Chapter 4

Author: Falling Snow
When Yvonne arrived at my house, she complained that the narrow, winding streets in my neighborhood had scratched up her newly serviced car.

"I told you not to bring your fancy cars here."

The rundown neighborhood roads were a maze, with electric scooters parked everywhere.

When Jason first moved in, he could never find his way around. He insisted on waiting for me outside the neighborhood entrance when I finished work in the morning.

More often than not, I'd find him miserably standing under a streetlight—getting eaten alive by mosquitoes—and have to lead him home after he'd gotten lost trying to find the entrance.

"This is the crappiest car I own."

Yvonne rolled her eyes and tapped the partition of the Mercedes, signaling the driver to pull away. "Has Jason never taken you anywhere in a car?"

She leaned over curiously and helped me pull out the seatbelt I'd been struggling to find.

I pressed my lips together and said nothing.

I was saving every penny I earned to pay for my education, so I couldn't afford to waste money on cabs.

When I was with Jason, I always rode behind him on his beat-up scooter, which had barely functioning brakes.

At first, he could hardly keep it straight. But the more he rode, the more confident he became. He started twisting the throttle a little harder.

The hot summer wind whipped against my face as I clung to his T-shirt around his waist. I'd lean forward and kiss his cheek whenever he turned his smiling face toward me.

That was when I felt closest to him.

"Do you know what people say about you?" Yvonne asked. "They say you're the easiest and cheapest girlfriend Jason has ever had. Before you, he used to spend three million a month on women. Even then, that wasn't enough.

"Ever since you two got together, he's saved enough money to buy three companies."

She turned to me with a serious look. "Has he ever given you money in the three years you've been together?"

"He has." I absently rested my hand on my stomach. "The most he's ever given me was 800."

That was in our second year together.

Jason hadn't lost interest in me as Lilian had predicted. If anything, he seemed to care about me more as time went on.

He even spent his days off handing out flyers with me under the scorching sun. His arms got so badly sunburned that his skin started peeling. Still, he grinned and handed me the only bottle of cold water.

One day, I fainted from low blood sugar and ended up in the hospital. That was when I found out that I was pregnant.

Still in a daze, I watched the doctor slide a bill across the desk.

"You'll need to pay the deposit to register for prenatal care."

The $3,000 deposit stood out in stark black print.

I called Jason.

"What's wrong, love?" he asked with an amused chuckle.

He was probably playing poker as I could hear chips clinking in the background, followed by someone casually calling out, "20,000 dollars."

"I'm at the hospital," I rasped, overcome by sudden pain.

"What's wrong?" he replied, his tone growing tense. "Are you sick?"

"Not exactly," I sniffled. "Jason, could you send me 3,000 dollars?"

He went quiet for a moment. Then, I heard the rustle of clothing.

When he spoke up again, he sounded anxious and slightly out of breath. "Riley, did you see me somewhere today?"

I froze, then realization hit me. He thought I'd seen him behaving like the rich heir he was and that I was asking for money to test him.

I chuckled and closed my eyes. "I haven't seen you today."

"Then why are you suddenly asking me for money?" he muttered.

"Let me check how much I have left. I'll give you whatever I can tonight, okay?"

"Forget it."

I pressed a hand against my icy chest and hung up.

Then, I returned to the doctor's office.

"What are the cheapest abortion pills you offer?"

That day, I paid 800 dollars for an abortion.

I spent the next three hours writhing in pain and drenched in sweat.

When the nurse came to help me afterward, she sighed and said, "Thank goodness the abortion was complete. If it hadn't been, you might have needed a procedure to remove the remaining tissue."

I smiled and wiped away the tears at the corners of my eyes.

"Guess I got lucky, then."

When I got home that evening, Jason took one look at my pale face and froze.

"Riley, were you really sick?"

He dropped to one knee in front of me. His hands trembled slightly as he asked, "Is it serious? What did the doctor say?"

For a moment, I thought that if I told him the truth, he would finally be honest with me.

But I didn't want his honesty anymore.

I wrapped my arms around my aching stomach and curled into a ball. "I'm fine now."

"That's a relief," he sighed before reaching into his pocket for something. "This is how much I've earned recently. I borrowed a little from my friends, too."

He couldn't even look me in the eye. "Here… take it."

I lowered my gaze.

In his hands was a crumpled wad of bills.

There were exactly 800 dollars.

