Closer to the Truth

RHEA’S POV

I groaned as consciousness began to seep back into me, dragging along a pounding headache that felt like a hammer against my skull. My hand flew to my forehead, trying to massage the ache away, but it did little to help. This was from all that drink I had consumed last night, in an attempt to drown the emotions Miles had so rudely stirred up after all these years.

Wait. Last night… What happened?

The last thing I remembered was Miles tossing me over his shoulder and leaving the venue. My eyes flew open, and I instantly knew I had not slept on my bed. Miles’ scent immediately wafted into my nostrils, and my anger flared. I knew he wasn’t a pervert who would sleep with me when I was drunk, but I instinctively glanced down at my body under the blanket. Everything checked. My clothes were still intact.

My heart almost leaped out of my mouth when my eyes darted around the room and landed on him. Miles. He sat a few feet away, wearing a white tank top th

The Lies That Kept Us Apart RHEA’S POV "Rhea, all of this has been one big misunderstanding," Miles said, stepping closer, his hand reaching out like he wanted to touch me. Instinctively, I stepped back. “It kept us apart for seven whole years.” I shook my head, snapping out of the shock that had momentarily frozen me. "No. No misunderstanding kept us apart, Alpha. You served me divorce papers. You wanted to marry Roxy. You married her." Miles shook his head, and that same vulnerability I had seen last night flickered across his face. "I never married Roxy, Rhea. I never even planned to. It was always you." A bitter laugh escaped me. “Alpha Mondragon, do not say things you do not mean,” I said firmly, ignoring the emotion that was welling inside me. “You were very clear about not wanting me in your life. You said I was the worst thing that ever happened to you.” Miles' head dipped low, his jaw clenched, his body tense. Silence stretched between us for a few seconds before he exha

Lies, Deals, and Deception YURI’S POV I paced the length of Zane’s living room, my heart hammering against my ribs. I had been calling Rhea since last night, and she had refused to answer even once. It was driving me insane. Everything about this situation was driving me crazy. Miles. Why the hell did he have to come back here? I should have been more vigilant. I should have kept Rhea close, made sure Miles never got the chance to see her. But I knew she wouldn’t appreciate me hovering around all the time. She was stubborn like that. And besides, I had my own pack to run. My elders were already growing restless, questioning my frequent absences. Rumors of rogue attacks were spreading fast, and I needed to be there to handle it. I don’t know why those forsaken rogues would not accept defeat. But what stung the most was Zane. I thought he was my friend. I clenched my jaw, my fingers curling into fists as I recalled what his beta had told me over the phone. Miles had made Zane a

Fists, Fury, and a Mother’s WrathYURI’S POV The drive to the Thompsons’ was longer than usual, or maybe it just felt that way because of the thoughts crashing through my head. My grip on the steering wheel tightened. I knew what I was doing was wrong, but I had convinced myself it was for Rhea’s good. For Sekani’s. For all of us. I pulled up in front of the Thompsons' house and exhaled slowly, forcing my nerves into check. There were no other cars parked outside. Good. That meant Rhea or Miles wasn’t here yet. I stepped out, straightened my shirt, and strode up the steps, keeping my expression neutral. Before I could even knock, Mrs. Thompson opened the door, greeting me with a warm smile. “Alpha Yuri, come in.” Sekani ran up the hallway the moment he saw me, his small feet padding against the wooden floor. "Uncle Yuri!" His bright eyes gleamed with excitement as he threw himself into my arms. I crouched, ruffling his hair. “Hey, champ. How’s my little warrior doing?” "I'm good!

The First MeetingRHEA’S POV At first, I was frozen in disbelief. Then, like a slow-rising flood, the fury hit me. Full-blown, pulse-racing, lip-twitching anger. Anger at his tone. Anger at that possessive glare. Anger at those two stupid words—my female. I wasn’t anyone’s. I didn’t belong to any man anymore, not even the father of my child. And the audacity of these two standing here, thinking they could decide what was best for me, made my skin crawl. It was my damn life, not theirs! Then I raised my chin and met Miles’ heated stare. “First of all,” I snapped, my voice crackled like fire waiting to catch. “I am not your female.” I saw his jaw tighten, but it didn't stop me. “And secondly, you don’t get to speak to me that way. Ever.” He laughed, bitter and cold, like he couldn’t believe I just said that. His hand dragged roughly through his already tousled hair, and the frustration in his body language was radiating like heat. “I don’t give a shit what you are to me right now,”

Where Silence ScreamsRHEA’S POV I stood behind the couch, watching the exchange, my heart clenching in my chest. Sekani had always been bright and sensitive. He was loyal to a fault. And today, I could see that his heart was hurting in ways he didn’t yet understand, seeing the tension between Yuri and me. He didn’t know the truth. Not yet. But even his little heart knew that something wasn’t right. Miles looked up at me after Sekani’s frosty reaction. His eyes burned with fury, but underneath that rage, I caught glimpses of something else, confusion… pain… maybe even betrayal. It was hard to tell. He looked like a man trying to hold someone responsible, someone to lash out at, but there wasn’t one person to blame. We were all in this mess together. Even me. And honestly, with everything I learnt, I didn't know what to feel. But despite all the damage done, all the scars and lies, I was sure of one thing. My heart didn’t belong to Miles anymore. And as much as that should’ve

A Moment Too Late.RHEA’S POV I tucked Sekani into bed, gently brushing his curls back and planting a soft kiss on his forehead. He mumbled something in his sleep, clutching his stuffed lion tighter. My chest squeezed. I watched him for a moment longer, letting the calm of his sleeping face soothe the ache in my heart, then quietly stepped out of his room, switching off the light.Back in the living room, Miles stood in the center like he didn’t quite know what to do with himself. His shoulders were slightly hunched, hands tucked into his pockets, eyes scanning the space like he was looking for something, maybe a piece of the life he had missed. I took a slow breath, steadying myself for the conversation I knew we couldn’t avoid tonight. The staff were still setting the dining table. I wasn’t hungry, but I needed the distraction. I needed something to focus on. I waved the staff off with a small gesture and walked toward the table myself. I motioned for Miles to join me at the table.

