Elara’s wrist throbbed. The silver mark had bled into crimson, pulsing in time with the flutter of life in her belly. Three weeks since Kael’s death, and the den breathed easier—too easy.

“Your scent’s turned sweet,” he said, nuzzling her neck as she paged through Eleanor’s journal. His fingers brushed the new crimson wolf’s head etched into her skin. “Ripe. Like the berries in the eastern glade.”

She shivered, closing the journal. “My dreams are screaming. Fire. Blood. A woman begging—”

“Eleanor’s memories.” He lifted her onto his lap, palm splayed over her stomach. “The bond’s digging up the past. To protect you.”

“Or haunt me.” She met his golden gaze. “Tell me. Did the other Voss mothers all die?”

His jaw tightened. “Three. Childbirth. The bond burned through them.”

“ And you knew?”

“I knew you’d survive.” He kissed her brow. “You’re stronger.”

A sharp knock cut them short. Lira burst in, letter crumpled in her fist. “From the northern border. Kael’s handwri

The road to Mount Voss tasted of ash.Elara’s lips were chapped from the wind, which carried grit from the volcano’s smoldering peak, painting the sky a sickly gray. Ellie, bundled in furs against the cold, sneezed as a gust blew ash into their faces, her silver fire flaring briefly to shield them both.“Volcano’s angry,” she said, her small voice muffled by her cloak. “Like it’s yelling at the void.”The ice witch, riding beside them, nodded, her blue eyes scanning the storm clouds that clung to the mountain’s slopes. “Mount Voss isn’t just stone and fire. It’s a vessel for ancient magic—the same magic that birthed the first trinity pact. The void magic is 亵渎 (desecrating) it.”He rode on Elara’s other side, his shadow magic rippling to deflect flying debris. His red brand glowed brighter the closer they got, casting a faint black light over his horse’s flanks. “Patrols found tracks three miles back. Large, clawed, covered in void residue.”Lira, behind them with a squad of wolves, g

The journey down from Blackspire Mountains was quieter than the climb up.Elara walked beside the ice witch, who leaned heavily on a staff carved from mountain ash, her steps unsteady but growing stronger with each mile. The void magic had left its mark—her skin still held a faint gray tinge, and her blue flames flickered weakly when she tried to conjure them—but her eyes had cleared, no longer clouded by darkness.“Thank you,” she said again, her voice stronger than it had been in the tower. “For not leaving me to the void. Most would have.”Elara smiled, glancing at Ellie, who rode on his shoulders, chattering to the silver fire that danced between her fingers. “We don’t leave pack behind. Even if the pack includes ice witches.”The witch laughed, a low, warm sound that made the air feel lighter. “Ice witches, wolves, and guardians—quite the motley crew. But effective, it seems.”He slowed his pace to walk beside them, his red brand glowing faintly in the afternoon light. “The tower

The tower’s second floor reeked of rot and void magic.Elara pressed a hand to her scar, which burned like a branding iron as they stepped over the threshold. The air here was thick, almost solid, and the walls pulsed with a sickly purple light that made her head throb.“Stick close,” he muttered, his shadow magic rippling around them like a cloak. His red brand glowed so bright it cast shadows on the stone floor, and his golden eyes narrowed at the hallway ahead, which branched into three paths, each marked with a different rune.Ellie pointed to the middle path, her silver fire flickering weakly in her palm. “This way. Witch is here. Hurt.”Lira, who’d been nursing a gash on her arm since their first skirmish with the hooded figures, grunted. “How can you tell? All these halls look the same—ugly and evil.”“Magic friend says so,” Ellie said, her small hand tightening around Elara’s fingers. “Void magic is thickest here. Like a heartbeat.”They followed the middle path, their footste

The Blackspire Tower loomed like a jagged tooth against the dawn sky, its black stone walls bleeding shadow magic that made Elara’s scar throb.“Stay sharp,” she muttered, gripping her moonstone dagger as they crept toward the massive iron gates. The sealing stone pulsed in her pouch, a steady drumbeat matching the pound of her heart. “Ellie, keep your fire ready. Lira, you and the wolves take the left flank—watch for traps.”Ellie nodded, her small hand wrapped around Elara’s wrist, silver fire flickering between her fingers. “Magic friend says the walls are listening. They’ll try to trick us.”He moved ahead, his shadow magic blending with the tower’s darkness, making him nearly invisible. When he signaled the coast was clear, they sprinted to the gates—carved with swirling void runes that glowed purple as they approached.“Blood magic,” he said, reappearing beside her. “The gates feed on life force. Can’t break them with brute strength.”Ellie stepped forward, her silver fire flari

The road to the Blackspire Mountains reeked of dark magic.Elara’s scar burned as they rode, the sealing stone in her pouch pulsing in time with her heartbeat. Ellie, tucked in front of her on the horse, frowned at the sky—overcast and gray, with storm clouds clinging to the mountain peaks ahead.“Bad air,” the pup muttered, her small hand clutching Elara’s cloak. Silver fire flickered between her fingers, as if sensing danger. He rode beside them, his shadow magic rippling like a second skin. His red brand glowed brighter the closer they got to the mountains, casting faint black light over his horse’s mane. “We’ll camp at the base tonight. Scout the perimeter at dawn.”Lira, behind them with a half-dozen wolves, grunted as her horse stumbled over a rock. “Scout all you want. I say we burn the tower down and ask questions later.”Elara smiled, but her jaw tightened. The sealing stone’s visions had grown clearer since they left the den—the ice witch, her form fading in a cell of black

The den’s gates loomed ahead, their stone archway draped with evergreen garlands that fluttered in the spring breeze. Elara smiled as the wolves on guard spotted them, their howls of welcome echoing across the valley.“Finally,” Lira muttered, adjusting the strap of her pack. “I swear, the mountain air ages you. I’ve got more gray fur than Gareth now.”Ellie, perched on his shoulders, giggled and pointed. “Look, Mamma! The den’s glowing.”Elara squinted, and sure enough, the stone walls shimmered with a faint tricolor light—gold, black, and blue—a reflection of the magic that now pulsed in their veins. “The trinity magic. It’s connecting us to home.”He shifted to human form as they approached, setting Ellie on the ground. His red brand glowed warmly against his palm, matching the scar on Elara’s wrist and the phoenix mark on Ellie’s chest. “They’ve been preparing for days. Feast, 篝火 (bonfire), the works.”The pack swarmed them as they passed through the gates, wolves nuzzling their h
