Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Dreamlike
Out of nowhere, Carina broke into a smile. She got out of her chair and walked over to me, taking my hand in a show of familiar intimacy.

"See? I knew you had potential! But the higher-ups might not even bother reading the proposal if it came from you. Here's what I think we should do. Let's put my name on the proposal, and I'll take it to Mr. Scott myself.

"Once the deal is closed, I'll arrange a promotion for you and make you a manager," Carina declared.

Her expression made it seem like this was a perfectly reasonable thing to do. I couldn't help but feel pretty exasperated by that. Few in this world could be this brazen about stealing someone else's credit.

I hurriedly nodded, making myself seem flattered by her offer. "Thank you for looking out for me, Ms. Lewis."

The self-satisfied Carina patted my hand and said, "That's all. You can go now. Oh, the company is organizing a cocktail party to welcome Mr. Scott this evening. You should come as well."

That caught me off guard. "You want me to attend the party? But I don't have anything to wear to a cocktail party."

Carina eyed me scornfully. "Who said you'd be attending as a guest? You can help the catering crew with the serving. Remember not to embarrass me."

I lowered my head, my eyes flashing coldly.

She wanted me to be a server, huh?

So be it, then. We were going to see who would end up humiliated this evening.

The cocktail party was held at the city's top luxury hotel. Only the wealthy and powerful were in attendance.

Dressed in an ill-fitting, black-colored server's uniform, I moved through the crowd carrying a tray of drinks.

Not far away, Carina had her arm looped through John's as she pealed with laughter. The so-called couture gown she wore was actually just an outdated castoff she'd dug out from some random vintage shop.

John, who was already balding despite not even being in his 50s, kept his lustful gaze fixed on Carina. "I'm counting on you this evening, Carrie. As long as you bag Mr. Scott, once we offload that project, we'll be set for the rest of our lives!"

Carina leaned against his shoulder and laughed coquettishly.

"Don't worry, Mr. Hammond. You know what I'm capable of. Mr. Scott may have a nasty temper, but a man's a man. What man isn't happy to have some fun outside?"

I was passing right by them with the tray of drinks in hand when I caught the tail end of her deplorable words. I stumbled on purpose, and a glass of red wine tipped right onto Carina's secondhand couture gown.

Carina shrieked and shoved me away. "Are you blind! Do you know how expensive this gown is? You wouldn't even be able to pay me back if you auctioned yourself off!"

I hit the floor hard, scraping the palms of my hands. But I scrambled back up immediately to offer a flustered apology.

"I'm so sorry, Ms. Lewis! I didn't mean to do it… I just lost my balance…"

The surrounding guests gestured toward us and whispered among themselves.

Looking pretty livid, John grabbed my arm and snarled, "Do you know where we are right now, you clumsy buffoon? Get the hell out of here now!"

Carina stared at the wine stain on her gown, her body trembling with rage. She grabbed me by the collar and hissed through gritted teeth, "You did this on purpose, didn't you, Bailey? Admit it! You're just jealous I get to be the center of attention this evening, right?"

I fervently shook my head, tears pooling in my eyes. "That's not true, Carrie! We're best friends. Why would I do something like that to you?"

"Shut up! Who are you calling your best friend, huh? Who do you think you are?" Carina flung me aside before turning to John.

"Mr. Hammond, I know for a fact that Bailey Scott here is known for her sticky fingers at the office. I suspect she didn't come here to help at all—she came to steal!"

John instantly caught on and bellowed, "Security! Seize that thief!"

Several security guards rushed over immediately and grabbed me, pinning my arms in place on both sides.

As I struggled to break free, I shouted, "I didn't steal anything! How can you detain me like this?"

Snorting, Carina walked over and eyed me. "Why not? As the head of the project management department, I'm your boss, and you're just one of my workhorses. This isn't over yet, Bailey."

Just then, someone opened the ballroom doors.

