NOVA

“What do I have to do?” I ask, my voice barely carrying over the rustle of the wind.

Enzo’s head tilts back slightly, a dark laugh slipping past his lips. He shakes his head slowly, looking at me like I’ve just confirmed his worst suspicions.

“Damn. So fast.” He scoffs, rubbing a hand over his jaw. “You don't even hesitate, do you? You just keep giving me reasons why I shouldn't trust you.”

“Enzo, I'm just trying to understand...”

“Get in the car.”

He gets into the driver’s seat and slams his door before I can say another word. I pull open the passenger side, sliding into the cold seat and dragging my hemline down as far as it will stretch, which isn't very far at all. The engine turns over with a heavy roar, and within seconds, we’re pulling away from the curb.

The ride is quiet. Enzo keeps both hands locked on the wheel at ten and two, his eyes fixed dead ahead on the dark asphalt. The silence between us feels heavier than any argument. I press my knees together, staring out the window as familiar streetlights blur past.

Gradually, the scenery starts to click into place. We’re driving right past our high school, cutting down the long strip of boulevard I’ve traveled hundreds of times. My heart does a quick stutter as we pass the plaza where my parent’s shop sits wrapped in nighttime shadow. I know this entire neighborhood like the back of my hand, every turn and alleyway second nature to me... which only makes the sudden right turn Enzo takes onto a dark, winding residential road all the more jarring.

We roll past a line of sprawling estates before he finally pulls the car onto the grass shoulder in front of an unfamiliar, two-story house with amber light spilling from every window.

He kills the ignition. The quiet is instantly replaced by a low, rhythmic thump.

“Is this where the party is holding?” I ask, my hand trembling slightly as I reach for my seatbelt release.

“Yes,” Enzo says curtly. He doesn't wait for me. He clicks his belt off, steps out into the night, and rounds the car.

I scramble out after him, the pavement cold beneath my heels as I try to match his long, aggressive strides up the front walkway. The music gets louder with every step, the heavy bass rattling the porch steps as we reach the front door. Enzo doesn't bother ringing the bell. he just knocks three times against the dark wood.

The door swings open, revealing two older guys holding red plastic cups. Their eyes drift down from my face, taking in the razor-thin straps, the plunging neckline, and the fishnets, lingering way too long before finally rising to look at Enzo.

“She’s with me,” Enzo says, his voice flat and warning.

The guy at the door smirks, stepping back and swinging the door wide. “Whatever you say, man. Go on in.”

We step into the crowded foyer. Enzo doesn't take off his jacket, he turns to me, pointing toward a low leather couch in the corner of the main sitting room.

“Sit there,” he orders. "Wait for me.”

“Enzo, wait...”

Before I can ask where he’s going, he’s already disappearing into the crowd toward the hallway near the back of the house.

I swallow hard, feeling the sting of a dozen eyes tracking my movement as I pick my way across the room. I sit down stiffly on the edge of the leather sofa, pulling my knees toward my chest and awkwardly resting my arms over my lap to cover as much bare skin as possible. Every second feels like an eternity.

I haven't been sitting there for more than two minutes when the couch cushions sink beside me.

“Hey there,” a guy with ruffled brown hair says, leaning in. He’s holding a fresh cup in his hand and grinning at me with lazy eyes. “Haven't seen you around before. You look... incredible. Can I get you a drink?”

“No, thank you,” I say, pressing myself further into the corner of the sofa. “I’m good.”

“Come on, just a beer? Or something sweet?” He shifts closer, resting an arm along the back of the couch right behind my shoulders. “You look like you're having a terrible time. Let me fix that.”

“I said I’m fine,” I repeat. "I’m waiting for someone.”

“Oh, yeah? Who...”

“Fuck off, Leo,” a female voice cuts through the music.

A familiar girl steps around the glass coffee table, crossing her arms as she glares down at him. Bethany. She’s wearing a fitted denim jacket over a lace top. My first question is... what is she doing here?

Leo rolls his eyes, holding up his hands in mock surrender. “Relax, Bethany. Just being friendly.” He stands up, sloshing a bit of his drink over the edge, and wanders back toward the kitchen.

Bethany turns to me, her eyes sweeping over my tight ponytail, the tiny black dress, and the fishnets, a slow, knowing smile spreading across her face.

“What are you doing here?” she asks, taking the spot Leo just vacated.

I let out a breath. “Bethany. Hi.”

“Word around the front door is you came with a date,” Bethany says, leaning back and resting her chin on her hand. “And that word says it’s Enzo. You two hooking up now?”

“Eww, no!” I blurt out. “No way. Absolutely not.”

Bethany laughs, rolling her eyes. “Oh, please do. Honestly, it’s what all the girls want to see. The golden boy finally taking a fall.”

“Please, leave Enzo out of this,” I plead. “It’s not like that. I got a guy... I know I can get him. Everything is just... complicated right now.”

Bethany’s smile falters, her brows drawing together as she looks at me like I’ve lost my mind.

“No,” Bethany says. “Enzo.”

