I closed the car door as carefully as I could. Every instinct in me wanted to slam it hard enough to rip it off its hinges, but I couldnāt.
Jayden was finally asleep. After so many minutes of bleeding, shaking and fighting through pain that no healer could explain, he had finally drifted off against the back seat. His face looked exhausted even in sleep, his brows still drawn together like his body refused to let him rest.
The last thing I wanted was to wake him.
I rested my forehead against the roof of the car and let out a long breath.
āFuckā¦ā
Victor chose death. Why couldnāt he just stay dead? The thought hit me so suddenly that I almost laughed at myself.
Yes⦠I had missed the blood sucker and I mourned him. Hell, Iād cried harder than I ever thought I would.
For ten years Iād lived with the guilt of knowing my biggest rival sacrifice himself for the two people he loved most. I respected him. I loved him in my own way. He had become a part of me. But these last four monthsā¦These last four months had been hell.
Every single day Jayden woke up in pain and that damned mark burned deeper into his skin. Every single day I watched the strongest man I knew slowly fall apart while I stood there completely helpless.
The resentment Iād buried with love had somehow crawled back out of its grave. I hated him for this and that even after dying, he still had the power to make Jayden suffer.
āStop cursing the dead, Sammy.ā
Janeās voice pulled me from my thoughts. I looked over at her while pulling a cigarette from my pocket.
She folded her arms.
āYou know Jay hates it when you smoke.ā
āI know.ā
āSo why are you lighting one?ā
āBecause if I donāt, Iāll start punching trees.ā
She sighed.
āFair enough.ā
I lit the cigarette anyway and took a long drag before looking back at the car.
āā¦Do you think heās alive?ā
Jane followed my gaze.
āI do.ā
āIt would be good if heās alive.ā Another drag. āBut can he stop breaking my Jay just to announce his resurrection?ā
The words came out harsher than I intended.
Jane didnāt answer immediately. Instead, she leaned against the car beside me.
āHeās alive, Sammyā¦.. The way Jaydenās body is reacting tells me the Dragon Prince has returned.ā She hesitated. āButā¦ā
I turned to look at her. āWill you stop speaking in riddles and just tell me what the ābutā is?ā
Jane remained quiet for several seconds. āYou saw the headquarters of the supreme burnt into ashes.ā
āIndeed.ā I nodded, I can never forget that day.
āYou saw nothing but ashes that day, nothing was saved.ā She looked me straight in the eyes. āEveryone in that building burned.ā
I nodded.
āThere werenāt even bones left behind.ā
The cigarette between my fingers suddenly didnāt taste so good anymore.
Jane continued.
āSo tell meā¦ā
āWhat if Victor body can never be recovered?ā
I frowned, that is the concept I donāt also understand, he fucking burnt into ashes so how the hell is he alive.
āWhat ifā¦ā She paused. āā¦Victor was reborn?ā
I stared at her.
āā¦Reborn?ā
She nodded.
āWhatās that supposed to mean?ā
Jane blinked at me. āSo much for being the Supreme King.ā
I rolled my eyes. āOh, here we go.ā
āDid you even read the history books my husband spent months collecting for you?ā
āā¦Jayden read them.ā
She pinched the bridge of her nose.
āWell that canāt be helped since heās the brainy one between you two.ā
āI was busy.ā
āYou were sleeping.ā
āI refuse to confirm or deny that accusation.ā
Jane laughed despite herself before becoming serious again.
āThere are records⦠Very old records.ā
āAncient creatures whose souls returned after death.ā
I frowned.
āI thought those were myths.ā
āSo did everyone.ā
She looked toward the sleeping Jayden.
āUntil his mate mark came back.ā
Silence settled between us. My mind raced through everything she had said.
If⦠If she was right⦠Then Victor hadnāt returned from the dead. He had started over.
āAs someone else?ā
Jane nodded.
āPossibly.ā
āA child?ā
āPossibly.ā
āA newborn?ā
āPossibly.ā
I stared at her in horror.
āSo your brilliant plan is to send warriors across the kingdoms looking for every baby born four months ago?ā
āIt makes the most sense.ā
I rubbed both hands over my face.
āSo what happens if they actually find him?ā
Jane raised an eyebrow.
āWhat do you mean?ā
āWhat do you mean, what do I mean?ā I pointed dramatically toward the sleeping Jayden.
āIf Victor is really a babyā¦ā
I pointed at myself.
