Scarlett POV

Lucien looked up from the stack of papers, a warm smile spreading across his face.

"What brings you to the office, Scarlett?"

As Alpha of the Crescent Moon pack, he was always buried in work.

"I just came from the event planner's. Thought I'd stop by." My voice trembled despite myself.

"You missed me, didn't you? I knew it."

He stood over and folded me into his arms.

"I...saw Anika outside."

"Oh, did you?"

I tried to find a single crack in his gaze, a hint of deceit, but there was nothing.

A cold wave of panic washed over me.

Could I really have imagined it all? Was there truly nothing between them?

Lucien brushed his chin lightly against my hair.

"One more week until the marking ceremony, Scarlett. I can hardly wait."

His embrace was warm and familiar.

For a moment, nestled in his arms, I almost believed him. I almost convinced myself I had been overthinking everything.

Then, a faint scent of a woman's perfume, not mine, wafted from his collar.

My spine went rigid.

I tilted my head, my eyes falling on his deep blue suit jacket.

There, a smudge of crimson lipstick was almost perfectly hidden.

My gaze recoiled as if burned. My breathing hitched.

"Well, I should be going..."

I rushed home and sat in the bedroom, unable to move.

The sun set and the room fell into a deep darkness. I didn't bother with the lights.

The pregnancy test stick in my hand felt like a razor blade. I'd clutched it so tightly it was digging into my palm.

I had planned to tell him the news at our marking ceremony, but now, it seemed, I didn't have to.

I gently stroked my stomach. "I can't bring you into a world like this, my love. Mama will take you far away, just the two of us."

The door opened, and a sudden flood of light made me wince.

"You're not feeling well? Why are you sitting in the dark?"

Lucien's voice was filled with a familiar concern.

He cupped my face and kissed me. I quickly tucked the pregnancy test into the pocket of my silk pajamas.

"Just tired."

For the sake of our five years together, I decided to give him one last chance.

I looked him in the eye and asked again, "Lucien, can you please fire Anika?"

He froze. His voice was no longer warm; it had a hard edge to it.

"Scarlett, you weren't there for the accident. If it weren't for Anika, you would have lost me two years ago."

My eyes stung with tears. "But you've given her so much. She has a whole new life now."

"That can't erase the scars the fire left on her body, and it can't replace the wolf she lost," he said, his voice heavy. "She can't shift anymore. I can't abandon her."

His eyes were calm, but his powerful Alpha aura slammed into me, a wave of pressure that stole my breath.

"But..."

Tears welled in my eyes. The words caught in my throat. His body heat radiated through my clothes. We were so close, yet we felt a million miles away.

"Anika is kind and sincere. There's nothing wrong with her. You're about to be the Luna of the pack. You can be a little more understanding, can't you?"

My lip trembled. All the arguments and feelings churning inside me cooled and died.

Only a single tear slid silently down my cheek.

Lucien's hand slid over my waist, brushing against the hard object in my pocket.

"What's this?" he asked, reaching in.

I quickly grabbed his hand, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"It's... a makeup brush."

While he was distracted, I slipped the pregnancy test into the nightstand drawer.

He stared at me, his thumb gently caressing my cheek.

"Scarlett, you look pale. Are you exhausted from planning the ceremony?"

The familiar concern was like a gentle knife, twisting in my heart.

I looked him in the eye, my voice choked with emotion.

"Lucien, I told you before. If you fall out of love with me, just tell me. I won't cling to you. But if you lie to me, I'll leave you forever."

He smiled and ran his hand through my hair.

"Don't be silly. You're just overtired. I'm not going anywhere tonight. I'll stay right here with you."

I rested my head against his chest, my mind a jumble of tangled thoughts.

He was so perfect. Was I just overthinking things?

But then, the faint, lingering scent of perfume and Anika's triumphant smirk slashed at my heart, over and over again.

His phone rang, interrupting my thoughts.

The moment he answered, I could feel his tension.

"Don't worry, I'm on my way."

He kissed me on the cheek.

"Anika drank too much at the banquet. She's throwing up, and I need to go help her."

On instinct, I clutched his sleeve. "But you said you weren't going anywhere tonight..."

He gently squeezed my chin and smiled. "I'll be back soon."

His powerful frame was gone in an instant.

My tears finally fell, a silent, hot stream.

I stroked my stomach. "Baby, Mama's going to take you somewhere there are no lies, my love. Just the two of us."

