BLAZE.

“Get the car,” I ordered Sergio. He nodded and we were in the car in minutes. I had left extra orders for the remaining men at my suite.

I could have sent my men alone to do the work but I had doubts and risking Micah’s life wasn't an option.

I switched off the headlights two blocks away from Pendle Street and continued on to the street in neutral. The driver seat was occupied by my trusted Sergio who inspected his gun as if he were afraid it would let him down. The other two were sitting in the back seat and did not breathe heavily at all.

Micah's voice kept ringing in my head from the call. He sounded distressed, desperate: "They have Farris." It was obvious that he asked me for help, practically pleading with me before I hung up. "Please, Blaze. Don't make me choose between my deacon and your code."

I refused to explain anything to him then and I was not going to do that right now.

The plan was already made. Bowscut believed they had some power over the new priest. But obviously their plan was to lure me out in order to observe my reaction. They were going to see how I was going to react and that was definitely not going to be nice.

However, there was something that troubled me. What was the reason they did not take him by themselves? Were they still skeptical?

I had fed them the pure trail of breadcrumbs through one of their lower-level lackeys we had converted last month: Micah was going to pay an unexpected visit late at night to an abandoned warehouse dock, to “pray for the deacon.” Alone, before coming to them like a lamb to the slaughter. At 3:45 in the morning.

They would take the bait. They were predators and they always did when it looked easy and divine.

I checked my watch. 3:37. I was right on schedule.

“Are you sure about this, boss?” whispered Sergio. “You don’t want to see Micah?”

Nah. They would be expecting me there, so I sent someone else in disguise. They would be in the house by then, and I hoped to God that Micah was obeying their commands, because he had no choice but to.

I did not look at him. “They wanted the priest. They’ll get me instead.”

We moved like smoke. I went through the side door first, my coat collar raised. The place stank of iron and old fish, just like the rest of this rotten fringe of Haloshul. There were two of them in the warehouse already, waiting in the middle of it all beneath a single hanging light bulb. Farris was there on his knees with his hands zip-tied and a swollen, bruised face.

These Bowscuts feared absolutely nothing. Including a servant of the Lord.

I walked out of the shadows.

One of them saw me suddenly, surprised. "What the fuck— Where's his collar?"

"Change of plans," I said coolly. "You either hand him over or you will have to deal with me."

The taller one grinned and reached for his gun. "The boss said the priest was the weak point. Looks like we got an upgrade."

He didn't get to finish his thoughts and his eyes shot out when he saw my men with Sergio arrive from the east.

They clocked their guns and shot, hitting their mark. The taller one dropped. The second tried to run and caught a round in the leg. I was already moving for Farris, my knife out, slicing the ties.

That’s when the third man—the one we hadn’t seen—fired from the catwalk above.

I felt the bullet whip past my ear, close enough to burn. I twisted, returning fire, but the ricochet caught me. A jagged shard of metal from a ruptured barrel sliced across my left side, deep under the ribs. The pain was hot and immediate. Thick red blood soaked my shirt in seconds.

I ignored the pain and kept moving.

I hauled Farris up with one arm, firing cover with the other. “Move as fast as I do.”

We got out. Barely. Sergio dragged the surviving Bowscut guy into our trunk for later questioning. I left a message carved into the taller one’s chest with my knife—short, clear, and personal. “Pendle Street is closed.”

By the time I reached Micah’s housing unit, the adrenaline had burned down to a dull roar and my side felt like someone was holding a lighter to it. I didn’t knock. I still had the key from years ago.

The guards pushed back the gun they had brought out, back at their waist. “Boss.” They greeted me.

“Give us a minute,” I said and walked in. I slotted the key and the door opened.

He was standing in the middle of the living room, phone in his shaking hand, thumb hovering over the police emergency number. His eyes were a bit pink and I held back a surprised gaze for a while. There was no way he was crying. He probably stressed so much and couldn't sleep.

His collar crooked from touching it too much. He looked every inch terrified and I could tell he was blaming himself. That was nice. It could work to my advantage.

I closed the door behind me, and he jumped in shock.

“Don’t,” I said, stopping him from talking for only a second until his gaze dropped to the blood spreading across my shirt. His lips parted. “You’re hurt.”

“It’s just a scratch.”

“And Farris?” He muttered.

Wonderful. He lost the appeal to feel pity for me in seconds when he remembered his Deacon father in the Lord.

“Farris is safe. He’s in a car two blocks from the cathedral with a doctor on the way.” I stick out a finger. “You're not allowed to visit until he's done.”

He didn't get the message like I expected and looked down his phone then back to me. I knew what he was thinking and he had better not try it.