āā¦then what?ā
āJay and I are supposed to raise Baby Victor?ā
Jane opened her mouth. Closed it again. Then⦠āTorrrrā¦ā She made a face somewhere between horror and disbelief.
āOh.ā
āOh?ā
āOh.ā
I stared at her. āThatās your response?ā
She looked genuinely disturbed now.
āā¦This is actually screwed up.ā
āNo kidding.ā
I started pacing. āJayden and I donāt even have children yet.ā
āAnd now youāre telling me thereās a chance our first child is going to beā¦ā
I couldnāt even finish the sentence.
āā¦Victor?ā
Jane slowly nodded. I stopped walking.
āWait.ā I pointed at her. āYouāre kiddingā¦.Please tell me youāre kidding.ā Jane loves pranking me, this has to be one of those crazy pranks right..?
āI wish I was.ā She looked completely serious. āThe records donāt explain every detail.ā āThey only say rebirth is possible.ā
āAnd if Victor truly has been rebornā¦ā
Her eyes shifted back to the car where Jayden slept peacefully for the first time all day.
āā¦then weāre searching for someone who doesnāt even know he used to exist.ā
A cold shiver ran down my spine and a sudden urgency hit me. I pulled my phone from my pocket so quickly I nearly dropped it.
āIf thatās even a possibilityā¦ā I muttered while scrolling through my contacts. āIām not wasting another second.ā
Jane watched me without saying a word. The call connected almost immediately.
āYour Majesty.ā
āGather every captain in every kingdom,ā I ordered. āI want every maternity ward, every healerās house, every orphanage and every village birth record from the last four months checked.ā
There was a brief silence on the other end.
āā¦Your Majesty?ā
āYou heard me.ā
āWeāre looking for a newborn.ā
The captain sounded thoroughly confused.
āA newborn⦠sir?ā
āYes.ā
I pinched the bridge of my nose.
āAnd before you ask another question, no, I havenāt lost my mind.ā
Jane snorted beside me.
āI heard that,ā I muttered.
āSearch every child born within the last four months. If anything unusual happened during the birth, if strange magic was reported, if a child was abandoned, if anything seems out of place, I want a report on my desk before sunrise.ā
āAt once, Your Majesty.ā
The call ended and I stared at my phone for a long second. āThis feels insane.ā
āIt is insane,ā Jane agreed.
āBut weāve exhausted every logical explanation.ā
Before I could answer, the rear car door opened. Both of us turned so quickly it almost gave me whiplash.
Jayden stepped out slowly, one hand resting against the door for support. His face had regained some color, but he still looked exhausted and his eyes moved between Jane and me before narrowing suspiciously.
āā¦What babies?ā
I blinked.
āWhat?ā
āI heard you talking.ā
His voice was still hoarse from earlier.
āWhat babies?ā
I hurried toward him.
āBaby, you should be resting. Are you still in pain?ā
He frowned, completely ignoring my question.
āWhat babies, Sammy?ā
I looked helplessly at Jane. She looked back at me with the exact same expression. Neither of us had expected him to wake up at that exact moment. Jayden crossed his arms despite how tired he looked.
āI asked a question.ā
Jane finally cleared her throat.
āā¦Baby Victor.ā
The words hung in the air.
Jayden stared at her.
āā¦What?ā
Jane repeated herself, though she sounded far less confident this time.
āā¦Baby Victor.ā
Jayden looked from her to me.
Then back to her again.
āā¦What exactly is a Baby Victor?ā
I rubbed a hand over my face.
āThis is going to sound absolutely ridiculous.ā
āIt already does.ā
Jane took a careful step forward.
āThe old records mention rebirth.ā
Jayden didnāt interrupt.
āThey suggest that when certain ancient creatures die, their souls donāt disappear forever.ā
He still said nothing.
āTheyāre⦠reborn.ā
Jayden slowly nodded.
āSo far, Iām following.ā
Jane took a deep breath. āWe think Victor may have been reborn.ā
Another slow nod.
āAs a baby.ā
Complete silence took over around us. Jayden simply stared at both of us. One second⦠Two secondsā¦Three.. the blinked.
āā¦You thinkā¦ā He pointed at himself. āā¦my six-foot-four dragon princeā¦ā
He pointed toward me. āā¦is currently wearing diapers?ā
I bit the inside of my cheek. When he said it out loud, it sounded even
