HEART EYES

NOVA

By the next morning, I’ve slept exactly three hours. Just three hours. Yeah, I counted.

It's not because I tried listening to the recording again. Definitely not because of that. And absolutely not because every time I closed my eyes, I kept hearing Enzo's voice.

I sip my coffee with my eyes closed. One, two, three...

"I'm dropping you off today. Your mom went ahead to work."

I open my eyes at the sound of his voice. If it was like every other morning, I'd have a sarcastic comment waiting to be retorted. But it's not like any other morning. It's totally different. So I don't say a word as he rallies around, making his coffee.

"What's going on?" He finally glances at me after five minutes.

I shake my head. "Nothing."

"That's bullshit. Something is up. What's that?"

"It's nothing."

He raises a brow. "You're not your usual chatty, bratty self. I don't care about you but if Noah gets a hint that you're unwell, it'll affect the game tonight and..."

"I'm fine, okay! Really!" I snap.

Enzo squints his eyes at me, takes a large sip of his coffee and tilts his head. "Journalism problems?"

If he had any idea.

"Look, I don't know what the problem is but if it's Mia, you shouldn't worry too much. You always find a way to get past her. You always do."

I glance at my feet.

"You'll be fine, okay?"

I nod.

"Alright, let's go."

Give me thirty minutes to go through the ride with Enzo and my brain feels like it’s running on static as I push through the crowded halls of Ridgeview High with Ava beside me.

The building is already buzzing with playoff energy. Hockey is all this school lives for. The posters line the walls. Students crowd around lockers wearing Wolves jerseys. Someone’s blasting music from a speaker near the gym.

“You look awful,” Ava says, eyeing me.

“Thank you.” I mutter.

“You’re welcome.” she smiles.

I glare at her weakly before shifting my backpack higher on my shoulder. The second we walk into the media room, Mia Thompson looks up from her computer.

“Well, if it isn’t Ridgeview’s almost-star reporter,” she says.

"Good morning, Mia." I'm polite.

Mia flips her glossy hair over her shoulder dramatically. “Ready to lose another feature spot this week?”

I force a fake smile. “Ready to develop a personality this week?”

A few students nearby snort quietly. But then Mr. Lawson steps into the room holding a stack of papers.

“Morning, everyone,” he says. “Reminder that whoever pulls the strongest sports feature this month gets lead coverage during playoffs.”

My stomach drops instantly. Lead coverage. That’s the biggest student media opportunity of the year.

“And before anyone asks,” Mr. Lawson continues, “yes, I’m looking for originality. Real journalism. Not recycled gossip.”

His eyes briefly flick toward me. The second he disappears into his office, Ava grabs my wrist and drags me toward the back corner of the room.

“Okay,” she whispers urgently. “You need to post it.”

I nearly choke. “What?”

“You heard him. Real journalism.”

“Ava...” Last night she didn't want me to post this and now she does? It is my call to make but I'll rather not have my best friend pressurizing me to do what I do not want to do.

“No, seriously.” She lowers her voice further. “This isn’t some random rumor, Nova. A girl is pregnant.”

“I know that.”

“And Enzo’s trying to pressure her into getting rid of the baby!”

I glance around quickly to make sure nobody’s listening. I mean, this is the media room. “Keep your voice down.”

“I’m being serious.” Ava folds her arms. “Posting it could actually help her.”

I stare at her.

“She might feel trapped right now,” Ava continues. “And if this becomes public, Enzo can’t just quietly make the whole thing disappear.”

“That’s not fair.”

Her eyebrows shoot up. “Not fair?”

“You don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes!”

“And neither do you!”

The words hit hard enough to shut me up for a second.

Ava softens slightly. “Nova… listen to yourself.”

I look away immediately. “He’s not a bad person,” I mumble quietly. I'm right. Enzo is not a bad person. And she knows that too. I hate how she's making this sound.

Ava stares at me like I’ve completely lost my mind. “He literally said she should get an abortion.”

“You weren't even there. He was panicking.”

“That doesn’t magically make it okay!”

“I know that!”

A few people glance over at our raised voices. I lower mine instantly. “I know,” I repeat more quietly.

Ava exhales hard, rubbing her forehead. Then she says the one thing guaranteed to annoy me. “This is about your stupid crush on him, isn’t it?”

Heat flashes through me immediately. “What?”

“Oh my God,” she says, eyes widening. “It is.”

“It is not.”

“Nova.”

“I do not have a crush on Enzo.”

Ava gives me a look so unimpressed it’s honestly offensive.

“You’ve had heart eyes for that man since freshman year.”

“I was fourteen!”

“And?”

“And he’s basically my brother!”

“You literally stare at him like he hung the moon.”

I glare at her furiously. “I do not...”

“Oh stop lying!"

“I am not...”

“Yes, you are.” Ava steps closer, voice gentler now. “If this was anybody else on that hockey team, you would’ve published the story already.”

And there it is.

The truth I’ve been trying not to touch.

She’s right.

If this were some random player? Done.

No hesitation.

But it’s Enzo.

Enzo, who trusted me enough to speak freely in my own house.

“I can’t do that to him,” I whisper before I can stop myself.

Ava’s expression softens immediately.

“Oh, Nova.”

“I know how bad this looks, okay? I know.” My throat tightens frustratingly. “But ruining his entire future over one conversation feels… wrong.”

“What if that girl has nobody?” Ava asks quietly.

I open my mouth. Close it again. Now I'm thinking about some terrified girl sitting alone somewhere while Enzo worries about hockey scouts and draft rankings. For the first time since last night, doubt creeps in from the opposite direction. Maybe staying quiet is selfish too.

