Chapter 3

Author: Sleepyhead
Wendy's POV

Colin stepped forward and grabbed my wrist, his grip painfully tight.

"Wendy, what's with this attitude?" he demanded, his voice heavy with irritation.

"Just sorting through some old junk and getting rid of it," I replied coldly.

I tried to pull my hand free, but his grip only tightened.

Simon visibly relaxed.

A moment later, he pouted and complained, "Mom! You're no fun! You were the one who agreed to let Ava come with me. So why are you giving everyone such an attitude now?"

Ava stepped forward right on cue, her face a perfect mix of concern and innocence.

"Wendy, are you upset with me? I was just helping out as a friend and keeping Simon company..."

As usual, she used the word "friend" to justify everything she did, as if it were some kind of universal shield.

Everyone turned a blind eye, silently giving her permission to cross every boundary imaginable.

Yet whenever I questioned her, I was immediately accused of making a scene and dismissed as someone who didn't understand how high society worked.

But this time, I wasn't going to play along.

I yanked my wrist free from Colin's grasp, a faint, cold smile tugging at the corners of my lips.

"Ms. Levine, you're overthinking it," I said smoothly. "You love helping people take care of their children so much that you even volunteer to stand in for their mothers at sports days. If anything, I should be thanking you."

The air in the room froze.

Simon bristled with anger. "Mom! How can you say something like that?" he shrieked.

Colin's expression darkened.

"Wendy Sinclair! Watch your mouth and remember your place!" he warned. "Ava was only trying to help. Is this how you treat a guest?"

Ava's eyes welled up with tears right on cue, making her look pitiful and completely helpless.

Simon lost all restraint and screamed at me, "It's no wonder my younger brother and sister died before they were born! They must not have wanted a terrible mother like you!"

The blood in my veins seemed to freeze, and a bone-chilling cold swept through my limbs.

So, they were capable of standing up for someone after all. It was just never for me.

The doctor's words echoed in my mind.

"Your miscarriage was caused by your body never fully recovering after you gave birth to Simon, combined with years of emotional strain and depression..."

And now, my own son spat such vicious words at me, all for the sake of another woman.

Colin snapped, "Simon!"

Then, he turned to me, his voice slipping into that familiar, dismissive tone he always used to smooth things over.

"He's just a child. Don't take it to heart."

Just a child? Was that all it took to brush aside all the hurt he'd caused?

Just then, Colin's gaze drifted past me to the pile of expensive clothes I'd cleared out and dumped in the living room like trash. His eyes then fell on the half-empty closet.

For the first time, genuine shock flickered across his face.

Ava followed his gaze and immediately caught on.

"Mr. Fraser, please don't blame Wendy," she said, feigning concern. "No wonder she was willing to let me come along to the sports day today. She must have wanted to clear out her old things to make room for all the new things you're going to buy her."

At her words, the doubt on Colin's face vanished, replaced by a smug look of certainty.

This was the Wendy he knew—the woman who spent her life chasing material possessions, using luxury goods to fill the emptiness inside her.

Without a second thought, he pulled out his phone and called his assistant, Ethan Carter.

"Send over a complete set of this season's new arrivals," he ordered smoothly before hanging up.

Then he turned to me, his expression calm and indifferent, as though he were doing a favor for someone beneath him.

"There," he said. "Are you happy now?"

Wendy's POVDuring the awards ceremony's after-party, I met Henry Grant. He was a brilliant architect with a rather stubborn streak. We got into a heated argument over the design concept for a public space, and neither of us was willing to back down."Ms. Sinclair, your idea is far too idealistic. It's structurally impossible!" He frowned, his tone firm."You're the one whose thinking is constrained by convention, Mr. Grant!" I fired back without hesitation. The others watched us in shock, thinking that we'd become mortal enemies. However, it was precisely through these clashes of opposing ideas that we unexpectedly discovered the same passion and dedication to our craft deep within each other's souls. Our arguments turned into in-depth discussions, and our differences became sparks of inspiration.Henry admired my boldness and creativity, while I respected his rigor and ingenuity. From professionals with opposing ideas, we gradually became kindred spirits who understood each ot

Wendy's POVAfter three years, I reached my first significant milestone as a fashion designer in Eunovia. My collection, which I'd named Shattered and Reborn, was shortlisted for one of the industry's most prestigious international awards for emerging designers. The inspiration behind the collection came from my experiences throughout those seven arduous years and my eventual escape. It featured extensive use of torn fabrics that had been painstakingly stitched back together with gold thread, symbolizing destruction and rebirth. The colors gradually shifted from dark, oppressive shades to bright, warm hues, reflecting the state of mind I'd finally achieved. On the day of the finals, I stood beneath the spotlight. Looking out at the fellow designers and audience members from around the world, I felt a strange sense of calm."This collection was inspired by a chapter of my life." My voice passed through the microphone and rang out across the venue. "I once believed my worth lay in b

Wendy's POVThat evening, I flew back out of the country. I accepted an offer from a fashion house in Eunovia. No one here knew my past. My colleagues only cared about my creativity and complimented me for it. For the first time, my worth had nothing to do with being Mrs. Fraser. My new apartment was small, but it got plenty of sunlight. I kept a few potted plants by the window. On weekends, I'd hunt for secondhand treasures at the local markets or sling my easel over my shoulder and head to the river to paint.Life was simple, but my days were filled with the reassuring feeling of being in full control of my own fate.I thought my farewell at the cemetery had been the end of it. However, one evening, when I returned to my apartment building with fresh flowers and groceries, I spotted two familiar figures.Colin was dressed in a casual suit. Simon, who was holding his hand, looked at me timidly and called out, "Hi, Mom."After stepping forward, Colin said in an unusually low an

Colin marched forward and grabbed my wrist, his grip shockingly strong."Where have you been for the past three months? Do you have any idea—"His words cut off abruptly. Perhaps it was because of how calm my gaze was. He swallowed hard, an inexplicable panic churning in his eyes.Suddenly, he yanked me into his arms, hugging me so tightly that I could barely move."Come back..." His voice trembled almost imperceptibly. At almost the same moment, Simon burst into tears and rushed over to wrap his arms around my legs."Why did you leave me, Mom? I missed you so much..."Once, these tearful words and desperate embrace would have melted my heart in an instant. Now, they only filled me with a profound sense of exhaustion.Slowly but firmly, I pushed Colin away. Then I crouched down and calmly looked at Simon, who was bawling his eyes out."Simon," I said, my voice devoid of emotion. "You have Ava now. You like her more, and she's better than me in every way, isn't she?"Simon fro
