169| The Queen's Mark

Anita's eyes widens. She's realizing that all I've been saying was to bring her in for questioning. “I'm not attending any questioning. I don't know anything about it therefore my presence isn't needed.’

I arch my brow. “You dare defy a royal order despite this much evidence?” I turn to Lord Veyra. “You must admit that with all these evidence, it will not speak well of the kingdom if Anita is not at least questioned. If she's indeed innocent, she has nothing to fear. Justice will be served and she can leave freely.”

I'm placing Lord Veyra in a very tricky trap. Though he's a corrupt noble, he loves to put up a righteous front in the midst of others. With several people here, there's no way he'll deny my words.

Lord Veyra brings his eyes low, avoiding directly staring at me. “Of course Your Majesty.”

I turn to Anita. “Even your father agrees. So there's nothing stopping you from coming in for questioning.”
