Elena's POV

“I need time to think,” I finally said.

Alexander nodded, as if he had expected that response. “You have twenty-four hours.”

I blinked. “That’s not enough…”

“That’s more than enough,” he interrupted, standing from his chair. He towered over me, his presence overwhelming. “If you’re serious about helping your mother, you’ll make your decision quickly.”

Arrogant man.

But he was right about one thing, this wasn’t just about me.

I stood up from the chair, gripping the file tightly as I made my way out. Victor was waiting by the elevator, his expression unreadable as he led me back down.

As the doors closed behind me, I realized my entire life was about to change.

And I had twenty-four hours to decide if I was

willing to go through with it or not.

I held my phone in my hand, staring at Sophie’s name on the screen. I wanted to call her and tell her everything. How I ended up in a business deal with a man like Alexander Sterling. A handsome Jerk, the same one who got me fired.

But what could she do? Worry? Tell me not to do it? I already knew what she would say. “ there has to be another way.” Except there wasn’t or was there?

I sighed and locked my phone, pushing the thought away. If I told Sophie, she’d stress over it, and she had enough going on already. No, I’d carry this alone.

With a deep breath, I took a cab and decided to go about my normal day.

I was halfway to the cleaning agency when my phone rang. I glanced at the screen. Ryan.

"Ryan?" I answered quickly.

His voice was frantic. "Elena! It’s Mom. She collapsed again. We’re at the hospital, please hurry!"

My breath caught.

"I’m on my way."

I didn’t even think. I stopped the first cab I saw. My heart pounded the entire ride to the hospital, my mind racing through all the worst possibilities.

Not again. Not now.

The moment I rushed through the hospital doors, I spotted Ryan standing outside a room, his small shoulders shaking as he wiped at his eyes.

"Ryan!" I ran to him, pulling him into my arms.

"They won’t treat her, Lena," he sobbed against my shoulder. "They said we need to pay first..again."

I looked up, past my mother's motionless body. They just left her like that. Tears dropped from my eyes. I can't take this.

Doctor Owens approached me, His expression a mix of understanding and sadness. “Elena, your mum is in need of a surgery, you need to make payment so we can begin”.

“I ... .Please save her, Doctor” I was short of words. I could barely speak clearly. If I said another thing, Tears would burst from my eyes.

“I have sedated her for now, but that's all I can do. I'm sorry Elena” He said walking away. I wanted to blame him but I couldn't.

I turned to Ryan, my heart shattering at the fear in his eyes.

I had no choice.

Fifteen minutes later, I stood outside Alexander Sterling’s office, holding the file with he gave me hours ago as I tried to steady myself.

The receptionist let me in without question, and as I stepped inside, Alexander looked up from his desk, his cold, unreadable eyes locking onto mine.

"I assume you’ve made your decision," he said smoothly, setting down his pen.

I swallowed hard. My pride, my hesitation, everything that made me want to say no, it all burned away in the face of my mother’s life.

"I’ll do it," I whispered. "I’ll sign the contract."

For the first time, a hint of satisfaction appeared on his face. I hated that I was giving in to him but I had no choice. I couldn't allow my mum to die.

I dropped the file on the table. I picked up the pen but didn’t sign immediately.

"I have one condition," I said, meeting his gaze.

His brow lifted. "And what would that be?"

"My mother will be transferred to a better hospital now. Not tomorrow, not later, now. She starts treatment immediately."

Alexander leaned back in his chair, watching me carefully. Then, after a moment, he nodded. "Done."

I was filled with relief, but it didn't last. Because as soon as I signed this, my life would no longer be my own.

I took a deep breath, pressed the pen to the paper, and wrote:

Elena Carter.

Alexander took the contract, glanced at it, signed his name too then pulled out his phone.

"Victor, arrange for Elena Carter’s mother to be transferred to Sterling Hospital immediately. I want her in the VIP ward and under the best care possible."

"Yes, sir," Victor responded without hesitation.

Alexander hung up and looked at me. "It's done. She’ll be there within the hour."

Tears burned my eyes, but I forced them back. I can't show weakness in his front.

The deal was sealed. My mother would live, but at what cost?

