BLAZE.

I turned my back to the balcony and pulled the thick curtain shut so that the view of the gate was blocked out.

My chest felt tight, as I walked over to my desk, sank down into the leather chair, and pulled the thick stack of harbor shipment ledgers towards me.

I flipped open a file, grabbed a pen and attempted to concentrate on the numbers scrawled across the page; but not one number seemed right.

After five minutes of writing nothing down, the intercom on my desk beeped and I hit the

BLAZE.I shoved the doctor against the wall, still gripping his collar. “Speak!”“He has a fever!” Dr. Evans gagged, his hands flying at my wrists. “It’s a severe upper respiratory infection, Master Blaze. Combined with exhaustion and severe dehydration. But he did not have a stroke; his body simply gave out under the heat.”I stared at him for a second before releasing his collar. The old man slumped against the wall, panting, rubbing his red neck.“Is he going to be alright?” I asked, catching my breath.“Y…Yes!” Dr. Evans exclaimed, fumbling with a black medical bag, tossing it on the bedside table. “I’ll leave a proper dose of fever reducers, antibiotics, and an IV pack. You can help hydrate him, reduce the fever, and let him rest. If it spikes again, call me. Please, don’t grab me like that again.”The man scribbled something down, tossing the bottles of medication on the nightstand before practically running out of the bedroom, his shoes squeaking against the floorboards as he e

I flipped open a file, grabbed a pen and attempted to concentrate on the numbers scrawled across the page; but not one number seemed right. After five minutes of writing nothing down, the intercom on my desk beeped and I hit the button. My voice came out rough as I spoke. "What?""He's still standing at the gate, boss," Sergio said in a rushed breath. "He hasn't moved an inch.""Leave him for an hour. He'll get tired of waiting and return to his little altar," I said evenly, flipping the page with a detached motion. "But, it's early morning, boss. He's been standing out there for three hours, Boss," he said, his tone cautious not to annoy me. "And he's not wearing a proper jacket for the weather.""Then he should have

MICAH.My phone lay face-up on the polished wood of my desk. I punched in his number for the fifth time since six in the morning, and held the receiver tightly against my ear.It rang four times before it went to voicemail, and it beeped loudly, making me hiss like a snake for the hundredth time. This man was after my sanity and I was letting him. I didn't leave a message, not even a single word. Instead, I ended the call and my fingers flew across the keyboard as I composed an angry message.[Are you ignoring me?]I stared at the screen, watching as the tiny little delivery notification blinked. And I got nothing, not even a typing bubble playing on the screen or an accidental reply. I swallowed the knot in my throat, and my thumb hovering over the send key as I typed out three variations of texts about my whining and deleted them all because they sounded awful. After deleting the next ten messages, I settled on one that wouldn’t hurt my pride.[If you're ignoring me because of wha

MICAH.My chest felt empty as if someone had hollowed out its insides and left me to freeze in an empty living room. I reached out for the door handle, my trembling hand itching to open the door and run after Blaze into the pouring rain."Micah, wait." Oscar's voice pierced the tense silence. I halted with my hand on the knob and turned around to face him. He had turned pale, and his arms that had folded on his chest dropped to his side. "I'm sorry," Oscar whispered, "it's my fault."Now wasn't the time for me to listen to this. I had to find Blaze. I was harsh and should have listened a bit. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I managed to ask, the doubt clear in my voice, "Is it true what he called you?"Oscared sighed and stepped closer. "It's not entirely true. I own both names.""Then why did you give me a name no one else knows?" I demanded, my voice cracking."I didn’t expect it would be bad. And I only give that name to people who are close to me. And you're my friend," he re

BLAZE.Jaden’s eyes met mine for a second and he shrugged his shoulders before responding. "Because Damien is going to tear down everything I worked hard to build," Jaden said, his voice hardening. "Damien thinks he owns the B-side territory, and sadly, he's the reigning lord. He likes having me around so long as I have those codes and manifests for the harbor shipments. But he's tearing up the city looking for them, and the minute he finds where I hid them, he'll put a bullet in my brain, then he'll come after you.""Sounds like your problem to me," I said, angling for a closer inspection. "I don't fight your battles."Jaden stepped closer, the shadow of the umbrella deepening over his pale eyes. "You're not going to have a choice, son. Damien isn't coming after your throne. He's already taken your seat."Something tight in my chest loosened, but I kept my face impassive."You think you can keep that boy safe in your hovel?" Jaden's laughter was a low, grinding sound. "Damien knows w

BLAZE.I stared at him for three long seconds. I glanced at Jeremy, whose eyes were glinting with satisfaction as he peered over Micah's shoulder. I opened my mouth to say something else but I bit my lip, turned on my heel, and left him standing there in the hallway. I marched down the short corridor, opened the front door, and stepped back out into the damp hallway. I allowed the door to slam shut behind me before I headed down the three flights of stairs, my fingers curled into tight fists at my sides. The rain was still coming down in sheets when I exited the building through the front doors, so I took a moment to glance up at the third-floor window where the dim light still burned."Fuck it," I muttered to myself.I ran to my car, climbed behind the wheel, and jammed the ignition. The car roared to life and the tires screeched as I shot out of the parking lot. I raced onto the main road, speeding down the thoroughfare when the brake lights of a car coming up fast from behind s
