Rain's POV What?!Was the Alpha trying so hard to make fun of me? What did he mean by that? While one part of me believed I didn't hear him properly, the other part of me was more than certain that I did. “Wh—what did you say?” “What did you hear?” The beast did nothing but smile, the way he ate his meal told me he was waiting for this moment. I could see it right there, on his face. “In case I did not mention, which I'm sure I did: you'll resume next week. I'll speak with Lady Agnes and let her know this. You must do a good job, more than a good job even. The Alpha doesn't like to eat nonsense.” Did the Alpha not know I would make nonsense? A sigh only I could hear escaped my mouth. I managed a smile I would never mean, not with a beast. “My Lord.” It was the fakest of all bows but I did what I could. “You must understand that cooking is not something I can do. Even if I should make your meals, I'm sure I should learn something from the head of the maids who would be willing
Kane's POVThe more I looked at her, the more anger I felt towards her. The other day, I gave a hard task, something I would not have given to a maid in this Pack. Now that I thought about it, there has never been a time when a maid or woman from The Deathbringer Pack would pluck oranges. Even other kinds of fruits. This was none other than the reason that they were women and shouldn't be seen climbing trees. Not a single remorse I felt for what I had done. A part of me would even love to do more. It was only late in the afternoon and these thoughts ran around in my head. There was nothing I did not come up with, anything at all to make sure Rain suffers. Anything that would make her be punished accordingly, whether or not the other punishments I had given were good or not. A knock on my door distracted me. I got up, I shouldn't have but I did. “Come on in and pass your message.” I ordered and at that moment, the door pushed open. Darius, the man who watched over my door stepp
Alec’s POV From the look of things, it was going to be a long walk. One I knew I would enjoy. “Let me have that,” I reached for the bowl. She didn't try to stop me, she didn't try to refuse and it told me a lot. More than a lot. Rain needed a break. She needed to rest. “I'm sorry about everything. Everything you're going through. You know you can always talk to me about anything at all. Anything and everything.” “Thank you so much, Beta Alec.” Silence ruled the moment, the walk. There wasn't much that I had to say. A part of me wanted to ask how she was being treated but on second thought, I could see it for myself. Why would Kane ask her to be at that tree? Did he forget we needed this woman in his life more than I needed her in mine? Why so mean to her?“There are so many trees in the whole of this Pack, but the Alpha loves to eat from this very one. You'll see it when we get there. He eats from the others but they're not meant for him. The other Alphas before him ate from
Rain's POV I stopped in my tracks, the large tray remained in my hand. Almost two weeks have passed since we last saw each other. It was strange. Very strange but I wasn't mad at him. Not any longer. The mate bond was doing more than enough already. One more step and I stood right in front of him. “Beta Alec.” My head bent and I bowed. “Good day, my lord. It's been a while. How are you today?” Looking back at his face, I now planted a smile. One I knew I meant. “Rain—” He whispered more than he spoke. “My Lord.” “How are you?” The tall man looked behind him, then he faced me again and let out. “It's been a while, indeed. How have you been and are you alright?” “I am doing well—” But I wasn't. I was worse than before when I wasn't a maid to the Alpha. Life was worse back then and now? It was more than worse. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to run away, a sigh ran out of my mouth when I met his gaze again. “How are you too?” As the Beta spoke, I didn't hear anything that he said.
Alec’s POV The announcement did nothing but shock me. What was Kane talking about? I looked up and met his gaze, hoping it'll be all smiles and that would prove to me that he was joking. But there was nothing as such, not a single smile on his countenance, and rather, Kane's face had the most serious countenance ever. “What is going on?” “How do you mean?” “What do you mean by how do I mean, Alpha Kane? The last time I checked, you didn't want that woman close to Rain. How come you want her to become a maid in this same Pack? Can you make this make some sense?” “There's nothing to explain Alec.” I was on my feet now, shaking my head. “I am the Beta of this pack. My job is to know what's on your mind and why you're making up your mind to do it. Unless you don't consider me worthy any longer, then I could step down for someone worthy enough.” “You won't try to manipulate me into speaking.” It was Kane's turn to rise. He walked closer and stopped right in front of me, a smile on
Alec’s POV I lay on my bed, face up with many thoughts that ran around in my head. There was nothing I hadn't thought about since I walked into my chamber a while ago. After answering to Kane who did nothing but command me around. It was my role and tasks, after all. I now sat up, my thoughts drifting to Rain. I thought about how she was doing, fairing as a maid to the man himself. It's been a week since the verdict and I hadn't laid eyes on her. She was with the Alpha almost all the time and didn't need my protection any longer. According to Kane, I didn't have to go with her everywhere any longer, just as I did before. I had asked why and his words were the same as I had expected. “When she was in your care, how well did you take care of her?” There was no need to argue, I didn't do well even. But if only the Alpha knew, he would understand that she was more important to me than she was to him. But this—was a secret. There was no need to let him know. I could lose my Beta ro
