Chapter 4

作者: Andy
This double life went on for a whole semester.

The weather slowly warmed up, but the rink was still as cold as an icebox.

I sat on a plastic chair by the boards, mending a jersey that had come apart at the seam.

Blake sent the puck flying off his stick, and it shot straight at my head.

"Quinn, look out!" Blake shouted.

I had no time to react. All I could do was shut my eyes and cover my head.

The pain I braced for never came.

A gust of wind swept past, and Nathan's tall frame blocked me. He caught the blazing-fast puck in his hand with a low grunt.

I opened my eyes and saw a spot of red seeping from the edge of his glove.

"Are you okay?" I shot to my feet, my voice shaking.

Nathan tossed the puck back onto the ice and turned to glare at me.

"Are you stupid? You don't know how to duck? If I hadn't caught that, you'd be in the hospital with a concussion right now!"

His tone was sharp, but his brows were tightly knit and there was a panic in his eyes he couldn't hide.

"I... I didn't react in time." I lowered my head, and from the fright my eyes stung.

And sure, he'd been fierce about it.

But he'd genuinely done everything he could to protect me.

At home, even if my little brother smashed a rock on my head, my mom would only yell at me for not dodging.

Nathan looked at my reddened eyes and raked a hand through his hair in agitation.

He suddenly pulled off his oversized team jacket and dropped it right over my head.

"It's freezing and you're sitting there shaking like a leaf. Put it on. If you get sick from the cold, who's going to do our chores?"

I poked my head out of the jacket, but he'd already skated off.

That night, the IceTyrant account got a message from Nathan.

"Master, I played hero and saved a damsel today. Boosted team unity again! But why was that girl so cold? Downright rude! What on earth do women even think about?"

I was about to reply, "She's thinking about how to poison you."

Then Nathan had a sudden epiphany. "I get it, she's still scared of me. I need to be gentler, right, Master?"

I'd meant to type out that she wasn't scared at all...

But honestly, who wouldn't want to see a gentle Nathan?

After that, our relationship in real life turned deeply bizarre.

On the surface, Nathan still strutted around like he owned the school, bossing me around to do this and that.

But he'd "accidentally" leave the team's extra catered meals on my desk, claiming "even a dog wouldn't eat this."

I received a jar of imported medicated hand cream for my cracked and frostnipped hands the next day, its label peeled off, which Nathan said was junk Blake didn't want.

But I'd seen with my own eyes that he'd spent half an hour picking it out at the pharmacy the day before.

In this secret, warped relationship, I slowly began to panic.

Something was wrong. Why did my heart stutter every time I saw him?

Something was seriously wrong!

I started deliberately avoiding him.

A month before the tournament, the team went into closed-door training.

During the lunch break, I hid in the empty locker room and pulled out my tactics notebook, furiously reworking the positioning charts for the upcoming game.

I was so tired I actually fell asleep facedown on the table.

When I woke up, a familiar jacket was draped over me, and my tactics notebook was gone.

Cold sweat broke out all over me, and I bolted from the locker room.

At the end of the hallway, Tiffany was holding my notebook, blocking Nathan as he came out of the restroom.

"Nathan, actually... I never told you, but I'm the one behind that account."

Hiding around the corner, I stopped breathing.

Nathan looked at the notebook in her hands, filled with tactical diagrams in a delicate hand.

"You're... IceTyrant?" There was a seriousness in Nathan's voice, unreadable, just not very pleased.

How could that be.

This was the Master he cared about most.

Tiffany blushed and put on a shy, bashful look. "Mm... I was afraid you'd think a girl like me doesn't understand hockey, so I never dared admit it."

That notebook was packed with all my tactical workups, exactly the same as the tactics IceTyrant had given Nathan.

She must have snuck a look inside while I was asleep.

I bit my lip bloody, forcing down the urge to rush out and expose her.

I didn't want...

I didn't want Nathan to see me as a con artist who'd been playing him for a fool.

Nathan didn't take the notebook. He stared hard at Tiffany.

