CHAPTER 12: JEALOUSY

The morning was bright and quiet as I walked through the estate gardens. I was wearing an oversized knit sweater over a high-collared shirt—mostly because my usual fitted pants were getting a little tight around my waist.

"Well, look who’s enjoying his stolen victory."

I stopped. Tyla stepped out from behind a hedge, his face twisted in pure spite. His usual sweet, helpless Omega act was completely gone.

"Walking pretty tall today, aren't you, Soren?" Tyla sneered, stepping closer. "Enjoying playing the grand corporate heir next to James?"

"The land belongs to my family, Tyla," I said coolly. "If you have a problem, talk to the lawyers."

Tyla scoffed and suddenly lunged forward as if to shove me. My instincts instantly took over. I took a quick step back, my hands jumping down to cover and protect my stomach.

Tyla froze. His eyes darted straight to my hands, then to my high collar and my heavy sweater.

"What's wrong with you?" Tyla murmured, narrowing his eyes. "You're acting jumpy. And why are you wearing clothes three sizes too big in warm weather?"

"I don't owe you any explanations," I said coldly, stepping around him. "Stay away from my room, Tyla."

He didn't follow me, but I knew his suspicious mind was already spinning.

Meanwhile, at the office, James was having a bizarre morning. He sat at his heavy desk, feeling completely exhausted out of nowhere. On top of that, he had a crazy craving for sour pickles.

His secretary, Arthur, walked in and paused. "Sir? Are you okay? You look pale."

"I'm fine, Arthur," James grunted, holding his lower stomach. "Just tired."

"Sir, you've been tired and moody for a week," Arthur said, trying not to smile. "Maybe you should see your family doctor, Dr. Stone?"

Two hours later, James was sitting in Dr. Stone’s office. The old family doctor ran a quick scan and laughed softly. "Well, James, physically you're fine. But your hormones show Couvade syndrome."

James frowned. "What's that?"

"It happens to Prime Alphas when their partner is pregnant," Dr. Stone chuckled. "Your body is copying your partner's symptoms—nausea, fatigue, and cravings. So either you have a weird virus, or you have a pregnant Omega."

James froze. "That's impossible. I'm just overworked."

He left the clinic in total denial. Soren? Pregnant? No way. Soren was focused on revenge.

When James got back to the estate, he found me in the study. He stood in the doorway, staring at my baggy sweater. "Soren... is there something you want to tell me?"

I looked up calmly. "About the company?"

"No," James said, stepping closer. "About why you're wearing huge clothes and refusing wine."

"I just like big sweaters, James," I lied smoothly. "And my stomach is still sensitive."

James stared at me, unsatisfied, but nodded and left.

Determined to clear his head, James walked into his bedroom to grab his watch from the nightstand drawer. But tucked in the back, he found a small velvet box. Inside were scent-blocking patches and a small white plastic stick.

Two pink lines glowed on the screen.

James stopped breathing. He’s pregnant. With my baby.

A rush of pure joy hit his chest, followed immediately by confusion and worry. He grabbed the test, walked straight back into the study, and slammed it gently onto the desk in front of me.

My heart dropped into my stomach. I looked down at the stick, my mouth going completely dry. I knew I was in trouble, and there was no way I could lie out of this anymore.

"Are you going to explain this, Soren?" James asked, his voice low and strained.

I swallowed hard, pulling my sweater tighter around myself. "Fine. Yes, I'm pregnant. But James, you should just stay out of it. We signed a contract. Our deal is about corporate revenge against Matthew and Victor, nothing more. We just need to focus on that."

James stared at me as if I had just struck him across the face. "Stay out of it? It's my child, Soren!"

"It doesn't change our business plan," I insisted, keeping my guard up. "Don't get involved."

James didn't yell. He just closed his eyes, his smoked cedar scent darkening with intense heartbreak. He slowly backed away and left the room without another word.

Deep down, James was devastated. He felt completely rejected, concluding that I simply didn't want him—that I saw him as nothing more than a temporary tool for revenge. What I didn't realize was that James had loved me ever since that first night we spent together. He had been falling deeper for me every single day, and hearing me reduce everything to a business contract crushed him.

Feeling deeply moody and defeated, James drove straight back to the office.

He slumped into his chair, staring blankly out the window. Arthur walked in a few minutes later, setting a cup of coffee on the desk. He took one look at his boss's miserable expression and sighed softly.

"Sir... what happened?" Arthur asked gently.

James rubbed his face, his voice quiet and heavy. "Hypothetically... what do you do if a friend loves his partner, but the partner doesn't feel the same way? What if the friend just found out the partner is pregnant, but kept it a secret because they only care about business?"

Arthur listened quietly, but he couldn't help a small, sympathetic smile from forming on his face. Arthur knew his boss far too well. He knew James wasn't talking about any "friend." He had seen the way James looked at me, and he remembered how endlessly James had searched for me after that night.

"Well, sir," Arthur said softly, "if this 'friend' truly loves his partner, he shouldn't give up so easily. Sometimes people build high walls when they've been hurt before. Maybe the partner is just scared."

