Elariana

The morning was cold and sharp, the dense forest air filling my chest with every careful breath. I felt better than I had during the night. My head no longer throbbed as badly, and the fresh bandage on my wound didn’t burn anymore. Even so, every movement felt heavy, as if my muscles were weighted with lead.

Zane sat on the other side of the fire, farther away than he had been at night, yet still close enough to watch me. He didn’t speak. He didn’t rush me. With a single brief glance, he let me know I could join them for breakfast if I wanted to. I tried to act like that choice was simple.

The men moved around us. Everyone was already eating. Steam rose from plates piled with food. Roasted meat, fresh bread, vegetables. Things I had spent years only smelling from a distance. My stomach twisted, caught between hunger and fear.

Zane eventually placed a bowl in front of me. He didn’t say a word.

He just set it down. And I couldn’t even look at it.

ZaneShe was still shaking in front of me, tears clinging to her lashes, while I slowly lowered my hand so she could see I wasn’t coming any closer. Her words, “I’ll try to trust you,” still hung in the air like something fragile and newly born, the kind of thing a single wrong move could shatter. She kept looking at me, uncertain and exhausted, fear and hope tangled together in her eyes. All I could say was, “That’s enough, Lyra. That’s really enough.”And in that moment I saw something in her for the first time that wasn’t pure terror. A faint, flickering calm. It wasn’t trust yet, not even close, but maybe it was the doorway to it. She didn’t smile. She didn’t relax completely. But she didn’t run. She didn’t scream. She didn’t flinch at every breath I took. That meant more to me than anything. Then she slowly closed her eyes. Not out of fear. Out of exhaustion. Out of relief. And out of that strange realization that maybe, for the first time in her life, someone was truly watching

Elariana The first weak light of dawn had barely filtered through the canvas of the tent when I slowly came to. The air was cool, but not unpleasant. It felt soft, as if someone were gently holding the morning back so I would not yet have to step into the world again. My eyes opened hazily, and at first I did not understand where I was. I was not lying on the ground like usual. Hard stone was not biting into my hip. Noise was not what woke me. There was a soft blanket beneath me. Warm. Clean. Faintly scented. And when I looked around, I realized it. I was in his tent. In Zane’s tent. For a moment, my blood seemed to freeze. I would have sat up if my body had obeyed, but it felt as if someone had poured air turned to lead into my limbs. I was slow, still painfully weak. The bandage across my chest lay comfortably against my skin. It did not burn, did not throb like it had yesterday. And suddenly it became clear. He had treated it. He had sat with me. He had wat

ZaneThe girl woke with a small movement at first. Her eyelashes fluttered, her breathing sped up, and then her pupils widened in sudden panic. She tore her gaze away from me as if my closeness burned. My chest tightened.“Hey… slowly,” I whispered, careful not to frighten her further. “Calm down, Lyra. I’m here.”She flinched at my touch. Yanked her hand away like she’d been bitten by a spider. Panic flooded her eyes, her breathing turned ragged, and she looked at me as if I might strike her at any second. My stomach clenched.“I’m not going to hurt you,” I said quietly. “Never.”But the depth of my alpha voice only made it worse. Her body remembered everything. Every reflex. Every old wound. Everything Kian and that bastard pack had trained into her.“Please…” she whispered, something breaking in her voice. “Don’t… don’t touch me…”Her words cut into me like a cold blade. Not because they were aimed at me, but because someone once forced her to learn them.I leaned back. Slowly, del

Night had long since settled completely over the camp, a darkness so dense it swallowed even the faint light filtering between the treetops. The fire had burned down to embers; only a few glowing coals flickered weakly in the ash, as if the forest itself wanted to lull them to sleep. The men were sunk in deep rest, only the occasional sound of a sentry shifting breaking the stillness.I, however, lay awake in my tent.My body wanted rest, but my mind was still circling the image of the girl by the fire: her trembling fingers, the silent tears, the way she ate without sound. And the word my wolf had whispered kept echoing inside me:Lyra. My beloved. The one who flinches even when I draw breath near her.Sleep was just beginning to claim me when I heard it.It wasn’t loud.It wasn’t a scream. It wasn’t a cry for help.It was a thin, weak whimper. The kind only someone hears who is listening for it. Or who is paying far too close attention. My body tensed instantly. My wolf snapped to a

ZaneAround the fire, all movement slowly died down as my people disappeared toward their tents and guard posts. The orange-red glow of the flames illuminated the trunks of the trees, and whenever the embers flared up, long, twisted shadows slid across the ground. The silence was not complete. The forest never truly is. But now the air carried a strange weight, as if every living thing had drawn in its breath and was holding it.So was I.Because she sat there in front of me.Elariana.Or, as my wolf had begun to murmur more and more often inside my head: Lyra. The meaning of the word vibrated in me: my beloved. Something I had no right to feel. And yet. This raw instinct did not ask permission.I watched as the girl slowly lifted another bite to her mouth with a trembling hand. Every movement was soaked in fear, in uncertainty, in the reflex that at any moment someone might grab her wrist, yank the bowl away, or strike her for daring to take something for herself. That instinct… that
