ELYSIA.

I blinked, frozen on my spot as I stared at Zane who stared back at me coldly. I didn't know what to do or how to react. Should the ground just open up for me to fall?

Everything, all of the memories came rushing back to me like they had been waiting for this moment.

How he had spilled coffee on me and insulted me on the spot instead of apologizing, how Nova and I had confronted him at the club that night, the shock at the realization of him being the son of the man my mother got married to.

What exactly does the universe have against me?

"Miss--" Zane raised a brow, narrowing his gaze at me.

Why was he pretending like he doesn't know me?

"Hayes." I quickly completed it. "Elysia Hayes."

Maybe it was for the best. I didn't want to know him either. Hmph!

He stepped forward, his hand went into his pocket. "You're welcome to Z&Co Luxury Hotel Chains."

"Thank you-- sir." The last word felt sour coming out of my mouth. The side of his lips curled up, he was enjoying this.

"Let me use this medium to plead to you." He stopped just a few feet from me. "Be on your best behavior while you're at work and make sure to respect your superiors, even if they spill coffee on you..." He bent slightly. "Don't curse. Any complaint about disrespect regarding you and you'll get a penalty."

Coffee huh? He was playing with me.

I swallowed back the urge to snap at him and nodded. "Yes sir, I'll be on my best behavior."

"Good. You can enjoy the rest of your day." He turned, leaving with his secretary scurrying behind him like a mouse.

I just stared at his retreating back, fighting back the urge to rush you with anything and knock him out.

*

"No way!" Nova screamed with wide eyes.

The minute I left the office for lunch, I called Nova who rushed to the restaurant I was at within minutes. Couldn't skip a hot tea like this for anything.

I sighed, sipping my milkshake. "Yes, way."

"He's your boss all these while you insulted him?"

"I insulted him?" I blinked with wide eyes. "I wasn't the only one who insulted him, remember? Why are you trying to push all of it on me?"

"Well, he's not my boss." She shrugged.

"Seriously, Nova?" Again, I shouldn't be shocked at how easily she could ditch someone.

It's not the first time Nova's throwing me under the bus.

"Stop staring at me like that, I'm sure if he sees me, he won't be able to recognize me. That's for a fact."

"Zane doesn't forget people easily, he holds grudges." I stated.

"Then I'll be out of sight, simple."

Someone, remind me next time to use Nova as an example of friends to avoid in my next life.

"You're still around the safe comer.” She said, "You're in a department he barely reaches, you two won't even see all the time." She shrugged.

She had a point, and Zane didn't seem like the kind of boss that walks around for leisure. I'm sure he'll rather spend his free time watching the entire city from his office floor.

I sighed and smiled widely. "You're right Nova, it can't be that bad."

*

"What? Me? Why?" My eyes were as wide as a saucer as I stared at, what's her name again? Oh right, Kim.

She was a senior analyst and just when I arrived from my lunch break, she gave me a stack of files to take to Zane's office.

"We need someone to submit the files to the CEO, you just have to go to his office floor and give it to his secretary." She said,

I couldn't argue with her, I couldn't cause trouble on my first day. I walked toward the elevator.

Just when I thought I'd stay out of Zane's sight, someone just had to push me to him.

Later, I would go see a clairvoyant to check what exactly was wrong with my life, and just how horribly my stay in this company might end up.

"Good day." I greeted, stopping in front of the secretary's desk. "I'm here with some files for the CEO."

"Mr. Z, you say." She corrected me with a glare.

Oh! "I'm sorry, the files are here for Mr. Z." I stretched them to her. "Here."

Mr. Z? Was he the suggestor of this name? Cringe!

Instead of replying, she picked up the phone on her desk and placed it on her ear. "Sir, the files you asked for from the-- marketing team are here... Oh? Okay, sir." She dropped the phone. "Go in." She seethed.

"Excuse me?" I couldn't even tell what her bitterness was for, she just kept giving me the stink eye.

"Go in. He wants you to submit the files yourself."

Unable to complain, I knocked lightly on the door and pushed it open gently. I slipped into the office, stopping just a few feet from his table.

He looked busy and only stopped when I said. "Good day... sir." He raised his head and I added. "The files from the marketing team."

"Oh." He leaned against his chair with an annoying smile on his lips. "You can keep them over there... Elysia Hayes."

I dropped the files like he asked and turned to leave but his voice stopped me. "I didn't say you could leave, Miss Elysia Hayes."

I exhaled, shutting my eyes and absorbing the anger that was threatening to spill. It was already embarrassing and unlucky enough that the stepbrother I loathed was the same person I'm meant to call boss in a company I've been wanting to work in.

At this point, I didn't think it could get any worse.

"I have a question." He said.

I squinted my eyes in unease. "Okay?" The word morphed into a question.

His riling smirk widened, it was the kind I wanted to smack out of his face. "How does it feel to have the table turned against you... Stepsister?”

