LOGINChapter 4: Embarrassing
Elena’s POV Lily was fast asleep by the time I donned my dress, a black satin gown that hugged my curves. I always felt sexy whenever I wore it. ‘I was gonna see Jacinta anyways’ I thought, adjusting the strap of the small handbag I intended to use. I might as well make a good impression. It wouldn't do to meet her looking like the poor invisible wife of Damien Landon. My eyes flashed as I silently remembered Damien’s words from earlier; ‘I'll have a word with you,’ he'd said. I couldn’t quite place it but I had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach when I thought about it. Damien had ignored me for months… bar that night, my cheeks flushed and I shook the thought away. If Damien was looking for me, I had little faith it'd be anything good. I checked on Lily before heading downstairs, the satin of my gown whispering against my skin. I could hear the faint humming of a car engine as I approached the door. But nothing could have prepared me for the sight outside. A sleek white car was parked out front, my breath caught as I stared at the car “I'm going out in that?” The thought sounded ridiculous to me. I'd been born into wealth but this car? It screamed extravagance. My lips curled as I imagined Jacinta’s reaction when she saw the ride. The insides were sleek and comfortable, and within half an hour I arrived at the place we'd arranged to meet; Cherries. It was a high-taste place that had the best wines. I inclined my head to the attendant at the door as I walked in. I spotted Jacinta quickly, her mess of blonde curls would stand out anywhere. “Jacinta,” I whispered, tapping her shoulder and I stopped beside her. “Long time no see,” I chuckled in delight. “Elena?” She lowered the dark shades she wore, her eyes behind the shades were bright. “My God, you look stunning,” Jacinta rose to her feet and drew me into her arms. Jacinta was practically glowing as we caught up, her eyes fixed on mine as we talked about everything. “So, about this job,” I smiled, slowly turning the glass of wine between my fingers. “I got the job!” Jacinta chuckled, her voice loud enough to turn heads. I flinched slightly, but she didn’t seem to notice—or care. “It's a big business firm, Elena! Can you believe it? The application didn't even take up to a week,” Jacinta leaned back in her seat, her manners relaxed. “That’s amazing,” I replied, smiling at her enthusiasm. “When do you start?” “Monday,” she said, clapping her hands together. “But I had to see you first. We needed this night, you know? To celebrate before I get buried in boring paperwork.” I chuckled softly. Jacinta always had a way of making things larger than life. “Celebrating doesn’t mean drawing the entire room’s attention, though,” I teased lightly, nodding towards the curious glances we were receiving. She waved me off. “Let them look! Tonight is all about me, baby!” Her voice rose again, and I could feel the eyes on us. Before I could suggest she tone it down, a waiter appeared at our table, smiling tightly. “Excuse me, ma’am,” he began, his tone polite but firm. “Could you lower your voice just a little? Some of our guests—” “Excuse me?” Jacinta’s head snapped toward him, her voice dripping with indignation. “Are you saying I’m too loud?” “Not at all, ma’am. It’s just—” “Oh, no, no, no,” she interrupted, waving her hand dismissively. “I’m celebrating. And if that’s a problem for your guests, maybe they should go somewhere else.” I winced, my cheeks burning as I noticed more people staring. “Jacinta,” I murmured, placing a hand on her arm. “Let’s not make this a big deal.” She huffed, crossing her arms but finally falling silent as the waiter gave me a grateful nod before retreating. The atmosphere at the table had turned awkward, and I quickly searched for a way to diffuse it. “How about we freshen up before we head out?” I suggested. “We can grab some air and maybe find somewhere quiet to talk.” Jacinta narrowed her eyes but shrugged. “Fine. Let’s go.” I forced a smile and got up, grabbing my bags and we made our way to the restroom. --- I insisted on handling the bill as we stepped out of the restroom. Jacinta didn’t argue, still sulking about the waiter’s comments. I approached the counter confidently and handed over my card. The waiter took the card and swiped it. He paused, a frown appearing on his face. My heart skipped a beat but before I could say anything he looked