Zane’s POV

"Are you thinking about rejecting her?" My wolf's voice cuts through the fog of my thoughts, urgent and sharp.

I lean back against the cold stone of the wall, eyes closed, feeling the weight of the decision pressing down on me. "I need to protect her."

"Then keep her close. Don’t push her away," my wolf responds, his tone firm, like an order I can’t ignore.

The thoughts that have been swirling around in my mind for days now twist tighter. We’ve discussed this. Keeping Mabel safe, but I can’t see a way out.

Without her wolf, Mabel doesn't feel the bond. It's like she’s blind to it, untouched by the pull between us. She doesn’t even know how dangerous this situation is. All she knows is that I'm a stranger in her life—a complicated mess of a man she's been pushed toward for reasons she doesn’t fully understand.

"She’ll be attracted to you, Zane," my wolf says, a low growl accompanying the words. "But if you want her to stay, you’ll have to win her heart the hard way."

Romance. I’ve never been good at that. Yet, here I am, stuck in a situation where my survival depends on me becoming the man she’ll fall in love with. She’s not mine. Not yet.

I scowl, thinking about what this means for both of us. Without the mate bond to anchor her feelings, she can easily fall out of love. This whole thing could crumble before it even starts. The mating ceremony, the mark... It would only solidify the bond, but getting her to accept me—that’s the challenge.

My wolf doesn’t say anything more, but I can feel the pressure. The looming reality. And then, another thought hits me, gnawing at my insides.

“Is she the only Omega suffering in the Silverwood pack?” The question hits me hard. Probably not. But that doesn’t make it right.

I’ve made my decision. No matter what happens next, I won’t let her suffer. She deserves better than that.

I step into Alpha Gregory’s office, my mind still tangled with the thoughts of Mabel. But I need to focus. There’s something I have to do here, and it starts with the man across from me.

I don’t waste time with pleasantries. "Alpha Gregory," I start, my voice cold, steady. "I wonder if you're aware of the treatment your Omegas receive."

His eyebrows knit together, confusion flashing across his face. “Can you elaborate on that?” he asks, his voice defensive. He’s already on edge, I can tell.

I lean in slightly, my tone not giving away any emotion. "Are they fed? Taken care of? Treated well?"

Alpha Gregory shifts in his chair, clearly uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation. "I prefer strong warriors. But that doesn’t mean I’m mistreating anyone. All the Omegas have their own accommodations, three meals a day. They’re free to use the kitchen and eat whenever they need." He pauses, looking at me with a touch of irritation. "And if they mess up, we make them run laps. Pushups. It’s good for their bodies."

I narrow my eyes. "I’m not talking about training them. I’m talking about seeing them bruised, their necks marked with handprints." The anger flares inside me, and I don’t try to hide it.

For a second, there’s silence. I see a flicker in his eyes—he’s not as clueless as he’s pretending to be.

Alpha Gregory sighs, almost reluctantly. “Maybe they had a dispute amongst themselves.”

I meet his gaze, not backing down. "If you’re really unaware, I suggest you speak to your daughter." The words taste like venom in my mouth, but I need him to understand the gravity of the situation. “Lydia needs to learn how to deal with the pack. If she’s using violence as a solution, that will not be tolerated. Not under my watch.”

The tension in the room thickens. Alpha Gregory looks at me, but I see the wheels turning in his head. He’s calculating, playing his own game.

"Lydia’s role as Luna requires a softer touch," I add, my voice hard as steel. "If she can’t handle that, then maybe it’s time for her to step aside."

I leave the office, my mind heavy with thoughts of Mabel, but also of the conversation I just had with Alpha Gregory. I know his mind is working, trying to cover up whatever’s going on in his pack.

As I walk away, the last image of Lydia’s bruised face burns in my mind. Whatever happens next, I won’t let this go. Not until I’ve exposed the truth.

Zane’s POV “You should find her and make sure she’s fine.”I kept my voice sharp over the mind-link, but Vivian’s answer came back cool.“What about her?”My fingers curled into fists under the table. Every muscle in my chest itched to move, to do something. “Vivian.”“She’s a big girl,” she said. “I’m sure she’s fine.”“You’re disobeying me?” My aura slipped, a warning pulse that made nearby Alphas glance my way. I forced it down before anyone noticed too much.Vivian stiffened. Brave, stubborn, but not stupid. She knew one wrong move could split me from Tyler, and none of us wanted that.Still, she wasn’t giving me what I needed. Not about Mabel.“Calm down, Alpha,” Vivian said with an even tone, her words more formal now. “You don’t want your guests suspecting anything. Mabel is safe. I’m keeping an eye on her.”Safe. The word barely eased the weight in my chest. On the field, the referee wrapped up his speech to the players. I rose from the VIP box, microphone in hand.“Thank you