My phone buzzes suddenly against the desk. A message flashes across the screen.

NOAH:

Enzo says you're not fine.

Then another immediately after.

NOAH:

Is it Mia? You don't have to worry about her. I have some gossip.

NOVA I go completely still. For one a second, my brain refuses to process what just happened. Then I jerk away, turning my head sharply."Caleb!"My whisper comes out louder than intended. He immediately pulls back, his expression changing when he sees my face."Sorry," he whispers. "I shouldn't have done that."I stare at him in the darkness, my heart still racing for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with Noah anymore."You can't just..." I stop myself, lowering my voice when I hear movement downstairs. "What were you thinking?""I wasn't.""Clearly."A tiny, almost apologetic smile touches his face. I fold my arms across my chest, despite the fact that there's barely enough room for either of us to move."You are unbelievable trying to just kiss me.""And you're still sitting on my lap."My eyes widen. "You know it's because I have nowhere else to sit!""Fair point."I glare at him. He presses his lips together, obviously trying not to laugh."Don't laugh.""I'm not.""Yo

NOVA"Make yourself comfortable," I tell him, gesturing vaguely toward the living room couch as soon as the front door closes behind us. "I'll be right back. Just going to change."Without waiting for a response, I turn and rush up the stairs, taking them two at a time. I duck into my bedroom, kicking off my uncomfortable school shoes, pulling off my boho skirt, and changing into a casual pair of shorts and a soft tank top. I take a quick second to shake out my hair in the vanity mirror before making my way back downstairs.Caleb is lounging on the sofa when I walk back into the living room. His eyes drift up, sweeping over my warm-weather clothes, and a grin spreads across his face.I can't help the small smile that touches my own lips in return.I go over to sit in the armchair opposite him, but before my weight can settle, he pats the empty cushion right beside him on the sofa. "Come here," he says.I pause, my hand resting on the armrest of the chair. "I shouldn't...""It's just t

NOVA"That turned you on?" I laugh. It leaves my mouth before I can stop it. I don't know if it's something I should be embarrassed about. When I laugh without thinking about it, it's high pitched and really funny.Caleb doesn't seem to mind. He nods, not a single trace of amusement on his face. "Honestly? Yeah."I shake my head, a half-smile lingering on my lips as we walk side-by-side down the corridor. "Enzo is going to be so mad." I say as I think about leaving Enzo in the class and going with Caleb. It wasn't my intention to make him mad but it is what it is."Who cares?" Caleb shrugs, keeping his hands tucked loosely into his jacket pockets."I do," I tell him. I really do. And I'm saying it now so Caleb knows that whatever beef he has with my brother or Enzo, I want no part in it. He slows his pace slightly, tilting his head to look at me. "You do?""I'm not making an enemy out of him," I say, my eyes dropping to the floor tiles as we walk. I swallow against the lump in my thr

NOVAAs much as I need that hug from Ava right now, I'm so thrown off by what she says preceding it. That she's not supposed to? What the hell is that supposed to mean? "I don't..." I raise my hand, shaking my head. "I don't want that hug right now."She twists her lips, looking everywhere but at me. Her eyes are roaming around random things and she won't even look at me. "So, what do you want?" "What I want is for you to explain what you meant by that statement. You're not supposed to? I don't understand what you mean by that."Ava does a low whistle. "I don't want you to be upset about this. No hard feelings. But my mom saw the scandal." Oh no. This better not be what I think it is. I don't want to hear shit about Ava's mom thinking that I'm trash when I haven't done anything wrong at all."She warned me about you and...""I don't know what to say."Ava shrugs. "Then you don't have to say anything.""No, I think I do. I think you are the most manipulative, two-faced, bitch I've

NOVAMy mouth opens, whilst my eyes are moving, they finally settle on Bethany who's behind Caleb now. She winks at me, mouthing a 'Make sure you kiss him' before retreating and leaving me with Caleb."Um..." I glance down at my legs, breathing in a little. Sure, I like the way he's not laughing with the girl from earlier and he's with me now. But then... I don't like the way Bethany pushed me on him and now I don't have any fucking words to say. It's more like I forgot what to say. What will I possibly say to him in this moment? "Speechless?" Caleb tilts his head.I let out a nervous laugh. "Oh no. I just... My brother asked me to stay away from you." I say the one rational thing I can think of."Did he now?" Caleb doesn't look surprised one bit."Yes." I nod, while I'm still racking my brain for anything to say. Bethany said to flirt. I don't know how to fucking flirt. I'm not a flirt. Never have been."Look, we're both adults right?" Caleb asks."In Highschool." I put in. That mak

NOVAAfter what happened with my mom and Noah last night, and after the text I sent Caleb... I don't know. I'm feeling pretty good about myself this morning. I'm not even fucking joking. I fucking devoured the avocado toast mom made me for breakfast and I'm actually humming my head right now to a rap music blasting through mom's speaker in her car."You feeling good baby?" Mom looks at me. Her smile is infectious. I return it with mine, nodding my head and moving my leg to the beat of the song."That's what I'm talking about. You should feel this good everyday. I like the energy today. Anything different?" I don't know if I should tell her or not. I basically don't tell my mom everything, but I do tell her some basic things that I feel she's supposed to know. Like this. I'm sure she'd be super excited for me. I just... I just don't trust her enough to keep it from Noah and Enzo or Dad. Emphasis on my father. He detests extracurriculars and would make me change schools if he knew abo