up at me. Ma'am,” he lowered his voice. “The card was declined.” “What?” My voice came out sharper than I intended. “That’s impossible. Try it again.” He nodded and walked away, leaving me standing there with my heart racing. Declined? My mind reeled. There had to be some mistake. The waiter returned moments later, his expression apologetic. “I tried multiple times, ma’am. The card appears to be empty.” My stomach dropped. “Empty?” I whispered. Jacinta, who had been standing behind me, leaned closer. “What’s going on?” “I don’t know,” I said, my voice shaky. “It doesn’t make sense.” But before I could explain further, the murmurs started. “That’s her,” someone whispered from a nearby table. “The wife of Damien Landon,” another voice chimed in. I froze, my breath catching in my throat as their stares seemed to bore into me. “She doesn’t have money to pay?” “How embarrassing.” A wave of humiliation crashed into me and I could feel the stares fix on me. It hadn't helped that Jacinta had been so loud earlier, now we were at the center of attention. “Elena,” Jacinta said, her voice low for the first time. “People are watching.” I couldn’t respond. I couldn’t move. The humiliation was paralyzing, and my mind raced with questions. How could this happen? Had Damien done this? Was this his way of punishing me? “Excuse me,” a voice said, breaking through my spiraling thoughts. I turned to see a man approaching—a face I vaguely recognized, one of Damien’s acquaintances. He'd been at the wedding, and the sight of him was even more humiliating. “Mrs. Landon,” he said smoothly, he stared at me in concern. “Is everything all right? It’s not every day we see someone of your… stature in a situation like this.” I swallowed hard, my throat tight. The whispers grew louder, the weight of their judgment suffocating me. I needed to get out of here, but I had no idea how.CHAPTER 120EPILOGUEThree years later…Elena“Lily, be careful with Noah!” I screamed, running out through the kitchen door to watch Lily and Noah play in the garden, placing a hand on my racing heart.I used to think that the most important thing anyone cared about was themselves but that perspective changed when I gave birth to these two beautiful kids.Three years ago, when the doctor informed me that I was pregnant, everything changed and 9 months later when I held Noah in my arms for the first time, I knew that my life was never going to be the same again.Noah grew up to be the spitting image of Damien, and unlike most boys his age, he's actually calm, reserved, and incredibly intelligent. I stood there with my arms across my chest, simply soaking up this moment. In as much as I was busy trying to be a wife, mother, and businesswoman, I also didn't want to miss out on my kids' formative years.Time goes by so fast and I didn't want to wake up one day and be
CHAPTER 119A Joyous Occasion…ElenaTo say I got wedding jitters would be putting things mildly.I am this close to a full-blown anxiety attack, and everything stems from the fact that I was about to get married to the most amazing man I had ever met.Damien said he wanted to get married to me as soon as possible but as much as I wanted that, I also wanted to have my dream wedding, and to achieve that took us a month.A hectic, annoying month but it's all worth it because I know that by the time I walk out there, everything that I had ever envisioned would be brought to life.It wasn't really a large wedding as I had already done that the first time since this was a celebration of our love, I wanted something more intimate, something more personal so I invited our relatives extending the list to only a couple of our close friends. There was a knock on the door and I turned around, brushing my hands down my dress suddenly feeling nervous. “Yeah?” I called out.“It
CHAPTER 118The Business Summit & New Beginnings…Elena“Hmm, this tastes refreshing! Can I have another please?” I said to the waiter with a wide smile, gently dropping the glass on his tray.He nods and turns to leave, disappearing into the sea of guests that surrounded us.We're at the business summit that Jane suggested we attend and the number of guests was quite staggering.Almost everyone in the business world was here and it's quite amazing that for a few hours, we get to share the same space with some of the most brilliant and talent business men and women.“Can I get your attention please?” My thoughts were directed towards the podium where Jane was standing, gently hitting her glass with the side of a fork, drawing everyone's attention to her and drowning the chatter.Oh, it's happening…“Tonight is such a lovely evening and I am pleased to be amongst such gorgeous yet brilliant businessmen and women…” she started to say but I lost the rest of her speec
