The co-captain announcement spread through the team like wildfire. By the next practice, guys were slapping me on the back, calling me “Co-Cap” in the halls. It should’ve felt like victory but Instead, it felt like a lit fuse.

Jax didn’t say a word during warm-ups. He just skated harder, faster, his checks on me turning vicious. One particularly hard hit sent me crashing into the boards. Pain exploded in my shoulder as I hit the ice.

“Watch it, Rivera!” Coach yelled.

Jax offered a hand, yanking me up with a bruising grip. “Oops,” he muttered under his breath. “Co-captains need to be tougher than that.”

His eyes promised punishment later.

After practice, I stayed in the locker room, changing slowly. Tyler came and sat onto the bench beside me, towel around his neck.

“You killed it out there today, man. That assist in the last drill? Chef’s kiss.” He grinned, shoulder bumping mine playfully. “We should grab food after the Ridgeview rematch to celebrate properly. Just you and me.”

I froze as my gaze fell on Tyler’s lips as he bite them. I scanned him secretly, he was good-looking, tall, always smiling, and cracking jokes. He was so harmless and the way he looked at me felt like he was interested in me.

Before I could answer, Jax appeared behind us, voice like ice. “Team dinner is mandatory. No side plans.”

Tyler raised an eyebrow. “Chill, Captain. Just offering moral support to the new guy.”

Jax’s stare could’ve frozen the rink. “He doesn’t need it.”

The tension was thick enough to choke the locker room. Tyler shrugged and left, but not before shooting me a confused, slightly hopeful look.

I knew I was in big trouble and I’d pay for that later.

That night, Jax’s text was short and commanding.

Jax: My place. Now.

I went there quickly. The second the door closed after me, he had me pinned against it, collar already in his hand.

“You let him flirt with you?” Jax buckled the leather around my throat, tugging the leash hard enough to make me stumble forward. “In front of the whole fucking team?”

“He was just being friendly…”

“Friendly?” Jax laughed, hard and dragged me to the bedroom and shoved me onto the bed. “Strip. Hands and knees.”

I obeyed, heart pounding. He pushed me open roughly with lubed fingers, then pushed in the thick plug he’d used before but it was bigger this time. The stretch burned my asshole.

“You’re mine,” he growled, spanking my ass hard.“Not Tyler’s. Not anyone’s. Say it.”

“I’m yours, Sir.”

He fucked me with the plug still in, alternating brutal thrusts and twisting the toy until I was sobbing into the sheets. Every time I got close, he stopped and rather went edging me for what felt like hours while he whispered threats.

“Maybe I should invite Tyler to watch. Show him exactly what kind of co-captain you are. You're collared and begging for my cock.”

Jealousy had turned him feral. He finally let me come only after I was shaking and in a broken mess, then he filled me again, marking me inside and out.

Afterward, as I lay there catching my breath, his phone lit up on the nightstand. A message preview flashed.

Unknown: Hey Jax, heard your new co-cap is that transfer kid Ethan. Tell him I said hi, we go way back.

Jax snatched the phone before I could read more, but his face darkened further.

“Who’s that?” I asked quietly.

“None of your business.” But his grip on the leash tightened. “Ridgeview’s star forward Marcus. He’s been texting me shit about you since the last game. Says he remembers you from your old school and he wants  a rematch off the ice too.”

He's been threatening me.

Marcus was a cocky asshole I’d clashed with before. He is huge, aggressive, and openly into guys. He is the kind who didn’t take no for an answer.

Jax’s voice dropped dangerously. “If he touches you, I’ll end him and then  I’ll punish you for letting him get close.”

The next two days were hell. Marcus showed up early at the arena for the rematch, “scouting” our practice. He leaned on the boards, eyes locked on me the whole time.

“Looking good, Kane!” he shouted during a water break. “Captain looks even better on you than it did on Rivera. Come find me after the game if you want a real winner.”

Jax nearly lost it on the ice. His body brushed over Marcus during warm-ups so hard the refs warned him.

In the locker room before the game, Jax cornered me alone. “You stay away from him or I swear I’ll drag you into the showers and fuck you raw where the whole team can hear.”

The threat sent a twisted thrill through me. But the jealousy was eating him alive and it was only making him more possessive, cruel and more addictive.

We won the game. I scored the tying goal. Marcus scored the winner for them. As we shook hands after, he held my grip too long, leaning in.

“Call me,” he whispered. “I can treat you better than that control freak.”

Jax saw it. His eyes burned with pure rage.

That night, after the team celebration, Jax didn’t text. He showed up at my dorm unannounced, storming in and slamming the door.

“On your knees now.” he commanded.

The punishment was the hardest , he used his belt, rope on me. He asked me questions about Marcus, after hours of denial, he used me until I was hoarse from begging then he made me repeat that I belonged to him, and that Marcus meant nothing.

Finally, he came inside me hot, then afterwards he held me sweat-slick and breathing hard, something cracked in his voice.

“I hate how much I need this,” he admitted, almost too quiet to hear. “You were supposed to be just a toy but now look at us.”

For a second, the old Jax just flashed through. The friend I was missing but then quickly the mask slammed back down.

“Tomorrow’s team bonding. Stay away from Tyler and Marcus better not show his face again.”

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. A new message.

Marcus: Got pics from the game. You and Rivera look real close, it's quite interesting don't you think we should talk?.

