Prologue.
Elena’s POV “Who's Elena Kingston?” The question hung in the air and my breath hitched. Why would the CEO's PA be looking for me? I wondered, getting quickly to my feet. “Me,” I raised my hand hurriedly, getting to my feet. I could feel my insides tangle into knots as everyone's eyes were on me. “You're needed in the CEO's office,” the PA, a slim haughty woman everyone called Clara said. “He's going to be taking over the ‘Houston Project,’ she revealed a piece of shocking news. “I…” the words lodged in my throat and for a moment all I could do was stare. I quickly caught myself, rushing to pack the files I'd worked on through the night before I rushed out of the office behind her. I clutched the project file tighter, and my fingers felt damp against the smooth leather as I followed the PA through a maze of glass walls and neutral décor. One month. That’s how long I’d been here—long enough to blend into the background, unnoticed, unbothered. Just the way I wanted it. “His office,” Clara said, stopping abruptly. “He’ll be overseeing the project with you. He's waiting for you,” she glanced at me. I nodded, my throat tightening. I hadn’t had reason to meet the CEO yet but whispers about his ruthlessness had reached every corner of the building. I rolled my eyes secretly. Perfect. Exactly what I needed—a demanding boss breathing down my neck. I pushed the door open. He was seated in his chair with his back facing me, his eyes fixed on the impressive skyline view. “Good afternoon, sir,” I said, trying to make my voice sound as professional as I could. Silence greeted me. Feeling awkward, I cleared my throat and stepped forward, placing the file on his desk. “This is the report on the—” “Quiet,” he snapped, cutting me off. I froze, my heart skipping a beat and I wondered if I'd done something wrong. I saw him raise his cell phone to his ear, he was on a call? I hesitated for a moment before I turned to leave, not wanting to listen in on his conversation. “Did I ask you to leave?” I paused, the familiar voice freezing me to the spot. My breath caught as I turned. The chair rotated on its wheel, revealing the face of the CEO. Him? The sight of him knocked the air out of my lungs and I could feel the blood drain from my face. How could it be him? I wondered, my gaze fixed on him. The man I’d sworn to forget. The man I once called my husband. What was he doing here? Last I remembered he was working at his father’s company. I quickly arranged my features to be cool and calm. I didn’t want the fear and shock that gripped me to sip through my expressions. I was no longer the woman he knew months ago. “Your PA asked me to present the project details to you,” I forced myself to meet his gaze squarely. “You…” his eyes widened with shock. “What games are you trying to play, Elena?” Before I could respond, he stood and rounded the desk, grabbing my wrist. “Sir, what are you—” “Do you have any idea how much trouble you caused me with your actions?” His voice was heavy with a bitterness I hadn’t expected. “I…” I hesitated for a split second contemplating what next to do before I yanked my hand back, my mask of calm slipping back into place. My thoughts were a mess and in a state of panic, the words, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. We’ve never met before today,” trailed off my lips instinctively as a means of self protection. I had started a lie I had to see through to the end. His lips twisted into a smirk, one that sent shivers down my spine. “Really?” Before I could react, his lips crashed onto mine. The kiss was searing, infuriatingly familiar, and I bit down hard. He pulled back, wincing, and the sound of my palm striking his face echoed through the room. “What are you doing?” I snapped, chest heaving. I was careful to keep my expression disgruntled but I secretly felt happy at the feeling of slapping him. He deserved it… And more. “What…” His expression faltered—confusion and disappointment flashing briefly before he masked it. “You really don’t know who I am?” “No,” I moved away from him, wiping my lips. “Why did you do that sir?” “You…” Damien shuddered, his expression changing. “You may leave,” he said finally, his tone hollow. “Yes,” I turned quickly, relief washing over me as my hand gripped the door handle. “Wait.” I froze, glancing back. His eyes were sharper now, calculating. “I want you in my office tomorrow morning with additional details on the project.” “Yes, sir.” I left without looking back, my mind a chaotic swirl of thoughts. My pulse was still racing when I reached my desk. But I'd made up my mind. If my leaving had shaken something in him, I wouldn’t let it affect me. He made his choice long ago, and I wasn’t about to fall for him again. I would keep up this act. I would act like I didn't know him. But the lingering burn of his kiss and the look in his eyes told me this was far from over.CHAPTER 115Actions Breed Consequences…Elena“Are you okay?” Damien asked as we got out of the car and I moved to the side to stretch my legs.“Oh, yeah, I'm good. Just tired from being cooped in a tiny, little car for hours.” I tell him, rolling my shoulders. Two more cars rolled up ahead and the first person who dropped from the car shocked me as Cornell smiled, stretching a hand towards the car and Victoria came out next.My brows climbed up to my forehead as this was the first time I had seen him since his wedding. We didn't speak much after our argument and since things have been strained between us, I didn't see much of him.“Thank you, darling!” Victoria giggled, clinging tightly to his arm as she stepped up on tiptoes to kiss his cheek, but it only served to make Cornell look uncomfortable. “Ha! We're finally here! Hey, bro!” The latter part of her sentence was directed towards Damien, dragging Cornell's attention to us.I faked a small smile, pretending t
CHAPTER 114Move-in DayElena “I think this spot is better for the chairs!” I called out to the guys trudging through the house, carrying boxes.Someone grunted in response and gave a sign that they would double back, so I took several steps back and took a sweeping glance of the room. It's almost surreal to think that I would be living here instead of my former apartment but this move was the better option than staying next to Cornell.Besides, this is another proof that a lot can change in one month.Ever since that dinner, things have progressed between us. The painting revealed a lot of history between Jane and me.It turns out the reason why Jane had my mother's picture is because she's my biological grandmother.Shocking, isn't it?I nearly collapsed from shock when I found out. It turns out that my mother eloped with my father, temporarily cutting ties with her family just so they could be together because Jane, at the time, didn't approve of the union.