Scarlett POVAnika got out of the car, her face a mask of practiced vulnerability. "Lucien, just let Scarlett leave. She doesn't love you anymore anyway."Lucien's expression iced over. He thrust my phone at her, the screen glowing with those damning photos."Tell me this wasn't your doing."Her shoulders jerked, and she dropped her gaze."I... I just loved you too much. I didn't mean any harm. Please don't blame me." The tears began to fall again.Lucien's brows pinched, irritation flashing beneath the surface."Anika, I have told you a hundred times. there can never be anything between us. The only one I love is Scarlett.""You saved my life, and I have always been grateful, swearing to take care of you forever."" ut now you've shattered the image of the woman I owed my life to. You hurt the one person I cannot live without."A dangerous fire sparked in Anika's eyes. "Why does she get everything? I've loved you for so long, trying so hard to get close to you. Can't you feel that

  • Chains of Gratitude   Chapter 8

Scarlett POVLucien left in a blur. I didn't know whether to feel happy or not. The fact that he had spent months looking for me meant he cared, but his failure to grasp the true nature of the thorn in our relationship was a crushing disappointment. And now, my fragile peace had shattered again. After a sleepless night and a day filled with gnawing anxiety, I decided to move. A small regret gnawed at me: I had bought too many things these past months. Tiny clothes, little toys for the pup...all too adorable to leave behind. I packed a few boxes and, despite my huge, cumbersome belly, managed to haul them out to the car one by one. I was exhausted and out of breath. Just as I was dragging a particularly large box to the car, the screech of tires sliced through the air.In the next heartbeat, strong arms yanked me against a body I knew too well."Scarlett, what the hell are you doing? Running again?!" Lucien's voice was hoarse with panic, as if terrified of losing something pre

  • Chains of Gratitude   Chapter 7

Lucien POVI left Scarlett, the bittersweet joy of our reunion replaced by a heartache that hit twice as hard. My mind was consumed by her words: "You always pleased her at my expense." The sting of that truth followed me all the way back to the hospital. When I entered the room, Anika's expression was calm, her demeanor relaxed. She looked nothing like the frantic, heartbroken woman on the phone. "Lucien, you came back," she said, a faint, almost-there smile on her face. "I was so worried the pup wouldn't make it."A knot of discomfort twisted in my stomach. For the first time, I saw that the vulnerability she so often showed me might just be a performance.I fixed my gaze on her. "I found Scarlett. And I think we need to re-evaluate our relationship."Her face froze. Her eyes went wide."Anika," I began, my voice flat, "I've never forgotten what you've done for me, your courage, your sacrifice, and the pain you went through to save me.""No amount of money or material things

  • Chains of Gratitude   Chapter 6

Scarlett POVI sat on a park bench, soaking in the late afternoon sun, watching children play in the distance. My pup had grown so big. I was just two months from welcoming him into the world. I stroked my rounded stomach, feeling the little pup tumble inside, and enjoyed the quiet peace of this new town.A tall figure came into view, walking slowly, as if unsure of himself, or perhaps afraid of startling me. My first thought was, Oh no, he found me. But then I realized there was no reason to be afraid. I had to face him sooner or later. So, I just watched him, unafraid. When Lucien was close enough, I saw the wave of emotion on his face. His eyes were red-rimmed and brimming with tears. "Scarlett... I've been looking for you for so long." His voice was hoarse. "How could you leave me? We promised we'd be together, always. Have you forgotten?"He looked gaunt, his handsome face thin and drawn. His powerful Alpha aura, usually so overwhelming, was now so faint it was barely a w

  • Chains of Gratitude   Chapter 5

Lucien POVThe moment I lifted the veil, my breath stalled. It wasn't Scarlett standing there. My heart, which had been racing with anticipation, slammed to a halt.Anika gazed at me with eyes full of light, brimming with tenderness I could not return. Cold crept down my spine.Where the hell was Scarlett?I seized Anika's arm, the question tearing out of me louder than I intended. Her startled smile collapsed into panic and fear. She swayed beneath my grip, and only then did I realize I was crushing her bones."I didn't mean to hurt you," I muttered, loosening my hold.I left her standing there, bolted into my car, and drove like a man possessed. I had no idea how many red lights I tore through before I reached home.I burst through the front door. The house was unnaturally quiet. Scarlett didn't come to greet me. Not a sound stirred. My chest cinched tight, breath shaking as I called into the quiet."Scarlett? I'm here for you. Come out."My voice echoed back at me, but no one

  • Chains of Gratitude   Chapter 4

Scarlett POVMaybe it was a side effect of my heartache, but in the days that followed, I felt utterly exhausted, too tired to eat, and found myself throwing up again and again. Lucien, his face full of concern, begged me to go to the hospital. But I refused. A trip to the emergency room would immediately expose the pup's existence, and I couldn't let that happen."It's probably just the shock from the champagne tower," I offered as an excuse. "It really scared me. All I see when I close my eyes are glass shards."He looked at me for a long moment, then pulled me into a tight embrace. "I'm so sorry, Scarlett. I didn't take care of you that night."I managed a faint smile. I fixed his tie and buttoned his jacket, then gently nudged him out the door. "You should go to the office. I can take care of myself."He shook his head, a look of helplessness on his face, and pulled me into another hug, refusing to let go. "You have to eat something, you're getting so thin. If you don't fee
