a smile in her tone. “Where can we meet? I have the weekend off before I start working,” her words sent a pang of jealousy through me. “Later,” I glanced at the clock, silently calculating when Lily would be back from school. I didn’t want to leave her to the maids so I'd put her to bed first before leaving the house. “I know this great place, their wine is really good.” I chuckled, trying to sound upbeat. “It's a deal,” Jacinta agreed immediately. I quickly told her the location and time before she ended the call. For a moment I stood there lost in thought, Jacinta had gotten a job and what was I doing? My mood soured as I glanced around at the cold silent house. “You're being a mother for Lily,” I whispered to myself. That was far more than my mother had ever been I thought. The rest of the day passed in a blur and soon it was time. I was in the kitchen when I heard Lily’s shrill voice piercing the air. “Mom, I'm back,” her voice echoed, breaking the silence. “I'm over here sweetie,” I called out, my hands already moving to unpack her lunch. I'd just poured her juice into her cup when Lily walked in, her quiet expression made me freeze. “What's the matter?” I asked, walking up to her. I squatted, meeting her eye level. “It's…” Lily’s lips quivered and she turned to stare behind her. My eyes followed her gaze and my breath caught in my throat. Damien. “I picked her up myself, the driver called in sick,” his eyes that observed me were unreadable. Lily’s bag and lunch box were in his hands, they looked out of place with his impeccable suit. “Thank you,” I forced a smile, moving to take the bag and lunch box from his hands. “I hope she didn't bother you,” I dropped the bags on the kitchen counter. “No,” Damien spoke curtly, not moving from the doorway. My heart thudded as I felt his hooded eyes sweep over me and memories of last night came flooding in, I flushed avoiding his gaze. “Lily,” I looked down at her. “Go up to your room and remove your clothes, I'll be right behind you,” I leaned down to give her a peck on the cheek. “But mom—” Lily wanted to protest but I shook my head. “Off you go now,” I pulled out a piece of candy and gave her, only then did she leave, satisfied. Damien watched the exchange quietly, not saying a word. “So…” I looked up, picking my words carefully. “I'm planning to go out to see a friend,” I watched his eyes flick to me as I spoke. “A female friend,” I added, exhaling slowly. “And so?” Damien’s eyes didn't leave me. “I was just—” My mind blanked and I trailed off. I was just trying to ask for permission. Damn it! “You can do whatever you want to do,” Damien shrugged, his hands slipping back into his pockets. “Just—” I wanted to complete my statement but his words caught me by surprise. “You're okay with that…” my eyes widened slightly. I'd been expecting a cold reply. “I'll have the driver take you,” Damien didn't mind my surprise, his eyes scrutinized me carefully. “And when you come back,” he paused before he spoke almost deliberately. “I'll have a word with you.” Me? My heart skipped a beat and my pulse quickened, Damien’s eyes stared at me with a hidden emotion I couldn’t place. He didn’t wait for me to speak before he turned on his heel and left, leaving me frozen still. What would Damien want to talk to me about? I wondered, a knot tightening in my belly. I vaguely felt something was amiss but I couldn’t quite place my finger on it. Was I in trouble?CHAPTER 115Actions Breed Consequences…Elena“Are you okay?” Damien asked as we got out of the car and I moved to the side to stretch my legs.“Oh, yeah, I'm good. Just tired from being cooped in a tiny, little car for hours.” I tell him, rolling my shoulders. Two more cars rolled up ahead and the first person who dropped from the car shocked me as Cornell smiled, stretching a hand towards the car and Victoria came out next.My brows climbed up to my forehead as this was the first time I had seen him since his wedding. We didn't speak much after our argument and since things have been strained between us, I didn't see much of him.“Thank you, darling!” Victoria giggled, clinging tightly to his arm as she stepped up on tiptoes to kiss his cheek, but it only served to make Cornell look uncomfortable. “Ha! We're finally here! Hey, bro!” The latter part of her sentence was directed towards Damien, dragging Cornell's attention to us.I faked a small smile, pretending t
CHAPTER 114Move-in DayElena “I think this spot is better for the chairs!” I called out to the guys trudging through the house, carrying boxes.Someone grunted in response and gave a sign that they would double back, so I took several steps back and took a sweeping glance of the room. It's almost surreal to think that I would be living here instead of my former apartment but this move was the better option than staying next to Cornell.Besides, this is another proof that a lot can change in one month.Ever since that dinner, things have progressed between us. The painting revealed a lot of history between Jane and me.It turns out the reason why Jane had my mother's picture is because she's my biological grandmother.Shocking, isn't it?I nearly collapsed from shock when I found out. It turns out that my mother eloped with my father, temporarily cutting ties with her family just so they could be together because Jane, at the time, didn't approve of the union.
