Chapter 2

Author: Space Milk
I clenched my hands in terror and braced myself against the bed, trying to stand.

But I couldn't move Reese at all. I frowned and pushed against his iron-hard chest, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Alpha Reese, your mate will misunderstand! Please let me go!"

His gaze was cold and sharp, and his breath was heavy with the strong scent of liquor—the signature brew of the Shadow pack.

His hand gripped my wrist so tightly that it felt like he was trying to crush my bones.

"After all these years, I still can't figure it out." His voice was hoarse, laced with endless resentment. "Why did you betray me when I was dying from wolfbane poisoning and run straight into Caleb Chapman's arms?"

The sound of running water in the bathroom stopped, and I felt my heart leap into my throat.

But Reese didn't move, fixing his obsidian eyes intently on me. It was as if he was trying to see straight through my soul.

"Answer me," he demanded.

My heartbeat grew chaotic under the weight of his stare. My throat bobbed nervously, but I remained silent.

He was a skilled hunter, patient enough to wait for my defenses to crumble.

The two of us remained at a standoff until I heard the doorknob turning.

In a panic, I opened my mouth and bit down hard on his muscular arm. I used all my strength until I tasted the iron of blood in my mouth.

Reese frowned and let out a muffled grunt, loosening his grip on me.

I seized the chance to push him away, grabbed the dirty sheets off the floor, and fled.

The moment the door closed behind me, Tiffany's whiny, coy voice drifted faintly through.

"Darling, please stop asking them to change the sheets. The healers will think I'm too picky."

I didn't hear Reese's reply to Tiffany's request.

As I walked down the hushed clinic hallway, I leaned against the cold wall and gasped for air, waiting for my racing heart to slow down.

It wasn't that I had never imagined what it would be like to see him again one day. But what I hadn't expected was that after three years, his hatred for me would run this deep.

Unfortunately, there were some answers I couldn't give him. There were also some truths I didn't want him to know.

If our encounters were destined to bind us in endless turmoil, then it would be better never to meet again at all.

Back at the front desk, Kelly leaned in again. "Elara, do you know who that patient is?"

It was late into the night, and I was tired, so I didn't speak. I just mechanically sorted through the medical records.

But Kelly grew more excited as she spoke, as if she had discovered something new. "He's actually the Alpha of the Silverclaw pack!"

I said flatly, "Snooping into guest information violates the confidentiality agreement."

"I was just curious!"

Kelly pursed her lips and lowered her voice, her eyes sparkling with gossip. "Have you heard about that power struggle in the Silverclaw pack three years ago?

"Alpha Reese was hit with a high concentration of wolfbane at a critical moment, and his wolf was on the verge of disappearing. I heard he had a fated mate back then, but she actually cheated on him when he was at his lowest."

Kelly shook her fist. "He almost didn't make it! And now, all werewolves are cursing that she-wolf. She's utterly heartless!"

My fingers unconsciously tightened around the pen I was holding, and memories from the past came flooding back.

"She must be regretting it so much now. The Luna position she had in her hands was gone just like that," Kelly continued.

Her grating voice buzzed in my ears like an annoying fly that wouldn't leave.

"Oh, and I haven't told you the craziest part. Do you know who she cheated with?"

"Yes. I know," I said softly.

Kelly raised her voice slightly, looking at me in surprise. "You do? Since when do you read gossip tabloids?"

I couldn't help but think it felt extra cold in the second half of the night.

I slowly turned my head and looked calmly at Kelly's astonished expression. I wanted to force a smile and pretend to sound casual and lighthearted, but I couldn't hide the tremor in my voice.

"I'm his fated mate who cheated."

Kelly's expression froze instantly, and her mouth hung wide open. It took her a long time to come back to her senses.

I lowered my head, intending to go back to the work I hadn't finished. But I couldn't read a single word of the densely packed text in front of me.

That sentence seemed to unlock all my old memories, which flooded back and filled my mind completely.

