Chapter 3

Author: Carnival Kid
Sage ultimately didn't let me sleep on the living room carpet.

With a look of sheer disgust, she hoisted me up by my collar, as if she were hauling a soaked burlap sack, and dragged me into the storage room at the far end of the second floor.

"This is your room. Don't cause any more trouble. Matthew isn't feeling well, and he can't handle any more scares, so you'd better behave yourself."

I scanned the shoebox, which was piled with old newspapers and dust, and felt at ease. The corner looked perfect for building a nest. It would've been perfect if there was a little seaweed.

I crawled sluggishly onto the narrow bed and happened to find an abandoned stuffed toy beside the pillow. I balanced it on top of my head, savoring the perfectly balanced center of gravity, and drifted peacefully off to sleep.

Early the next morning, I was jolted awake by a shrill scream.

Matthew was in the dining room, with a shattered blue-and-white porcelain vase at his feet.

It was Garrett's favorite antique, supposedly worth as much as a house.

"Drake, how could you smash Dad's favorite vase just because you're jealous of me?" He pointed at me as I slowly walked into the dining room.

Yes, after waking up, I seemed to have learned how to walk like a human.

When Garrett emerged from his study, he was so livid that his hands were trembling. Even his fingertip shook as he pointed at the shards. "What do you have to say for yourself, Drake?"

I stopped in my tracks and looked down at the shards. I thought about it for roughly five seconds before raising my head and looking at Garrett calmly. "Well, what's done is done. Maybe it wanted to rest as well. After all, it's been standing there every day. That must be exhausting."

Silence gripped the dining room for a full 30 seconds.

Garrett's expression shifted drastically. "What the hell are you on about? That's a five-million-dollar antique!"

The five-million-dollar price tag didn't faze me in the slightest. At the bottom of the sea, even the most exquisite pearls were merely footrests. We capybaras weren't particularly concerned with worldly possessions.

"Money is just a figure, and a vase is just a piece of clay. We should learn to make peace with its passing. There's no need to get so worked up."

I pulled out a chair, sat down, and leisurely began peeling an orange.

Matthew's sobs came to an abrupt halt. He probably hadn't anticipated this kind of reaction from me.

Usually, this would've been the moment when I yelled that I was innocent and accused him of breaking the vase himself. However, I was a capybara. The word "argument" didn't exist in my dictionary. It was far too exhausting.

Sage rushed over and snatched the freshly peeled orange right out of my hand. "You still have the nerve to eat? Apologize to Matthew! Get down on your knees and apologize to Dad!"

I looked at my empty hand before shifting my attention to her furious face. "The orange is innocent. Give it back to me first."

Enraged, she hurled the orange onto the floor and stomped on it viciously, sending juice splattering in all directions. "Drake, did you fry your brain out there?"

I looked at the puddle of orange juice on the floor and let out a soft sigh. There was a hint of pity in my eyes. "Now, the orange is also smashed. It, too, wants to rest."

Chloe clutched her chest and looked as though she was about to suffocate. Leaning against her chair, she gasped for air. "What did we do to deserve this?! How on earth did I give birth to such a monster?"

I ignored their outburst and calmly picked another perfectly round orange from the fruit platter. This time, I didn't peel it.

I carefully balanced it on top of my head. Then, I closed my eyes, rested my hands on my knees, and began my morning meditation.

Matthew gaped at me as I sat there blank-faced with an orange balanced on top of my head. He probably thought I had somehow transformed into some indescribable, terrifying entity.

Matthew was arrested soon after because I provided some crucial evidence. For instance, the voice recorder he had hidden inside the stuffed toy. It captured Drake's last moments. On the day the police came to take Matthew away, he desperately tried to charge at me and tear my face apart. "Drake Kensington, you crazy bastard! You're not Drake!"I stood on the steps, holding a bright red orange in my hand and balancing it steadily on top of my head. "Oh, you're right. I'm not him. I'm just a passing envoy of justice who happened to stop by to settle a score."When Matthew was shoved into the police car, Jasmine lurked in the shadows nearby. The way she looked at me was filled with scrutiny and a sinister confidence that told me she was certain of her victory. Jasmine walked up to me and smiled. "Drake, now that you've gotten rid of that eyesore, are you happy?"I let her hand brush against my skin. The slick sensation felt as if a venomous snake was slithering over me."What's hap