CHAPTER 113The Portrait ElenaSeeing someone you thought you knew quite well in an unfamiliar setting could be quite…troubling.“Damien?” The word spilled out of my lips in shock as I stared at him, so many thoughts running through my head. What was he doing here? Why did Jane call him Lucas? How does she know him by that name? Was he really her godson?“Elena…” he breathed, looking surprised himself. “You're the one she told me about…” his eyes moved over to Jane like he was putting the pieces of the puzzle together, except I was clueless about what was going on.“Do you know each other?” Jane spoke up after a minute of stunned silence had passed, glancing at Damien and me.Or should I call him Lucas now?“We do.” Damien cleared his throat, tugging at the top of his shirt. “It's uh…complicated.”“Why don't you uncomplicate it for us?” I prompted, smiling sweetly.“Okay, first things first…” Jane murmured, crouching down to face Lily who was still hiding beh
CHAPTER 112The Meetup…Some weeks later…Elena I spent a few seconds staring at the mirror mounted above my dressing table while I played with the necklace resting between my cleavage, looking at my reflection. It's been a long few weeks if I'm being honest, with Lily's surgery and her recovery, spending so much time bouncing between the hospital and work so I could keep the clients satisfied and the company running smoothly. Then also dealing with the fear of losing your daughter and rekindling an emotional connection with Damien.Yeah, Damien…I never thought that would go the way it did but honestly, he's the best person to go through a crisis with. He's patient, calm, supportive, and loving in the right moments. He never let me feel like I was asking too much or needed too much attention in certain aspects, and just like that, my anger melted and what took its place was compassion and slowly, feelings of deeper affection.Which was why I was able to tell him
CHAPTER 111An Accident?! (2)ElenaAfter breaking down in front of my car, somehow I managed to pick myself up and drive down to the hospital, with Cornell trailing behind me.When I was struggling to deal with the news of Lily being in the hospital, he rushed over to me, trying to figure out what had happened and in a weak moment, I gave in and told him.He waited until I felt better and was about to drive out to tell me that he was tagging along.I vehemently refused but he simply jogged over to his own car and followed behind me.I wanted to argue even more but I just let it slide. Even now, I'm barely holding it together.I stopped in front of the receptionist desk to get information about my daughter and once I had it, I moved down the hallway, searching for her room.It turns out that she was on the second floor but just as I was about to step in, a nurse showed up to block my path. “I'm sorry, you can't go in there.” She politely informed me.“That's
CHAPTER 110An Accident?!Elena It was just supposed to be a quilt pop in, just for me to grab some office documents and step out but sadly, I ran into someone.“Elena!” Cornell's voice ran out from the opposite direction as soon as I stepped out of my car.My head whipped to the side, so many emotions running through me, the least of all surprise.Deep down, I knew I was bound to see or run into him sooner or later.I just wasn't prepared.Ever since I heard him and Sophie talking at that cafe, I've been avoiding him.He has sent me dozens of text messages, dropped notes at my office stating that he wants to see me but I usually have my assistant deflect him.Whenever he comes by the house, I simply pretend like there's no one home.Honestly, I wasn't ready to face him as I didn't know how to react or even look at him. It's funny how in just a moment, your entire perception of someone can change.“There you are.” He breathed, his eyes greedily roving over my
Chapter:84: The storeElenaBefore I could say a word, he bent slightly and swept me into his arms. I couldn’t protest.“Cornell!”“Your heels will sink into the mud,” he said, as if it were the most logical thing in the world. “I’m saving you from an untimely fall.”I wanted to argue. I should’ve
CHAPTER 85Surprise!Elena We walked in, our clothes damp from the rain.I looked around, noticing the hotel was in good shape. It wasn't as glamorous as a five-star hotel but it wasn't shabby either.I stepped back a bit so Cornell could take the lead, and once he did, he walk
Chapter 79: plan coming togetherThe building smelled of mildew and dust, its walls lined with cracked paint. Dim overhead lights flickered, giving the space an eerie, half-abandoned feel. It was the kind of place that one could step in and never return—or make deals they never wanted traced. Soph
Chapter:83: far away ElenaI stumbled back, nearly dropping my tablet.Cornell only smirked, a slow, deliberate curl of his lips that promised this was far from over.“Do my lips entice you that much,” he said with a satisfied expression on his face. But before I could say anything the elevator