My first month in Luten was miserable.Struggling with the unfamiliar language outside class and the rainy weather left me feeling drained. My low blood sugar, which had been under control for a while, acted up three times. After waking up in the campus clinic yet again, I stared at the chocolate on the bedside table and sighed. I finally decided I had to make myself adapt to the local food.I left the clinic under an umbrella as the doctor kept reminding me to take better care of myself.Just outside, I came across someone I never expected to see."Riley…" Jason hurried toward me. "You're—"When he noticed how tense I looked, he sighed. "Sorry. I heard you haven't been well lately, and I couldn't stop worrying about you.""Really?" I asked with a mocking smile. "Then I suppose I should thank you for having someone keep tabs on me all the way out here, Mr. Lane."He snapped his head up, then lowered it again. "That's not what this is… Riley, why won't you give me another chance

On the day Jason told me he'd called off his engagement, I received my acceptance letter from a university in Luten.Yvonne had recommended the school and even helped me choose my major."How about luxury brand management? The courses are taught in Westorian, so you won't have to worry about the language barrier. I know people in the industry, too. Once you've graduated and returned, I can help you find a job."She confidently thumped her chest. "Consider it a thank-you for bringing me good luck!"Jason's broken engagement with the Jones family had caused quite a stir in their social circle.Pretending to be poor wasn't a big deal in itself, but keeping the act up for three whole years and calling off his engagement over a woman he'd dated was.The scandal had embarrassed both families and put Yvonne on the spot. Word had it that Jason's grandfather had even given her a one percent stake in the company as compensation.I was busy folding my clothes and packing them into my suitc

My grandmother was buried on the mountain behind the village. It took crossing two hills from the run-down house I'd grown up in to reach her grave.I'd planned to let Jason rest for a while, but he took one look at the mold creeping up the walls and the layer of dust covering the furniture, then quickly stepped back outside."Let's go see your grandmother. I'll take you home when we're done."I nodded. I didn't feel particularly attached to this place, either.I wanted to visit my grandmother one last time since I didn't know how long it would be before I could come back.I knew Jason worked out regularly, but he was panting by the time we crossed the first hill in his dress shoes."Why… why did you bury her so far away?"He grabbed my arm and leaned against a tree. He insisted on taking a break before we went any farther. "I saw so many other graves on the way here…""Those are private cemeteries," I said quietly. "It's just Grandma and me. We don't belong there."Jason open

The next day, three million dollars landed in my bank account.I'd never seen so many zeros in my life. After counting the money repeatedly, I convinced myself that the amount was real.I let out a sigh of relief. Those three years had finally paid off.I immediately booked a flight home.To my surprise, Jason came running after me at the airport."Where are you going?" he demanded, his voice edged with anger. "I told you I was going home to break off the engagement. I even transferred the money to you. Why did you just up and leave me?"I frowned. "I'm not leaving. I'm just going home to visit my grandmother's grave."Not yet, anyway. I'd leave afterward."Fine," he huffed. "Then I'll go with you."I gave him a once-over and laughed. He was in a suit. "You don't have to come."He wouldn't last five minutes out there."Why can't I?" Jason's stubborn streak kicked in. "I'm coming with you no matter what."He even upgraded my ticket to first class, then gave me a hard time a

By the time I got home, Yvonne had texted me. "Sorry. I didn't think you'd end up getting slapped. I only meant to take you there for a quick look."I turned my phone face down, closed my eyes, and sighed.Yvonne was naive. I'd used her to set up the whole thing, yet she was sincerely apologizing to me.Jason walked in just as my eyelashes trembled."Riley…"He pressed a cup of hot water into my hands. He had won the cup for me at a ring-toss booth in the mall two Valentine's Days ago. It was cheaply made. Whenever I filled it with hot water, it gave off an unpleasant smell of plastic.Still, I'd never been able to bring myself to throw it away."The rent here is cheap. I don't want to move."I looked up at him and smiled. "I'm sure Mr. Lane has plenty of other places to live. I doubt you'd want to keep anything I bought you, either. You don't have to pack. Just leave today.""Riley, please don't do this," he pleaded, dropping to one knee. "Please don't talk about breaking up

Yvonne took me to an exclusive club. She had someone bring me a server's uniform and a hat."Just stay behind me," she whispered as she adjusted the brim of my hat. "Stand in the corner and watch. Once you've seen what you came to see, I'll take you home."I hummed an acknowledgment, then lowered my head and thought about how to let Jason see my face without making it look deliberate. The floor manager shoved a bottle of imported wine into my arms."Be careful when you serve this. Mr. Lane had it flown in directly from Vaudrelle. One bottle costs just over 600,000 dollars."I lowered my head to hide my scorn. The most expensive bottle of wine at the club where Jason had arranged for me to work cost no more than 60,000 dollars. No wonder he never worried about giving himself away in front of me.He'd wear a three-million-dollar watch and tell me he picked it up from a street stall for 30 bucks. He always believed that we came from two different worlds and that we were bound to