When I woke up again, I almost thought I had arrived in heaven. Everything around me was white, and the air carried a faint scent of moonlit flowers."You're awake? You're awake! Healer!" A familiar voice exploded near my ear, trembling with a choked, tearful tone.I struggled to open my eyes and saw a scruffy, haggard face staring back at me. It was Reese. He had lost a lot of weight, and his eyes were sunken. He looked even weaker than I, the patient. When he saw me open my eyes, the once arrogant Alpha buried his face in my palm and started bawling like a pup."I'm sorry… I'm so sorry, Elara…"I tried to pull my hand back, but I had no strength at all. "You know… everything?"While looking at him weakly, I gently wiped the tears from his face with my fingers."I'd almost rather you had actually abandoned me…" he mumbled."What nonsense are you talking about?" I frowned, displeased. There was no way I could have abandoned him.Reese lifted his head suddenly, roughly wiped h

Reese saw that rainy night three years ago, of me kneeling at Caleb's feet and begging him through my tears."Please, save Reese!"With a cruel smile on his face, Caleb held a vial of his own blood in his hand. "Of course I can, but I need something in return."Without hesitation, I looked up and said, "I'll do anything. Whatever it takes. Just save him!""Give me your wolf essence, and I'll give you the blood."In the memory, I nodded immediately. Then came the excruciating pain of my wolf essence being ripped out of my body.I collapsed to the ground in an instant, yet I still held tightly onto the antidote with a faint smile on my lips."Reese, wait for me…"The memory cut off there.Reese rolled off me, looking as though he had been struck by lightning. He collapsed beside the bed, his face as pale as a sheet and his entire body shaking violently."I don't… That's impossible…"He looked at me as I lay unconscious, at my pale face and the bruises scattered across my body.

I looked at Reese in disbelief. "What did you say?""Since you're a healer, isn't this your job?" He started the car and laughed coldly. "I'll pay you ten times the market rate."I had no right to refuse him.…The next day, after signing a contract that was practically an indentured servitude, I was taken to Reese's private villa. It wasn't the cozy little home we had once shared, the one full of warm memories, but a mansion halfway up the mountain. My room, dark and damp, was placed next to the maids' quarters.Of course, Tiffany was the true mistress of the house. She seemed to notice Reese's special attention toward me, and she tormented me all the more."Elara, I twisted my ankle. Massage it.""Elara, I want cold spring water collected from the snowy peaks.""Elara, who gave you permission to stand in front of me? Kneel when you speak to me!"When I thought of the innocent colleagues at the clinic, I endured it all in silence. But what hurt me most wasn't Tiffany's tor

I gritted my teeth and was forced to follow Reese. The sound of an elegant violin filled the restaurant. Every guest here was dressed in fine clothes, exuding the air of those in power.Dressed in my cheap T-shirt and faded jeans, I was pressed into a window seat by Reese, while the waiter looked on with clear contempt. He ordered an expensive table full of dishes that I used to love—medium-rare steak, truffle mushroom soup, and a bottle of wine with a good vintage. But I couldn't eat a single bite."You betrayed me for money, so you should be thrilled to face all these things you couldn't afford before."Reese swirled his wine glass, watching me with amusement. "Eat. Why aren't you eating? Did Caleb spoil your tastes?"It was the same man, in the same place, and with the same dishes, but everything was different now.I picked up my knife and fork and mechanically cut into the meat on my plate. It tasted like nothing to me.Just then, a commotion broke out at the restaurant's

I froze, lowering my head in guilt.Reese looked at Tiffany and finally spoke up to stop the farce. "Enough. Pick out a new jewelry set you like tomorrow. Stop making a scene."He then dismissed Peter and Tiffany, but kept me behind. The room suddenly fell quiet, with the only sound being the ticking of the clock on the wall. The two of us stood in silence. In the earlier struggle, a shard from the broken wooden carving had flown up and cut my calf. Small beads of blood were already seeping through. The scent of blood hung in the air.Reese's gaze fell on the wound. For a moment, something that looked like concern flickered in his eyes, but it vanished in an instant.I told myself it must have been my imagination.I crouched down and gathered the scattered items from the floor, placing them back into my bag one by one. Finally, I picked up the two broken halves of the wooden wolf and wrapped them carefully in a tissue.Reese's expensive, bespoke leather shoes came to a halt in

  • Can't Slip From His Grip   Chapter 3

Meeting Reese was the most unexpected accident of my life. Back then, I was still a healer's apprentice in a small pack.I was at the market when I saw a Rogue harassing an Omega she-wolf. I stepped in, subdued him, and turned him over to the law enforcement. At that time, Reese was still just the heir to the Silverclaw pack, young and full of confidence. He followed me for a while, intrigued. And that was how our paths crossed. The day he confessed to me was in a meadow full of moonlit flowers. I asked him why he liked me. After all, I was just an ordinary healer with no noble bloodline.Reese just took my hand and placed it over his heart, allowing me to feel its strong, steady beat."Because you're kind, brave, and smart. But more than that, because my wolf chose you."Maybe it was his pleasant scent drawing me in—or perhaps it was an unconscious flutter of my heart—but whatever it was, we were together for a long time after that. That was until Reese's father, the previous