Carina screamed and raged at the unfairness of the fate she'd been given. I walked up to her and looked down at the person I once considered my best friend."You're blaming the world for being too unfair? When you couldn't afford your college tuition, I used my allowance to cover it for you. When you couldn't find a job after graduation, I begged Dalton to get you into Lumina Corporation."All I did was set up a few traps to lure out the leeches in the company. Who knew you'd walk right into them and cross the line with me?"Although I didn't raise my voice, my words cut deep."I gave you countless chances. You're the one who drove yourself into a dead end. You don't just want a better life for yourself. What you really want is to be better than everyone else by trampling all over them, ruining them to bolster yourself."Carina stared at me in a daze, her lips trembling. She couldn't say a single word.I heard the sound of police cars and fire trucks arriving.Several police off

Carina's predicament was simply an act of divine justice.Just then, my phone rang with a call from an unknown number. When I answered it, Carina's hoarse voice came through the line."Are you satisfied now, Bailey? I lost everything. My entire life has been ruined! You won. You get to be the high-and-mighty heiress, watching me get trampled into the ground like some pathetic rat. I bet you're thrilled to see this, huh?"As she screamed hysterically into the phone, I heard police sirens in the background. I figured the debt collectors must've drawn the attention of the police, who'd taken her back to the station yet again.I calmly replied, "I didn't ruin your life, Carina. You did. If you'd treated everyone fairly and hadn't been greedy for things that weren't yours, you'd still be a department head at Lumina Corporation right now. You did this to yourself."There was a brief silence on the other end, but Carina soon snorted."Hah! Stop acting like a saint in front of me, Bailey

"I made sure they gave you the right amount of ice, too. I went downstairs to get it just for you," Jessica added. Her hands trembled as she held the coffee out, too scared to lift her head. The others behind her quickly chimed in."Ms. Scott, it was that bitch Carina who forced us to pick on you before.""That's right. Truth be told, we've always admired you for being extremely capable!""Please give us another chance. From now on, we'll be your most loyal employees."I didn't take the coffee. Instead, I walked over to the couch and sat down."You're saying you had no choice, huh?" I remarked before scoffing. "Yesterday, when Carina told me to redo the document, one of you said I was just coasting in the company."When she told me to get her coffee, one of you also kicked a trash can to my feet and told me to take the trash out while I was at it."Jessica's face went pale, the coffee cup shaking in her hands. "Ms. Scott, I… I just lost my head for a moment and—""Enough. Drop

The next day, on the top floor of Lumina Tower, I sat in the large executive chair, spinning a fountain pen between my fingers. There was a knock at the door. Lionel Chase, the head of security, rushed in, drenched in sweat."Ms. Scott, Ms. Lewis is causing a scene down in the lobby. She demands to see you and says nothing's going to stop her."I raised a brow. Shouldn't she be in police custody right now?I figured Felix Turner, her fiance who worked as a lawyer, must've spent a fortune to bail her out."Let her come up."Five minutes later, two security guards escorted Carina into the office. She looked nothing like her former sophisticated self. Her eyes were sunken, and her hair disheveled. The moment she saw me, she broke free from the guards and dropped to her knees in front of my desk."Bailey, please withdraw the charges. I'm begging you! Felix broke off the engagement after he found out I'd offended Scott Group. He only helped me this one last time so that I could meet

The arrogant smile on Carina's face stiffened before morphing into a look of pure disbelief. The USB drive slipped out of John's hands, clattering onto the floor.Grasping Dalton's hand, I used his support to get back on my feet before brushing off my knees.Looking at the stunned Carina and John, I said with a faint smile, "Well, Mr. Hammond, Ms. Lewis, are you two using the data from the company under my name to accuse me, the heir to Scott Group, of corporate espionage? Don't you think that claim is… a little too absurd?"Carina's eyes widened. She stared at me, lips trembling. It took her some time before she managed to force out, "D-Don't be ridiculous. Who are you calling the heir to Scott Group? Have you lost your mind, Bailey? You're just a broke nobody who can't even afford your rent!"I walked up to Carina and slapped her hard across the face. She stumbled onto the floor, bleeding from her mouth."That slap is payback for the shameless way you've been stealing my propo

Dalton walked in, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit and flanked by a team of bodyguards. His arrival drew everyone's attention.Carina's eyes lit up. She swiftly put on a pitiful expression and hurried forward to greet him."You're finally here, Mr. Scott. I'm so sorry about this. There's a thieving employee here causing trouble right now. I sincerely apologize for the disruption to your evening."Dalton stopped in his tracks. His gaze cut through the crowd and landed on me, who was being restrained by the security guards. He narrowed his eyes slightly, as if considering something. The atmosphere in the ballroom froze over. When Carina saw Dalton looking at me, she assumed he was put off by my disheveled appearance and doubled down on her performance. She walked up to me and, without hesitation, kicked me in the knee. "Get lost," Dalton commanded without wasting any more of his words.Carina's face went ghostly pale, her eyes reddening instantly. "How can you humiliate me like this, Mr. Scott? I'm just trying to do what's best for the company and—"Dalton slammed the door shut in her face, causing her nose to a