James looked up at Arthur, silent for a long moment, as the words slowly sank in.

CHAPTER 25: GONEJames cleared his entire schedule. He told me at breakfast, setting his phone face down on the table as if it were something dangerous."No meetings and no calls. Arthur will handle anything urgent." He reached for his tea. "Today we do whatever you want.""Whatever I want?""Within reason. You're supposed to be resting."I tried to remember the last time anyone had asked me what I wanted. I picked the market on the east side because Charles used to take me there when we were students. James had never been. He walked through the stalls in jeans and an old grey sweater with his sleeves pushed up and his hands stuffed in his pockets, a Prime Alpha surrounded by crates of oranges, and a woman selling dumplings called him sir three times before she asked if he was lost.I laughed until I had to hold the edge of her stall. We ate dumplings from paper boxes standing in the cold. We ate sugared nuts and a pastry that fell apart in James's hands. In the afternoon we found a s

CHAPTER 24: THE SALE Dr. Harris had told me to rest. I went home instead and found James still awake in the study with the lights low and a stack of reports he had not opened. He looked up when I came in. "You're late. And you're pale." "I'm tired." I took off my coat slowly so he would not see my hands. "James, I need to talk to you about Mercer Holdings." He set down his pen. "Sit down first." I sat. The pain was gone but my legs still felt unsteady. I had practiced the words in the van and they came out calmer than I felt. "I think the only solution left is for me to sell it." "To whom?" "To you." The silence stretched. James did not move. "I don't want to keep fighting," I said. "I don't want myself or the baby anywhere near this anymore. I want a quiet life and I want to move past all of it. I'll sell you the majority of the shares and leave my father a small stake so the family name stays on the register. I won't keep anything." "No." He said it before I finished. He

CHAPTER 23: THE PLAN After the lawyers I sat in the BMW with the folder on my lap and did not start the engine for a long time. When I finally drove I took the long way round, and by the time I reached Charles's street it was four hours since I had left the office tower. I should have known from the corner. Reporters had worked out that I came to the bakery every day, and now a crowd waited outside the shop with cameras and microphones. A man stood on the pavement describing the building to a lens as if it were a crime scene. I parked a block away and went in through the back lane. Charles had the door open before I knocked. The shop was dark except for the kitchen. Chairs sat upside down on the tables. The display cases were still full of croissants and bread and snacks that should have sold out by now. Not one tray was empty. "Is it always like this now?" I asked. "Since the leak." Charles shrugged but his shoulders were stiff. "Half my regulars stopped coming. The other half

CHAPTER 22: The numbers came in at market open.I was in James's study when Arthur turned the monitor toward us. A red line ran down the screen like a cut. Vance Enterprises had lost twenty percent in the first hour."It's the story," Arthur said. "Analysts are calling it a governance risk. They think the CEO was deceived by his own husband.""Deceived," James repeated flatly."That's the word on three financial channels."James didn't look at the screen again. He looked at me. "It will recover.""Will it?" I asked."Markets forget." He said it with great calm but his fingers pressed white against the edge of the desk.By noon the loss had grown to twenty-six percent. The board called an emergency meeting and James left for it with his jaw set. He kissed my forehead at the door. I stood in the quiet study afterward and listened to the car pull away.I turned on the television in the sitting room and muted it but the ticker kept crawling beneath the anchors. CHAPTER 21: The headline hit before breakfast.Arthur stood in the dining hall doorway holding a tablet out in both hands. "Sir, you need to see this. Both of you."James took it first. I watched his jaw tighten as he read.MERCER HEIR'S CONTRACT MARRIAGE EXPOSED. WAS THE VANCE HEIR A BUSINESS DEAL?Below it was a scan of our contract with my signature at the bottom, small and neat."Where did they get this?" James asked quietly."The tabloid says an anonymous source," Arthur said. "It came in at five this morning. By six it was everywhere."Everyone in the room looked unsteady. Arthur's hands were perfectly still."Matthew," I said. "It has to be Matthew.""His lawyers have had him since yesterday," James said. "But he could have passed it along before that. Or Tyla could have.""Either of them would have wanted this," Arthur agreed. He took the tablet back gently.I read the article over James's shoulder anyway. CHAPTER 20: Matthew paced behind his desk like a caged animal. His phone buzzed against the floor, and he scooped it up and pressed it to his ear. "Where are you? What happened?" he demanded. "Did you get anything? "He knows, Matthew! He knows everything!" Tyla's voice cracked with terror over the line. "James caught me, and now they're saying Soren is carrying his baby. We're finished! James is going to destroy us! The phone slipped from Matthew's fingers and clattered onto the desk. His face drained of color. Every careful plan he had built was coming apart. Early the next morning, the counter-attack began. The boardroom of Mercer Holdings was glass-walled and silent, the board members stiff in their leather chairs. James walked in first, his presence filling the room. I walked beside him in a sharp, tailored suit, my head held high, one hand resting briefly at my stomach before I let it fall. Arthur followed and laid a copy of the audit files in front of every board