Honestly, at this point, I'll take whatever is available. My brother is exhausting and I can vouch that the kitchen will provide me a temporary escape for the next couple of minutes.I pull out the ingredients for my meal and set them on the counter, grabbing a chopping board and a knife.Chop. Chop. Chop.Maybe if I focus on the vegetables, I'll stop thinking about everything else.Fat chance.I hear footsteps behind me, and a moment later, Enzo's reflection appears in the doorway. I glance at him before letting out a sigh."Don't be mad at him." He says, folding his arms.I turn back to the chopping board. "I'm not mad at him.""Nova."I take a breath. "I said I'm not."He leans against the kitchen doorway, crossing his arms over his chest.I give him a look. "Okay, fine. Maybe I am a little mad at him.""Why?""You know why. NOVAI trace the grain of the wooden coffee table with the tip of my finger. The anger that flared in my chest a moment ago is slowly being replaced by a cold, sinking feeling."If she sends it," I say quietly, not looking up, "it won't just be between you and me, Enzo. If she sends it to Noah... or to my parents...""I know," he interrupts. "I've already thought about that. Believe me, it's all I've been thinking about since I walked out of that room.""And?" I finally look at him. "And I'll deal with it," he says, his jaw clenching. "If she sends it to your brother, I'll take whatever he has to dish out. I'll take a punch, I'll take a broken nose... hell, I'll take whatever he wants. But I am not going to let her ruin my promise to you. I am not going to let her dictate who I talk to, who I care about, or what I do with my life."Well, I should take his word. He does sound sincere. Oh God. It’s terrifying how easily he can make me believe him, even when I'm not supposed to, given t

ENZOI storm out of the living room before I do something I'll regret. Something like smashing every fucking thing in this house. My mother's laughter follows me to the stairs."Don't forget to thank me when you're playing in the NHL, Lorenzo!"I flip her off without turning around."Such a lovely gesture!" she calls after me.God, I fucking hate her. I make it halfway up the stairs before the realization of what just happened hit me. I squeeze my eyes shut.Okay... I'm not seriously worried about what her reaction would be right? That's fucking right. I'm worried about what her brother's reaction would be when he listens to that recording. I practically tore his sister apart with every disgusting word. But then... I'd said those things to protect her, right? To make my mother believe there was nothing between us. And now my mother has a recording. A fucking recording.I pull my phone from my pocket and open Nova's contact. My thumb hovers over the call button. What am I supposed to

ENZO“No, you listen to me, you miserable...”I bite my tongue hard, my chest heaving like I’ve just played three consecutive periods of brutal overtime. I can’t do this here. Not with her standing in the entryway looking at me like I’m a malfunctioning machine.I turn on my heel, shoving past her, and storm up the stairs two at a time, leaving her screeching complaints against the walls.Once I hit the second-floor landing, I pull my phone out of my pocket, my thumb swiping. I can still remember what I told Nova downstairs. What we were going to do before my mother arrived unannounced. I open a browser tab. How to be good to her?A bunch of sappy, useless relationship blog links pop up. I stare at the screen, let out a scoff at some generic advice about "active listening and emotional availability," and delete the search. I try again. How to be a boyfriend.I scroll through a few more articles until one headline actually makes me snort. Signs you're failing as a boyfriend. Yeah, well

ENZOWhat is she doing here? That's what I think first when I sight my mother glaring at Nova. It's nothing new. It's been established that she doesn't like Nova. She doesn't care much for Noah but Nova... we all know she dislikes the girl. Then after the recording stuff... her hatred for the girl grew.My mother’s eyes... icy, and sharp, takes in the scene. First, they land on me, holding Nova’s hand tightly in mine. Then her gaze drags over to Nova. She takes in her damp hair, and the plain black shirt swallowing her frame... my shirt.I feel Nova flinch beside me, as she tries to yank her fingers out of my grip. Panic. She’s terrified. I don't let go immediately she tries to get her hand off. I tighten my grip, letting her know I’ve got her, before letting my fingers slide away."Mom," I say, stepping between them. I square my shoulders, blocking Nova from my mother's line of sight. "You said you weren't coming back until Sunday.""Evidently, I came home early," she replies. She do

NOVA The sun is scorching, shimmering, but that is the last thing on my mind.My palms are slick with sweat. My stomach is doing dangerous, acrobatic flips. And my brain? My brain has left me completely, leaving behind a mess.Yeah, I'm a mess. I'm a panicking mess.We haven't spoken since last night. Not a text. Not a glance across the hall at school. Nothing.I wouldn't even be standing here right now if Noah hadn't literally cornered me against my locker during fourth period, pinning me with his protective older brother glare and telling me, “Go see Enzo after school.”Easy for him to say. He didn't make a life-altering, utterly terrifying deal with his best friend to pretend to be a couple while secretly harboring feelings.I stand on the front porch of Enzo’s house, staring at the brass doorbell as if it's a venomous snake. I've been standing here for approximately five full minutes, my inner monologue screaming every possible worst-case scenario. What if his parents are home? T