MICAH.The red tail lights of the black Bentley disappeared into the distance, shrinking until the car disappeared around the corner. The street fell silent. My chest felt hollow, my lungs gasped for breath. I was staring into the empty space where the car had just been."You okay?"I blinked and turned my head. Jeremy stood a few feet away, regarding me with a frown on his face and a questioning look in his eyes. He turned his gaze from my face down to the empty road, then back at me. "You've been staring at the spot where his car disappeared for a full minute now. Did you drop a contact lens or are you trying to beat some kind of world record for an absent-minded stare?"I forced a strained smile on my face. "Drop a contact lens? No. I don't wear that. I was simply contemplating the exquisite quality of the city's paving. The municipality's work is truly something to marvel at. You might want to have a look yourself, see the view from the perspective of an average commuter.""Wow. H

BLAZE.Damien flinched at the sheer venom in my voice, but he tried to stand tall, flashing white-toothed grin that could have come from the loony bin. "You heard me. Your little whore of a priest. Imagine my surprise when I learnt you had a fantasy for commiting incest. I didn't know you liked to fuck your younger brother. I can do better if you'll just let me have him for a short while to play with."I was across the room in two strides. My hand closed around his throat, and I lifted him off the ground by an inch, his heels kicking at the air. Damien's face turned a sickly shade of purple as his fingers came up, fumbling at my wrists. "Listen to me, you good-for-nothing piece of garbage," I snarled, my breath ghosting over his twitching features. "You talk about him one more time with that filthy tongue of yours, and I swear to every god that isn't dead I will take you apart bone by bone and feed you to the dogs in the east harbor. Do I make myself clear?""B-Blaze..." Damien choke

BLAZE.Marco's hand was still mid-air and the other lords turned their faces, their gazes skimming over Damien's pale face, then returning to me."Well?" Marco prompted, the thick gold ring on his thumb tapping against the solid wood. "The tie requires a break, Blaze. How do you vote?"Damien inhaled sharply, his eyes darting over the heavy oak table. I could see the sickly beat of his pulse in the sensitive skin of his temple. He expected it and everyone wanted me to bury him. I rested my elbows on the table, steepling my fingers together, and gave out a dry, short breath of a dismissive sound and cast my vote. "I vote to keep him."A heavy silence settled over the room, thick enough to split a tooth.Damien's mouth opened and closed several times, his expression unreadable save for the sheer disbelief in his stormy grey eyes. Marco's bushy eyebrows drew together in confusion. "Keep him? After everything you just laid out? You want to let him live?""Yes," I said, reclining in my c

BLAZE."You're on my turf, Damien," I said, my voice rich with malice as I inched closer to the drunk man's face. "You thought you could intimidate me, old man? You came into my club with four men, and I have thirty armed guards outside that door waiting for my signal."Damien's lower jaw tightened, and his eyes darted around, taking stock of the men surrounding him. "If I wanted you dead," I said, closing in until my breath fanned out against his cheek, "your body would've floated belly-up in the harbor by now. You don't have the luxury of threatening me, Damien."The man's eyes narrowed, his lips pressing into a thin line. "The annual syndicate summit takes place tomorrow night, Blaze. You won't be able to hide behind your hired thugs there. The council will hear of this."I smiled, tapping twice on his rain-soaked shoulder before shoving him back. "Now get the fuck out of my establishment."Damien's nostrils flared, his lips tightening into a straight line as he turned around and e

CHAPTER 103.*****TERRITORY WAR.BLAZE."Tell Damien to go fuck himself," I remarked into the intercom, not bothering to look up from the documents on my desk."Boss," Sergio's voice filtered through the loudspeaker, sounding tense and uncertain. "He's willing to make a compromise on the B-side shipping routes. He says it concerns the harbor slip clearances.""I don't care what the fuck he wants," I snapped, drumming my fingers on the wooden table. "Tell him no. If his face appears anywhere near my docks before sundown, I'll have his driver's head on a pike."I ended the call before Sergio could speak again. The office fell silent once more, save for the steady patter of rain on the glass. BLAZE.The young man nodded and disappeared up the steps. A minute later, the bags were in the trunk, the car's doors were shut, and I was sliding into the back seat."Drive to the estate," I said as the driver turned the wheel and pulled the car out of the driveway. The neon lights blurred past the windows as we sped down the street. The second the car came to a stop beneath the stone portico of my mansion, I wrenched the door open and climbed out. Before the driver could get around to the other side, I stormed up the front steps and through the heavy large doors. The butler came forward, bowing as soon as he saw me. "Welcome home, Master Blaze. Would you like something to drink?""Get out of my way," I hissed, shoving past the old man so hard that he stumbled backward into the wall.I climbed the grand staircase, two steps at a time, and kicked open the double doors to my study. With a practiced hand, I threw the heavy oak doors shut behind me with a resounding bang, shaking the gla