While the Kensingtons and the Wellingtons were busy preparing for the wedding, I was busy digging holes in the yard. I dug one hole after another, uprooting Chloe's expensive flowers and planting the sweet potatoes and lettuce that I liked instead. After finding out what I had done, Chloe was so furious that she fainted twice. However, I carried on regardless. "Drake, what on earth are you trying to do?" Sage asked in exasperation, standing at the edge of the yard and looking at me, who was covered in dirt.I stopped shoveling and wiped away the sweat from my forehead. "I'm preparing a backup plan. If the Wellingtons go bankrupt, I can at least survive on these lettuces."Sage scoffed. "You must be out of your mind if you think the Wellingtons will go bankrupt."I smiled, but I didn't elaborate. I continued spending my days basking in the sun and daydreaming.…Chloe started frequenting my storage room. She replaced my bedding with the softest silk sheets and filled the room w

The dining room instantly fell so silent that one could've heard a pin drop. Matthew blanched in an instant. Garrett frowned. "What on earth are you blabbering about? What hand?"I withdrew my gaze and went back to chewing on my lettuce with my head down. "Oh, I must've remembered it wrong. Perhaps it was a giant crab that was jealous of my good looks." Matthew sprang to his feet. "I… I don't feel well. I'll head back to my room first."I smiled as I watched him flee. Matthew was shaking in his boots.…In the days that followed, I became a ghost in the Kensington residence. Garrett and Chloe were busy ironing out the wedding details with the Wellingtons. A week before the wedding, Matthew burst into my room and smashed everything I owned. "What right do you have to marry Jasmine, Drake? I'm the one she loves!"I sat in my chair and quietly stared at the debris on the floor. "Oh, you should go take it up with her."Matthew trembled with rage. I rose to my feet and amb

Noticing there was no lettuce on the dinner table, I simply sat there and zoned out.…On the drive back, Jasmine abruptly grasped my hand. "I really didn't appreciate what you said back there, Drake. I don't like greedy men." Then, she squeezed my knuckles hard, sending a sharp, distinct wave of pain through my hand. I didn't resist. I merely turned my head and looked at her quietly. "Ms. Wellington, do you know why capybaras get along so well with all kinds of animals?"Jasmine frowned. "No. Why do you ask?""Because in the eyes of a capybara, whether you're a lion or a bunny, you'll all turn into nutrients for the earth. So, I don't care if you're happy or not, because in my eyes, you're already well on your way to becoming fertilizer."Her expression instantly hardened, and she slammed on the brakes. "Drake Kensington, you asked for this!" She wrapped her hands around my neck, pinning me hard against the headrest. My breathing grew labored, but I still didn't panic.I sim

Drake was thrashing, begging for mercy. Yet, Jasmine merely sneered as she forced the drug down his throat… I felt a violent surge of nausea welling up from deep within this body. It was a trauma etched into its soul.My grip tightened around the door handle, my fingernails digging into the seat and leaving a stark white mark on the leather trim. "What's wrong? Are you not feeling well?" Jasmine noticed something was off with me. I took a deep breath and forcefully suppressed the nausea. "I'm fine. I just think the air in here is too filthy." Jasmine snorted and floored the gas pedal.…Wellington Manor was situated in the suburbs. The moment I stepped into the living room, Jasmine's parents were already waiting for us."Oh, it's so good to have you back, Drake." Jasmine's mother, Jane Smith, took my hand, wearing a phony smile. "I think we should host your wedding with Jasmine as soon as possible."I pulled my hand away and sat down in the largest mahogany chair in the cent

I didn't think there was anything wrong with what I'd said. I was merely offering a sincere piece of advice. As a capybara, I'd always believed that while running away might be shameful, it was genuinely useful. "Drake, how can you upset Dad like this?" Matthew started his performance again, his voice choked with emotion. "Jasmine was scared out of her wits by you tonight. She's your future wife, for goodness' sake!"I turned my head and quietly stared at Matthew. I noticed that his foundation was too cakey. Under the lights, he looked like a moldy steamed bun. "She wasn't scared. I merely struck a nerve, and she's probably busy stitching herself back together," I slowly said before padding my way up the stairs. "Hold it right there!" Sage lunged forward and blocked my path. "Jasmine just called. She said she'll pick you up tomorrow to have dinner at Wellington Manor. She said she wants to help you recover your lost memories." Looking into Sage's eyes, which were filled with c