CHAPTER 113The Portrait ElenaSeeing someone you thought you knew quite well in an unfamiliar setting could be quite…troubling.“Damien?” The word spilled out of my lips in shock as I stared at him, so many thoughts running through my head. What was he doing here? Why did Jane call him Lucas? How does she know him by that name? Was he really her godson?“Elena…” he breathed, looking surprised himself. “You're the one she told me about…” his eyes moved over to Jane like he was putting the pieces of the puzzle together, except I was clueless about what was going on.“Do you know each other?” Jane spoke up after a minute of stunned silence had passed, glancing at Damien and me.Or should I call him Lucas now?“We do.” Damien cleared his throat, tugging at the top of his shirt. “It's uh…complicated.”“Why don't you uncomplicate it for us?” I prompted, smiling sweetly.“Okay, first things first…” Jane murmured, crouching down to face Lily who was still hiding beh
CHAPTER 112The Meetup…Some weeks later…Elena I spent a few seconds staring at the mirror mounted above my dressing table while I played with the necklace resting between my cleavage, looking at my reflection. It's been a long few weeks if I'm being honest, with Lily's surgery and her recovery, spending so much time bouncing between the hospital and work so I could keep the clients satisfied and the company running smoothly. Then also dealing with the fear of losing your daughter and rekindling an emotional connection with Damien.Yeah, Damien…I never thought that would go the way it did but honestly, he's the best person to go through a crisis with. He's patient, calm, supportive, and loving in the right moments. He never let me feel like I was asking too much or needed too much attention in certain aspects, and just like that, my anger melted and what took its place was compassion and slowly, feelings of deeper affection.Which was why I was able to tell him
CHAPTER 111An Accident?! (2)ElenaAfter breaking down in front of my car, somehow I managed to pick myself up and drive down to the hospital, with Cornell trailing behind me.When I was struggling to deal with the news of Lily being in the hospital, he rushed over to me, trying to figure out what had happened and in a weak moment, I gave in and told him.He waited until I felt better and was about to drive out to tell me that he was tagging along.I vehemently refused but he simply jogged over to his own car and followed behind me.I wanted to argue even more but I just let it slide. Even now, I'm barely holding it together.I stopped in front of the receptionist desk to get information about my daughter and once I had it, I moved down the hallway, searching for her room.It turns out that she was on the second floor but just as I was about to step in, a nurse showed up to block my path. “I'm sorry, you can't go in there.” She politely informed me.“That's
CHAPTER 110An Accident?!Elena It was just supposed to be a quilt pop in, just for me to grab some office documents and step out but sadly, I ran into someone.“Elena!” Cornell's voice ran out from the opposite direction as soon as I stepped out of my car.My head whipped to the side, so many emotions running through me, the least of all surprise.Deep down, I knew I was bound to see or run into him sooner or later.I just wasn't prepared.Ever since I heard him and Sophie talking at that cafe, I've been avoiding him.He has sent me dozens of text messages, dropped notes at my office stating that he wants to see me but I usually have my assistant deflect him.Whenever he comes by the house, I simply pretend like there's no one home.Honestly, I wasn't ready to face him as I didn't know how to react or even look at him. It's funny how in just a moment, your entire perception of someone can change.“There you are.” He breathed, his eyes greedily roving over my
Chapter 48Take A LeapElena My heart was in my stomach as I drove to Lily's school. I was driving faster now, my stomach a tangle of nerves. Damien's text had completely unnerved me, I'd texted him the address of Lily's school instead of the house. It'd be safe there I silently assured myself,
Chapter 45Open ThreatsThe office was dead silent when Victoria walked in, the sound of her heels echoing in the room. She had a satisfied smirk on her face seeing the looks of utter shock on the faces of the directors. They had ample reason to be shocked. Victoria had connected her system to t
Chapter 43No Loose EndsThe office was quiet and peaceful, Victoria was at her desk as she went through company reports and documents. Managing the company wasn't an easy feat but she'd put in her utmost effort in it. Father wasn't inclined to patience, especially if he noted any mistakes. And
Chapter 47A Choice In The Midst Of DangerElenaThe house was quiet when I walked in and I finally heaved a sigh of relief, Lily had gone to school and finally I could have some peace. Too soon. The thought had barely registered in my mind when Jenna poked her head around the corner, her gaze s