Mabel’s POVI barely registered the last stretch of forest clearing before we were standing before it—the packhouse. My heart skipped, and my feet dragged like lead. The perfectly manicured lawn, the towering mansion—everything felt wrong, too structured, too perfect. Not like the freedom of the woods. The grass beneath my feet turned to soft, reluctant steps as I approached. A shiver of discomfort twisted in my gut. This was it. This would be home."Here we are, Mabel," Zane’s voice broke through the stillness, firm and matter-of-fact as his hand tugged me forward.Home?I tried to hold my thoughts steady, but all I could think was: This is not home. I didn’t belong here. Not in this massive, grand place. The packhouse was for people like Zane—those who mattered. But me? I was no one. Just a girl with nowhere else to go.I forced myself to look around, needing to stay alert, just in case. You never know when you’ll need to make a quick exit. The packhouse was bigger than the one at S

(Mabel's POV)"Are you alright?" Zane asked, his voice cutting through the quiet of the night as we stepped out of the pack hospital."Yeah. Thank you, Alpha Zane," I answered, almost automatically. The words slipped out, but as soon as I said them, I realized the mistake.Zane arched an eyebrow. "Did you forget already?"My gaze shifted, unsure of what he meant. He smirked, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Just Zane. Say it."I hesitated. The Alpha wasn’t supposed to be addressed like that, especially not when there were eyes everywhere. But Zane wasn’t giving in. His smirk deepened, and I felt the weight of his expectation.I sighed and lowered my voice, scanning the area for any pack members who might overhear. "Zane."His face lit up with a victorious grin. "Do you want to walk, or should I call a car? The packhouse is about fifteen minutes away, if we cut through the forest."I didn’t understand why he was giving me a choice, but I wasn’t going to question it. "Anything is fine,

Mabel's POVThe moment I saw Trav walk into the exam room, I froze. The sterile scent of antiseptic hung thick in the air, and there I was—draped in that ridiculous hospital gown, feeling like the world could see every bruise and cut on my body.Nellie was drawing my blood, and Nettie was busy collecting swabs from my nose and mouth. But it was Trav who had my attention. His gaze lingered on the bruises, the marks that had become too familiar to me, too much of a reminder of what I'd endured.I caught his eye and saw the flicker of concern, but he didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to. Zane had already told him about my lack of a wolf, how it was affecting my healing. For a werewolf, these injuries wouldn’t take long to heal—maybe a day or two. But for someone like me, someone without a wolf, it could take weeks. His eyes fell to my bandaged wrist, and I felt the tension rise in my chest. The last thing I wanted was to rehash the details. But Trav didn’t hesitate."Who did this?" His

Mabel’s POVThe sun was barely over the horizon when we finally pulled up. Tyler's voice was a little too cheerful as he muttered, “Home sweet home. Welcome to the Stonebrook pack, Mabel.”I looked out the window, trying to take in the unfamiliar scenery. Tall trees passed in a blur as the car navigated a winding road. We slowed as we entered a town, and Vivian leaned forward, offering a casual explanation.“This is Brimvale,” she said, her tone light. “Everyone here belongs to the Stonebrook pack.”I took in the neat rows of houses with pretty backyards. But as we neared the town center, the buildings grew taller, crowded into two-story blocks that pressed together like old friends. We passed a few shops—nothing fancy, but everything seemed... well-loved."We’re getting close to the center," Vivian continued, her words fading as I watched a bakery, a clothing boutique, and a bookstore slide past us. There was a butcher's shop, a tattoo parlor—everything a person might need within wal

Mabel’s POVI felt the weight of Vivian’s gaze on me as she braided my hair, the strands pulling and tugging with a gentle rhythm.“All done,” she said with a satisfied hum.I glanced at the braids falling neatly over my shoulder, my fingers brushing them. "Thank you. This is beautiful," I said, my voice quieter than I intended, still caught up in the surprise of how well it turned out.“You’re welcome,” she replied, her smile softening. But then, her voice dropped to a whisper as she leaned closer. “You have gorgeous eyes, you know. Let me do your makeup next time?”I blinked, unsure if I should take the compliment or the offer. Both caught me off guard.Seeing my hesitation, Vivian chuckled and patted my shoulder. “No worries. We’ll do it later. We should go now.”She sent a quick thought to Zane via mind-link that we were ready to leave, and it wasn’t long before he appeared in the doorway.I could feel his eyes on me even before I looked up. There he was, standing in the doorway l