CHAPTER 117A New Dispensation…Elena“Hey, Dad!” I smile warmly as I approached the hospital bed, leaning down to kiss his cheek and hug him. After a few seconds, I pulled back to get a good look at his face. “You look good today, how are you doing?”“Better now that I've seen you,” he said with a contented sigh. “How are things with you?”Before I could open my mouth to respond, Cassie walked in, banging the door against the wall as she strutted in with a cloud of perfume. “Daddy!!” She squealed, brushing past me so she could wrap her arms around him in a hug, only pulling back after a moment to scrutinize his face. “You look great! Did you get that face tube I sent to you?”“I did sweetheart and while I would love to do nothing more than catch up with you guys…” he held her hands as he tried to sit up, looking serious. “There's a reason I told you guys to come.”Cassie and I exchanged a glance as we were both surprised by his statement.“Are you okay Dad?” I to
CHAPTER 116A Breaking Point…Elena “Hey, I'll be right back!” I call out as I grabbed my shawl and wrapped it around my shoulders as I stepped out of the house, in desperate need of fresh air. It's been three days since Damien started gathering evidence, and the space in the house has grown a bit choked up.I needed to think and breathe in fresh air that wasn't polluted by thoughts of how to make sure the Grey Enterprise pays.So I went down by the lake. The lake was about thirty minutes away from the house and it was completely solitary… which was exactly what I wanted. There was a cute bench about three feet away from the mouth of the lake and most times, I just sit there to soak in the beauty of nature and listen to the water swishing about.Unfortunately, my moment of peace only lasted for ten minutes before a shadow was cast upon my face.“Hi!” A very familiar and cherry voice ran out. “Can I sit here?”I tilted my head back to look, seeing Victoria standin
CHAPTER 115Actions Breed Consequences…Elena“Are you okay?” Damien asked as we got out of the car and I moved to the side to stretch my legs.“Oh, yeah, I'm good. Just tired from being cooped in a tiny, little car for hours.” I tell him, rolling my shoulders. Two more cars rolled up ahead and the first person who dropped from the car shocked me as Cornell smiled, stretching a hand towards the car and Victoria came out next.My brows climbed up to my forehead as this was the first time I had seen him since his wedding. We didn't speak much after our argument and since things have been strained between us, I didn't see much of him.“Thank you, darling!” Victoria giggled, clinging tightly to his arm as she stepped up on tiptoes to kiss his cheek, but it only served to make Cornell look uncomfortable. “Ha! We're finally here! Hey, bro!” The latter part of her sentence was directed towards Damien, dragging Cornell's attention to us.I faked a small smile, pretending t
Chapter 30And She Didn't Know A ThingElena (Flashback_six months ago)My head pounded in rhythmic beats that throbbed my senses as I slowly came to. I blinked my eyes, trying to adjust my eyes to the light. Where was I? I looked up at the white ceiling, not moving. I couldn't even move if I w
Chapter 22 In confusion Elena I felt the walls closing in on me as I walked through the hallways, a few files in hand. I was so disconcerted I nearly tripped over my feet. Damien was the CEO? The revelation crashed into me like a novelty and I felt my mind bubbling as shock coursed through me.
Chapter 20Shocking EncounterElena The office was a bustle of movement with people moving back and forth and the odd person answering a ringing phone. My head was spinning as I stared at the computer screen, trying to make sense of the figures. It'd been a few weeks, and I'd been swimming in
Chapter 23Holding On To Her NerveElenaMy heart felt stuck in my chest as I looked up into Damien's cold eyes and my breath caught in my throat. It took all of my willpower not to stare at him with knowing eyes. Instead, I remained cold, staring at him with dark eyes and a neutral expression.