Under the message something was attached, a blurry photo of Jax pinning me against the boards during practice. We looked too intimate to be normal.

Jax had been awake since before sunrise. The phone sat on the nightstand face-up, screen dark, but he kept reaching for it every few minutes anyway. The message he never meant to send was still sitting there, delivered and unanswered. Gerald appeared in the doorway with two mugs. He set one on the table near the bed and stayed standing. “You’ve checked that phone six times since I came upstairs,” he said. “What’s going on?” Jax didn’t look at him. “Nothing.” “Try again.” Jax’s jaw flexed. He picked up the phone, locked it, then unlocked it again like the action might change something. “I sent Ethan a message last night.” Gerald raised an eyebrow. “On purpose?” “No.” Jax’s voice was tight. “I typed it, deleted it. Went downstairs for water and when I came back it was sent.” “What did it say?” Jax hesitated, then muttered, “I asked about his leg, properly. Not the surface version.” Gerald was quiet for a second. “And?” “He hasn’t answered.” Before Gerald could rep

Gerald parked in the usual spot and turned off the engine. Jax sat still for a few seconds longer than necessary, staring at the rink entrance.“Yesterday was just a short visit,” Gerald said. “Today is the full session. You’re here for the entire practice. You sit where the coach told you and you stay quiet unless someone speaks to you first. Clear?”Jax pushed the door open carefully. “Clear.”Inside, the sound of skates cutting ice hit him at the same time. Coach was already on the bench side of the boards. When he saw them, he gave a short nod.“Rivera, glad you made it. Designated area is the second row behind the home bench. Stay there for the full session. No walking the boards, no calling out, no stepping onto the ice. Understood?”“Yes, Coach.”That was all. Coach turned back to the ice without another word.Gerald led Jax to the seats. A few teammates noticed him as they skated past during warm-ups. One of the defensemen gave a small nod. Another raised a gloved hand briefly

The silence from the night before still hung in the apartment the next morning. Jax had barely slept. He sat on the edge of the bed in the same position Gerald had left him with his phone face-down beside him, the unsent message about Ethan’s leg still sitting in the drafts.Gerald appeared in the doorway, already dressed with the car keys in hand.“Get up. We have an appointment.”Jax looked at him. “What appointment?”“Follow-up with the doctor. Concussion and ribs. I scheduled it yesterday while you were staring at your phone. We’re going.”Jax didn’t move right away. The weight of the previous night’s conversation still pressed on him—Gerald’s words about control, about not knowing how to love because he didn’t know how to care for himself, about Tyler stepping into the empty space. He had no argument left that didn’t sound like an excuse.“I don’t need another lecture from a doctor,” he muttered.“This isn’t a lecture. It’s clearance or the lack of it. Either way, you’re going.”

The next day in the morning Gerald’s phone rang while he was in the kitchen. He glanced at the screen, then answered.“Coach.”“Gerald,How is he?”“Awake, but still in pain and he's restless but stable. His ribs are the main issue right now, his concussion symptoms have mostly settled.”“Good.” The coach’s voice was flat, businesslike. “I need you to hear this clearly. His spot on the team is not guaranteed. Full medical clearance is the minimum after that he comes back on probation. No captaincy or special treatment. He follows every instruction I give him or he sits permanently, if it comes to that.”Gerald leaned against the counter. “I understand.”“I’m not sure he does. The suspension happened for a reason. The material that got out those videos and pictures put the whole team under scrutiny. I suspended both of them because the relationship was affecting performance and discipline. Ethan took the conditions seriously. He showed up, did the extra work, kept his mouth shut, and ea

Jax sat on the couch with a pillow behind his back and another under his arm to keep pressure off the ribs. The bandage around his middle felt tight every time he breathed. His head still throbbed in a low, steady pulse.Gerald dropped a small pharmacy bag on the coffee table and sat on the edge of the opposite chair.“Listen carefully,” he said. “You’re here for the next ten days at least. Medication every six hours. Ice the ribs three times a day. No alcohol, no driving and no disappearing in the middle of the night. You need something, you tell me. You feel worse, you tell me. Clear?”Jax’s jaw tightened. “I can take care of myself.”“That’s what you said before you ended up on a bar floor with your face split open.”“I didn’t ask to come here.”“No, you didn’t but I decided for you because the alternative was you going back to that empty apartment and doing something even dumber.”Jax looked away. “You’re acting like I’m some kind of project.”“I’m acting like someone who got a ca

Jax’s cousin shoved the bar door open hard enough that it slammed against the wall. The place still smelled of spilled beer, blood, and cheap cologne. Security was herding the last of the troublemakers out the back while the bartender wiped down a sticky table with a stained rag.“Where is he?” the cousin demanded. The bartender jerked his chin toward the far corner. “Over there. We pulled the other guys off him, but he took a beating. Are you his family?”The cousin didn’t answer because he was already moving.Jax was half-sitting against the wall, one leg stretched out, the other bent. Blood had dried in a dark line from his split lip down his chin with one eye swollen and nearly shut. His breath was slow and shallow, like every inhale hurt.“Jesus Christ, Jax.” The cousin dropped to his knees in front of him. “What the hell did you do?”Jax’s good eye cracked open. His voice was rough, almost slurred. “Didn’t… start it.”“Doesn’t look like you finished it either.” The cousin’s hand
