Zara’s POV

By the time I walked into the dining room, the table was already set. Crystal glasses. Fancy dinner candles flickering low enough to look intimate but high enough to expose every expression.

It felt less like dinner, more like court.

Theo Ferraro sat at the head of the table, relaxed as if he owned the air itself and Matteo sat to his right, posture straight, and his expression cold. He didn’t even look at me when I entered.

Of course he didn’t.

A servant pulled out a chair for me, directly across from Matteo. How convenient.

“Ah,” Theo Ferraro smiled warmly. “There she is.”

I forced a small nod. “Good evening.”

Matteo’s eyes lifted then, only for a second. But it was enough to assess me. Then he looked back down at his glass.

“Sit, sit,” Theo urged. I lowered myself into the chair and the silence that followed wasn’t just empty but thick.

Theo folded his hands together. “So,” he began casually, “how is university, Zara?”

“It’s fine.”

“Fine?” He tilted his head. “That sounds underwhelming.”

“It’s… busy.”

Matteo’s jaw twitched faintly and Theo noticed.

“I heard there was some excitement recently,” Theo Ferraro added lightly. “Something about a video?”

My fork paused midair and Matteo on his end didn’t move.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said evenly.

Theo chuckled softly. “Come now. News travels.”

“I handled it,” Matteo said flatly finally breaking his silence.

Theo’s eyes slid to his son. “Handled?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Matteo’s gaze didn’t shift still. “It’s done.”

He stared at him for a long moment, and then smiled faintly. “Good.”

I swallowed knowing that they knew. Of course they knew. Nothing in this family stayed private.

Dinner was served in seconds. Plates placed carefully in front of us and the clink of silverware sounded too loud.

Theo leaned back slightly staring at me. “Zara, tell me. Are you enjoying Italy?”

“It’s different,” I replied.

“Different good or different disappointing?”

I hesitated. “I’m adjusting.”

Matteo finally looked at me again and then he looked away.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to study here,” I added politely.

Theo smiled approvingly. “Gratitude is a beautiful trait.”

Matteo’s fork scraped against his plate as if trying to pretend we weren't at the table.

“Is she adjusting well?” Theo asked him and Matteo took a slow sip of water before answering.

“Like she said.Yes.”

That stung more than it should have. ‘Like I said?’

Theo’s gaze flickered between us.

“You two seem… distant.”

The minute he said that, my shoulders stiffened.

“We’re fine,” I said quickly but Matteo didn’t confirm it or even deny it. He simply continued eating.

Theo leaned forward slightly. “Living under the same roof requires harmony.”

“We have harmony,” Matteo said calmly cutting him off and that lie sat heavy in the air.

Theo smiled faintly. “Do you?”

And silence followed again that It felt like I was being dissected.

Theo turned back to me. “Has Matteo been a good guardian?” Those words made my jaw tighten.

“Yes.”

Matteo’s eyes flicked to mine sharply at that.

“Guardian,” Theo repeated thoughtfully. “Interesting choice of word.”

“What else would he be?” I asked carefully and Theo’s smile deepened.

“Family.”

That word felt loaded for some reason. Matteo’s voice cut in, almost too quickly. “We’re not children, Father.”

“No,” Vittorio agreed softly. “You’re not.”

His gaze lingered on Matteo longer than necessary and a silent exchange passed between them.

I cleared my throat. “I have classes tomorrow. I shouldn’t stay up too late.”

Which was a cowardly excuse but I needed air but Theo waved dismissively. “One more course.”

And immediately dessert was placed in front of us. I barely even tasted it. The tension between Matteo and I was static now.

Every time our eyes accidentally met, it felt like a challenge. Like we were daring the other to say something. Anything.

Finally, Theo set his fork down.

“I expect unity in this house,” he said calmly.

“Understood?” he asked Matteo.

“Yes.”

“And you, Zara?”

I forced myself to meet his eyes. “Understood.”

“Good.”

And then he stood as the room seemed to breathe again.

“I have a call to make,” he said. “You two should talk.”

My heart skipped as Matteo’s expression darkened slightly watching his father walk away.

“We have nothing to discuss,” he said evenly but Theo paused at the doorway.

“Don’t make me repeat myself.”

Then he left and then the door closed softly behind him as silence filled the air. I pushed my chair back first.

“I’m going upstairs.”

“Sit,” Matteo protested. A command so quiet yet firm.

And I froze. Slowly, I turned to face him.

“I’m not one of your men,” I said coolly.

“I'm only still seated here because of him” he said evenly still staring into his plate.

Anger flared. “Excuse me?”

“So what now, are you blaming me?”

“I’m stating facts.”

I laughed bitterly. “And that gives you the right to make me stay back here?”

“Yes.”

The bluntness stunned me.

I stood fully now. “I didn’t ask you to pretend.”

“You don’t have to.”

“That’s not your decision.”

He rose slowly from his chair as the air shifted instantly. He was taller up close. Imposing.

“It is when you live under my roof,” he said.

I stepped closer despite myself. “I am not your responsibility Matteo.”

His jaw tightened. “You are here because of my father’s decision.”

“And that makes you my owner?”

His eyes darkened.

“Careful,” he warned softly.

“Why do you care so much?” I demanded.

He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped closer. Close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off him.

“You mistake control for care,” he said quietly.

“Then what is it?” I whispered. His gaze dropped briefly to my lips. Then back to my eyes.

“Discipline.”

The word hit like ice water as anger surged through me.

“You’re unbelievable.”

“And you’re reckless.”

“At least I’m honest.”

His expression hardened.

“Honesty would require you admitting you knew exactly what you are doing.”

I blinked. “What?”

“You want attention.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“You want to provoke me.”

