Luca left, and I stayed behind.

The apartment was quiet. Too quiet. It wasn’t until around lunchtime that the stillness began to wear on me. I had no phone. No way to contact anyone. No distractions. Just... silence.

Out of boredom and frustration, I wandered into the kitchen. I wasn’t exactly angry, just restless. I started rummaging through the cabinets, hoping for something to make me feel less alone. To my surprise, I found junk food tucked away, packaged crepes, cookies, biscuits... whatever it was, it would do. I grabbed some and munched on them like a kid hiding snacks under their bed. It became my only form of entertainment as the hours dragged on.

Time passed slowly. I watched the light shift across the room, the way the sun slowly dipped below the skyline. By the time it finally disappeared, casting the apartment into dusky shadows, I was on edge.

Then, the door opened. Something in me froze. My heart skipped. I didn’t know why, but I was suddenly on high alert, breath caugh

Still, the silence between us lingered long enough for me to break it.“I’ve seen you around… You live next door, right?” I asked“Yup. That modern grey house that looks like it’s judging the rest of the street.”I chuckled. “It’s beautiful. Do they pay teachers that well here?”Dana burst out laughing. “God, no. If only.”“Oh... I just assumed, you know… that house...”“I don’t own it,” she said, waving her hand. “It’s my brother’s. He’s filthy rich and barely home. Works in the city comes by some weekends to show off his new car and judge my parenting.”I smiled, then caught myself.“Sorry if that’s too much,” she added, watching me closely. “I’m used to saying things out loud.”“No, it’s fine,” I said quickly. “I just… wasn’t sure if there was a husband in the picture.”She shook her head. “Nope. Single mom club. Official member. Just me and my girl. You?”I hesitated. “Same.”Because I was, wasn't I? Basically since Leon was just an embryo to now. His father has never acknowledged

Luca sighed. “Asher doesn’t know where you are.”“What?” I asked taken off guard by his admission.“I did this for his own good,” Luca said, brushing past the shock on my face. “He told me to take you to point A. I brought you to point C. That’s all you need to know.”I stood frozen, unsure what to say. Confused, overwhelmed."So, I am going to remind you again, not to do anything stupid."Then Luca did something I didn’t expect. He stepped forward, kissed my forehead gently, and said, “Let me say goodbye to my favourite little guy.”And just like that, he left while I was still standing there, stunned.I had been in a cage, controlled, and monitored. Now suddenly, Leon would go to school. That I could go outside, wherever I want. Get a job. Live like a normal person. And Asher wasn’t even here.I wanted to run. The thought crept into my mind instantly. But then I remembered Christian. There had to be people watching. They wouldn’t have made it this easy. Was this freedom?A test?No

Luca drives. And drives. And drives. At some point, I must have dozed off. When I blink back to consciousness, we’re parked in front of a building, not nearly as grand as the one I’d just left behind when Asher found me. It’s not terrible, but it’s older, and worn down. The kind of place where no one asks questions and everyone minds their business. It reminds me too much of the apartment I lived in before Asher found me.I rub my eyes and squint at the building. “Is this the place?” I ask groggily.Luca doesn’t respond. He just mutters, “About time,” then swings his door open and steps out.I guess that’s my cue.I open my door and climb out, the stiff air greeting me. Luca’s already heading inside, so I follow, dragging my feet. We take the stairs, one flight, then another until we’re in a dim hallway. He stops at a door, unlocks it, and walks in like he owns the place.Something feels… off. I hesitate, standing at the doorway, frowning. But then I step inside. It’s cold. The space

I felt gaslighted. Manipulated. Blindsided.“What do you mean? What are you saying, Luca?”“I’m saying you’re leaving today,” he repeated calmly. “Leon and Maria will follow tomorrow.”“What?” I blinked. “Why? I’m not leaving without my son. Are you kidding me?” My voice was rising. “There’s no way I’m leaving here without Leon. It’s either both of us, or it’s nothing at all.”I took a breath, desperate, my eyes flicking toward Leon and Maria, silently praying he would say this was some kind of sick joke. But Luca wasn’t joking. The man standing by the door didn’t move. Still like a statue. Watching.“You too,” Luca snapped at him, sharp and commanding. The man nodded and left. Now it was just the two of us in the hallway.“I’m doing this for you,” Luca said gently.I shook my head, voice low and trembling. “No. I’m not leaving without my son. There’s no way I’m leaving him behind. No. I can’t.”“I’m going to need you to trust me,” he said again, as if that would change anything.“I d

My breath caught in my throat, and I just stared, waiting.“You’ll go with Luca,” he said gently. “It’ll be a little while before I see you again. I have to deal with Alex. He’s... unstable, as you’ve seen. And until I do, I need to know that you’re safe.”“I’m fine,” I whispered, already feeling my resolve weaken. “I’m okay.”I walked toward him without even thinking. He pulled me into his arms and held me so tightly I could feel his heartbeat racing against mine. It felt like he couldn’t believe I was real... like we were real. I hugged him back with the same intensity, letting my walls fall for just a second.This.... this was what I’d wanted to do the moment Alex had left. If only Asher hadn’t torn me apart last night with accusations. If only…He kissed my forehead, breathing in deeply.“I wish we had more time,” he murmured. “But we don’t. I have to go.”I nodded. I understood. I believed him.“Luca will give you the rest of the instructions,” he said. “Don’t worry. I’ll call yo