ZANE. "What do you mean I'm your secretary? What happened to Dahlia?" Elysia had her hands on her waist demandingly. "She's been doing her job diligently, hasn't she?"Sure enough, I had expected this, but she delivered it a little more dramatically. I didn't want to smile, even if I was enjoying her outburst. "The last time I checked, I'm the CEO of this company. And I decide who leaves and who stays, and also who'll be my secretary, and that's you.""What if I choose not to be your secretary?""You have no choice, doll, but there is an option though." I raised a brow; the side of my lips curled up. She looked both interested and suspicious. "And that's leaving the company entirely."She groaned. "Why are you like this? How can I jump from being a junior analyst to your secretary within just a month? What kind of promotion is that? It's not like you have any idea how I've been--" "Of course I do." I cut in. "You heard the heartfelt speech I gave about how good you've been at your

ELYSIA. Bryan scoffed; of course he was unwilling to stand. I gave him all the eye signals there were, but he didn't move. Instead, he looked up at Zane, who was still giving him a chilly glare. Shouldn't the glare make him realize he was treading on a lethal line? But no, it was either he was too ignorant, or he really had no idea what he was getting himself into. Immediately, I remembered what happened last night; Zane was giving Bryan the same look. "Bryan, that's his spot," I said softly. "You can sit here instead--""Don't make a move, doll." Zane cut in, making me halt. "Sit your ass back down."I had initially wanted Bryan to take my spot, but I sat down at Zane's command. Goosebumps appeared all over my body, and all I wanted to do at the moment was to make sure Bryan didn't get the same fate as Mr. Roger. "I have no idea what's making your boss cranky, but I guess it's a cue for me to leave." Bryan stood up and smiled at me. "I still have your contact; I'll call you, and

ELYSIA. Before I left for home that night, I stopped by Zane's office like he instructed. I would've bluntly told him not to bother about the clothes because I literally had no intentions of wearing them again but it would be rude of me. Directly rude. So I can make it indirect by taking the clothes and trashing them. There's no way he expects me to wear the same clothes that's been kissed by a dead man's blood. Please, I can't afford a nightmare. The elevator dinged and the doors slid open to Zane's office foyer. I stepped out, sighing while mentally preparing how to take the clothes without making my disgust too obvious. Dahlia who looked busy with whatever she was doing didn't bother raising her head even if she noticed my presence. "Hello Dahlia, please is Mr. Zane in?""He's not." She deadpanned. "You can wait over there for him.""Oh..." I stuttered. "Can't I just sit--" I stopped talking when she gave me a glare. I swallowed back the rest of the words and kept standing.

ZANE. I could feel her glare on me until she left the living room. Finally earning my privacy, I picked up my phone and dialed the number of my personal assistant, Blake. "How is it going?" I asked the second he answered the call. "The body has been taken care of, and I've made sure the manager is settled." He replied. I nodded in satisfaction. "Good. And I need one last favor. Have a fresh set of female clothes delivered in the morning, before I leave for the office.""Yes, sir." He said, and I ended the call. I left the couch and went to the guest room, where Elysia was. I opened the door and stood in the door frame. I observed her figure underneath the duvet; it looked like she was asleep. I walked over to the switch beside the door and flicked it off. The only light that lit up the room was the one beside the bed; it was dim, but bright enough for her to move around the room without difficulty. Just when I turned to leave, I heard her voice. "Why did you kill him?" Her voic

ELYSIA. Shaken was simply an understatement for my reaction. I have no idea how I was taken away from that place, but when I was finally able to breathe, I noticed we were already in the car. And on our way home. Home. I wanted to be there so much. I wanted to hug Mom until I felt better. I wanted to be away from... His presence. His side. The pictures kept appearing, vividly—the fresh blood, his wide eyes, his lips that were parted in shock. I'm sure even he didn't believe he would be killed that way. It was unexpected. It was silent. My brows creased when I noticed Zane took another route. It wasn't where I was familiar with. I wanted to ask where I was going, but it was either that I was too shocked that my tongue was literally tied and unable to form a word, or I was just too scared to even speak to Zane. Or maybe it was both. I stared out the window. I wanted to unwind the car glass, but my whole muscles felt stiff. It was impossible to even move a finger. I watched

ELYSIA. I woke up on Monday morning, feeling more energetic than usual. I've never been a morning person, but today felt different. The reason felt mysterious to me, or rather, I didn't want to dwell on it. I arrived at the office feeling more hyper than usual; even Valentino, my superior, looked stunned to see me this excited. I couldn't blame him, since I realized Zane was my boss, I always arrive at work looking gloomy. "Good morning, Mr. Valentino." I beamed. "Good morning, Elysia. You're... Wow. You look stunning, by the way." He raised the cup of coffee he was holding. "Thank you.""Dahlia just left, the CEO wants you in his office in..." He checked his wrist watch. "Twenty minutes. I think he's not in the office yet.""Oh." I smiled and nodded. "Alright." "I sent a few files to your email, by the way, just help me track the social media campaigns and give me some feedback on them. I want it before you go over to the CEO's office.""Noted." I adjusted my seat and turned on