My breath caught. Because maybe—

“No,” I said firmly. “I don’t think about you that much to want to get your attention.”

“Good,” he replied coldly as the distance returned instantly.

Walls slamming back into place.

“I’m done with this conversation,” I said, stepping back.

“Good,” he echoed.

For a moment we just stood there, two people pretending indifference. Two liars.

Without a word, I turned and walked toward the door.

“Zara,” he called out again. But I didn’t stop.

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 40

Matteo’s POVBy the time I stepped into the office, I was already irritated, not even because of the board or the Angelos. Not even because of Giovanni Russo’s audacity. But because of her. The way she walked past me this morning without looking at me. Like I was a mistake she didn’t want to even remember.I pushed the thought aside as the elevator doors opened and then the entire executive floor went silent the second I stepped out.“You’re early,” Luca called out from behind me.“I didn’t sleep,” I replied flatly and he didn’t comment on that either. We entered the main conference room where three department heads were already waiting.Financial projections lit up the screen in an instant. Red numbers. Declining margins, shipment delays. Insurance spikes. On entry I didn’t sit.“Explain what you mean,” I said as Marco cleared his throat.“The Naples route interruption has created a backlog. Three clients have requested renegotiation.”“Denied,” I said immediately.“They’re threateni

Matteo’s POVMy fingers still smelled like her. Sweet and dangerous but I walked out first.Because if I stayed another second, I would have forgotten every rule I’ve lived by.The hallway felt colder than it should have, too quiet for what had just happened. My footsteps were steady as I climbed the stairs. But inside? Chaos.I walked into my room and shut the door firmly behind me and then I locked it. It wasn’t even because I was afraid someone would come in, but because I needed silence.I went straight to the bathroom sink and turned on the water, letting the cold feel of the water run down my spine.I stared at my reflection as it ran as I tightened my jaw and I lifted my hand slowly but annoyingly her scent was still there, but a bit faint.Heat flashed through me again this time and I inhaled once. Then again, and before I could stop myself, my thumb brushed my lower lip unconsciously. And in that moment, I tasted her as a low exhale left me. I gripped the edge of the sink har

Zara’s POVI don’t remember who moved first. Maybe it was him. Maybe it was me. Maybe it was the space between us finally snapping. One second we were staring at each other like enemies standing across a battlefield. The next— His hand reaching for my waist. And my mouth was on his.It wasn’t soft this time. It wasn’t hesitant, felt more like a third-time collision. His lips crushed against mine like he’d been holding back for weeks and finally gave up pretending he didn’t want this. His glass slipped from his hand and shattered somewhere on the kitchen floor, but neither of us flinched.I grabbed his shirt, he grabbed my hips. And suddenly we were no longer standing still. We were devouring. His mouth moved against mine with hunger, real hunger not even the calculated control he always wore like armor.I felt it in the way he exhaled through his nose. In the way his fingers tightened almost painfully at my waist. His wounded hand, which I had noticed yesterday brushed my side and I g

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 37

Matteo’s POVI had just stepped into my study when my phone vibrated in my pocket. One vibration. Then came another. As I stared at my screen I realized it was a private line calling. And only three men I know used it in contacting me.I answered without greeting.“Yes.”Luca’s voice came through, tight. “We have a situation.”My jaw hardened instantly at the sound of that. Knowing there was trouble. “Define situation.”“There’s been movement at the docks. One of ours. He’s talking.”“Who?”“Rico.”My eyes went cold, Rico had been with us for more than six years. Handled shipments. Trusted routes.“If he’s talking,” I said calmly, “why is he still breathing?”A pause came from the other end of the call.“We wanted your word.” He said. And well of course they did. Because this wasn’t a minor betrayal. This was a crack in the foundation of what I’ve built. And cracks spread.“Where is he?” I asked.“Warehouse thirteen.”“I’ll be there in twenty.”I hung up. And just like that—The part

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 36

Zara’s POVThe music was loud again, almost too loud for my ears to handle. Bass vibrating through my bones, lights flashing red and blue across my skin, and smoke.I was back at the club. Back in that dress. Back in the heat of bodies and reckless laughter.Alex’s hand was on my waist again. But it wasn’t him I was looking at. It was Matteo.Standing across the room. Watching. His eyes were darker than the club lights, his expression clearer than the music, cutting through everything until there was only me and him and that unbearable pull between us.Alex leaned closer in the dream.“Relax,” he whispered against my ear. But Matteo’s gaze hardened in a possessive kind of way. I tried to move toward him. Or maybe away from him.But I couldn’t. The music warped. Faces blurred. Suddenly the club wasn’t the club anymore. It was the living room. The couch. Matteo’s hand on my waist. His mouth on mine. The kiss from the other night. The one I had pretended didn’t matter. The one I had repl

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 35

Matteo’s POVThe moment her footsteps disappeared upstairs, I moved. I walked straight out of the dining room and down the corridor toward my study, jaw locked so tight it ached. The door shut behind me with more force than necessary.I mean my father’s presence in my house was already an irritation. Her sitting at that table tonight made it worse. Because he had seen it. The tension. The cracks between us.And Theo Ferraro never missed weakness. The minute I walked in, I poured myself a drink I didn’t need. The glass trembled faintly against the crystal decanter. And then came a knock at the doorBut I didn’t answer and it opened anyway. Of course it did.“Still slamming doors like a child?” my father’s voice echoed calmly behind me, but I didn’t turn.“You didn’t announce your arrival,” I finally said.“I shouldn’t have to.”I took a slow sip of whiskey before facing him. “You enjoy theatrics.”“And you enjoy defiance.” He said and then stepped fully inside, closing the door behind