Nathan poured out his grievances, sobbing and sniffling."Ma'am, don't let the fancy clothes fool you. These are ten-dollar knockoffs off Wish, free shipping!""I'm actually flat broke! I bet on hockey and owe an underground casino nine hundred grand in loan-shark money! They're after me every single day, threatening to break my legs!"My brother was dumbstruck. "You... aren't you a rich kid? They said on TV you come from some big-money family!""Big money, my ass! That's an image the team cooked up!" Nathan shot to his feet, turning the tables on them, grabbed my brother by the shoulders, and shook him like mad."Buddy! Since we're all family, this nine-hundred-grand debt is partly yours too! Quick! Front me a hundred and fifty grand first! Otherwise the loan sharks are coming to break my hands tomorrow!"As he spoke, he shoved up his sleeve, baring the huge bruise on his arm left over from hockey the day before."See this? They just did this to me yesterday!"My mom went white with f

My breath caught, and my fingers went ice-cold.Seeing me go pale, Tiffany thought she'd hit a nerve and smiled all the more smugly."What, nothing to say now? Guilty conscience? Figures. What would a broke little thing like you know about a classy sport?"I couldn't spare her a thought. I shoved her aside and stumbled out of the room."I'll be right back."Ninety grand.I couldn't even scrape together a thousand dollars. Where was I supposed to find ninety grand? If they really barged into the room, what tiny scrap of dignity I had left in front of Nathan would be destroyed in one stroke.I rushed down to the lobby like a chicken with its head cut off.But the front desk, the lounge, even the parking lot outside, I searched everywhere like a madwoman, and there was no sign of my mom or brother anywhere. My heart leapt straight into my throat. Not on the first floor... had they already gone upstairs?!Cold sweat broke out as I panicked and hurried back the way I'd come.I'd just reache

"Even if you're sick of me, even if you hate me, don't gamble with your own scholarship and stipend! Aren't you the one who's always broke? You'd give up the money just to avoid me?"His shout stunned me, and my eyes stung in an instant. He ground his back teeth."Fine, don't be my girlfriend. But you have to be the team's tactical coach. If you dare walk out, I'll announce my retirement today and we all go down together."I'd thought that once he calmed down he'd coldly tell me to get lost. Instead he threw away all shame. For the whole next week, he was practically a ghost haunting me.I'd get the cheapest bowl of plain pasta at the cafeteria, and he'd sit down across from me with two plates of expensive barbecue ribs, pull all the meat off into my bowl, and gnaw the bones himself.I'd go to the library to research something, and he'd sit across from me, staring at me intently, grinning like an idiot the whole time.At my breaking point, I lowered my voice and snapped at him."Nathan

This was my reality.A family like a bottomless pit of muck, endless extortion, parents and a brother who fed on me like leeches.I looked at Nathan, radiant as the sun before me.He came from privilege, had a limitless future, and was passionate and pure. And me? I was just a broke nobody covered in mud, saddled with debt I could never pay off.If I said yes to him, I'd only drag him down into the abyss with me.I couldn't be that selfish. The cheering around us grew louder, and Nathan looked at me full of hope, the smile on his lips so painfully bright.Bit by bit, I pried away the hands cupping my face.Nathan's smile froze. "Quinn?"I took a deep breath and forced an utterly cold expression onto my face.I grabbed the spare microphone from the bench, my voice terrifyingly calm."Nathan, stop joking around."The noise of the whole arena cut off at once.Looking into his eyes, in the coldest tone, I said each word one by one."You only feel this way because I taught you a few tactics

"I did." I met Coach Dawson's murderous glare, my voice trembling but firm.Coach Dawson let out a furious laugh. "Quinn? A gofer? Nathan, are you insane? You're gambling the team's future to play games with some little girl?""She's not some little girl, she's a tactical genius." Nathan said it loudly."Coach Dawson, if we use your tactics, we lose, no question. I'll stake the C on my jersey on it: Quinn's tactics can win."Coach Dawson slammed the table. "Fine! You want to use her tactics? If you lose, the two of you are both gone!"On the day of the final, the arena was packed. The game started, and just as I'd predicted, our opponents launched a fierce attack right out of the gate.Nathan led the team in the high press, both sides clashing hard on the ice, the tension thick. The first period ended, 0 to 0.In the locker room, Coach Dawson sneered. "So this is your high press? Burning through that much energy, you'll be dead on your feet by the third period."Nathan ignored him and

I shot to my feet and slammed straight into his chin.Nathan hissed in pain, clutching his chin as he stepped back.I tried to run while I had the chance, but he grabbed the back of my collar and yanked me back."What are you running for? Master, let's have a nice talk.""So, you're IceTyrant." Nathan said it as a statement.Past caring, I threw it back at him. "Yeah, so what? You gonna hit me?"Nathan suddenly leaned in, that handsome, bronze-skinned face filling my vision."Why would I hit you? I'd sooner put you on a pedestal."He suddenly pulled a fistful of cat treats from his pocket and slapped them on the table."Bought these for your cat. There's more if it's not enough."I looked at the pile of cat treats, my eye twitching."I don't have a cat.""Then what was with the Peppa Pig?""My hand slipped!" I was about to lose it. "Nathan, what do you even want? Weren't you the one complaining I was too slow hauling gear, calling me useless?"Nathan's face reddened, a rare sight, and