    — ALEXANDER —I woke up at five. Not from any external disturbance. The house was quiet in the specific way of very early in the morning, that particular stillness that existed before the day had committed to itself, before the machinery of ordinary life had started its engine. I lay in the dark and looked at the ceiling and I thought about the corridor.About her face in the doorway.About *I need to think.*I had expected to feel something after saying the true thing, relief, perhaps, or the specific deflation that followed the release of pressure that had been building for a long time. What I felt instead was something more complicated. A heightened alertness. The specific, uncomfortable sensation of a man who had put something irreversible into the world and was now living in the space between having done it and knowing what it would produce. She had not said no.She had said she needed time.I was trying to understand the difference and finding it smaller than I wanted it to be a

  • CONTRACT OF FATE   Chapter 35

    — ELEANOR —I had always been a patient woman.Patience was not a virtue I had developed through practice or discipline the way lesser people developed things. It was constitutive, built into the structure of who I was the way good bone structure was built in, inherited from a mother who had understood that the most dangerous women in any room were never the loudest ones. They were the ones who waited. Who watched. Who understood that the correct moment was never the first available one but the one that produced the result you had determined in advance.I had been waiting for Elena Carter to make a mistake for six months. She had not made one. This had surprised me initially and then, after the initial surprise passed, it had interested me in the way that competent opponents interested me — not with admiration, which was a sentiment I reserved for people who had earned it within my particular taxonomy of earning, but with the focused attention of a woman recalibrating her approach.El

  • CONTRACT OF FATE   CHAPTER 34

    — ALEXANDER —The call was from the board.Specifically it was from Hargrove, the senior partner, the one whose opinion moved the other three like tides moving water, the one whose presence at Friday's dinner was the reason the dinner mattered at all. He was calling to confirm the agenda. To discuss, briefly and precisely, the parameters of what would and would not be on the table. It was a twelve minute call. I handled it with the efficiency it required and ended it and stood in the entrance hall with the phone in my hand and the silence of the house settling around me.Twelve minutes.I looked at the stairs. The light under her door was on. I could see it from where I was standing, the thin line of warm light at the base of the door at the top of the stairs, the specific evidence of a person who was present and awake and on the other side of something I had just allowed to close between us for the third time.I stood in the entrance hall for a moment. Then I went upstairs.---I sto

~ELENA~He was in the entrance hall when I got back.I did not expect him. Alexander at six PM on a Thursday was supposed to be in a boardroom or a conference call or one of the hundred other places his schedule consumed him, the places that made this mansion feel, on most evenings, like something I occupied alone with Maria and the particular silence of a very large house that was not mine.He was standing at the foot of the stairs with his jacket still on and his phone in his hand and he looked up when I came through the door and something in his face did the thing it had been doing lately. The thing I had no name for. The adjustment.I was not composed yet. That was the problem. I had been composed in the cab. I had been composed on the pavement outside the hospital. I had been composed for the entirety of the forty minute journey back across the city with my mother's rosary in my closed fist and the weight of everything she had said sitting in my chest like something I had not yet

  • CONTRACT OF FATE   Chapter 32: Smaller Every Time

    — ELENA —My mother looked smaller every time I visited.I did not know if this was real or if it was the particular cruelty of love, the way it sharpened your attention to the person you were afraid of losing until every small change became evidence of something larger. I sat beside her bed and held her hand and watched her face while she talked and I tried to simply be present rather than cataloguing. She was telling me about the nurse on the morning shift. A young woman named Patricia who had apparently very strong opinions about the correct temperature for soup and had been bringing my mother tea at exactly the right heat every morning without being asked."She reminds me of you," my mother said. "The way she moves through a room. Like she has already decided what needs doing and is simply in the process of doing it.""That sounds efficient," I said."It sounds like a woman who learned early that waiting for someone else to take care of things was not a reliable strategy." My moth

  • CONTRACT OF FATE   Chapter 31: What Pride Costs

ALEXANDER'S Pov The legal meeting lasted three hours. Three hours of careful, precise language from four people whose job was to translate threat into strategy and strategy into action. At the end of it I knew exactly what my father was doing, exactly how far along he was, and exactly how many moves I had available before the window of easy containment closed. It was not a comfortable number of moves. I sat at the head of the conference table after the lawyers filed out and looked at the city through the floor to ceiling glass and thought about my father with the specific cold clarity I had developed for thinking about him over years of practice. Reymond Sterling was not a man who acted from emotion. He had raised me to believe that emotion was the variable that undid otherwise sound strategy. He had demonstrated this repeatedly throughout my childhood by treating the people around him, including his son, as positions on a board rather than people with interior lives. He had