The Boy, the Rain, and the TruthMILES' POV I stood there in the dark, staring at the door she slammed in my face. For a moment, I didn’t move. I just stood there burning. My emotions spun through me like a broken compass: frustration, guilt, confusion… but above all, anger. Sharp, bitter anger. Because no matter how much I might be at fault, I was still an Alpha with pride the size of the entire Crimson Peak Pack. And being dismissed like trash wasn't exactly something I was used to. But I also knew things would not always go my way. If I wanted my family back, if I truly wanted to fix this, I had to shut my ego up, swallow it up, and drink water. So, I turned and walked away from the door, fists clenched, jaw locked tight. As I stepped into the yard, I patted down my pockets, searching for my phone. Nothing. I paused, frowning, glancing back at Rhea’s house, thinking maybe I had left it inside. But then I remembered I hadn’t touched it all evening. Shit. I must’ve forgotten it at

Held Between Breath and Silence Rhea's POV "Get me dry towels, warm blankets, and a heating pad, quickly!" I snapped, barely keeping the panic out of my voice as we carried Miles' semi-conscious body into the house and the guest room on the ground floor. My pulse thundered in my ears, and my jaw clenched. I muttered a curse under my breath as the staff scrambled to obey. His skin looked so pale, and his lips had that faint bluish tint that made my gut twist painfully. He didn’t just look cold. He looked… wrong. Ms. Lucy rushed back with an armful of towels, the thickest blanket in the house, and the heating pad. She handed them to me with shaky hands. Sekani stood by the doorway, watching with wide, confused eyes. One of the younger staff had already grabbed a mop, quietly soaking up the puddle of water dripping from Miles’ drenched clothes to prevent anyone from slipping. "Mummy? What's going on?" Sekani asked softly. I turned to him, crouching just enough to smooth his curls

MILES’ POV My boots echoed off the concrete walls, the sharp, deliberate rhythm of my fury. The hallway stank of damp cement, rust, and sweat. A single bulb flickered overhead, throwing shadows across the narrow passage as Evans and Rico flanked me on either side. "Alpha," Evans began cautiously, voice low, "it’s been weeks. Word of Yuri’s disappearance has spread across multiple packs. He's still an Alpha, not a rogue. This could get—" "He acted like a rogue," I snapped without slowing my pace. "He doesn’t get to wear that title in my presence. He ran off with my woman. Hid my son. Lied to my fucking face for years.” Rico sighed beside me. “I’m not defending him, Alpha. I’m just saying—you’ve already won. Sekani loves you. He trusts you. He looks up to you like you put the moon in the sky. What else is there to prove?” I stopped in front of the steel door and turned, my voice quiet but lethal. “What about Rhea, Rico?” Rico and Evans exchanged a look, but I didn’t give them time

Storms Come in White CoatsRHEA'S POVThe morning meeting was supposed to be routine. We had just concluded rounds and gathered in the conference room for the weekly neuro case debrief. A handful of nurses, residents, and specialists sat around the long table. Dr. Mario stood at the head, flipping through the patient files with a clinical detachment that could freeze blood.I sat near the middle, trying not to feel too visible. I had submitted the case summary from the Neuro ICU late last night, working extra hours to ensure everything was accurate. I knew it was thorough. I knew it was clean. Knowing Dr. Mario proved a difficult nut to crack, I had taken my time to go through it. I would never give her any reason to think she was right about me. I had tried to remain as quiet as possible since she resumed. If only horses were wishes.Dr. Mario suddenly snapped the file shut, her eyes scanning the room before settling on me. “Nurse Marston,” she said in a sharp and clear voice. “Is th

A Wrong Kind of ComfortMILES POV I gulped down another shot of whiskey, eyes glassy, staring at nothing. It had been almost a week since I left Crimson Peak and returned to Snowfall, but the ache in my chest hadn’t dulled, not even a little. Rhea’s words still played on a loop in my head, like a song I couldn’t turn off. 'I'm sorry, Miles. I don't. I don't love you anymore.' So this was what it felt like. This must have been what she went through back then, those long nights I told her I didn’t love her. Now I was the one suffocating in it. And yet, somehow, she survived it. She lived through the same agony I was crumbling under. I poured myself another shot. Then another. Sekani would be coming for the weekend soon, and I needed to pull myself together. I couldn’t be a shitty father to my son. But even that thought wasn’t enough to stop me. The bottle in my hand was more familiar than comfort. News about Sekani had spread through the pack like wildfire. My mother, as expect

Not Everyone Gets a Happy Ending RHEA'S POV An uncomfortable silence stretched between us after that confession. Miles still looked stunned, like he hadn’t fully processed it yet. But I kept telling myself not to feel bad. I did the right thing. Not everyone gets a happily ever after. I stared down at my hands, twitching my fingers restlessly. It took only a few moments before he regained control. When he did, his expression hardened, jaw tight, unreadable. Just like I had always known him to be. This was the part of Miles I had married. Business mode. He straightened up as we moved into talking about Sekani’s welfare. He said he would visit on weekends when Sekani wasn’t in school, and that Sekani would spend the full weekend with him. He also mentioned dropping by during the week if his schedule allowed, especially now that his project in Crimson Peak was still running. He said he would be around more often in these early days. I nodded along. I had no issues with that, as long

Fate Don’t Wait MILES' POV Even before full consciousness returned, my chest was already pounding. My wolf stirred first, restless, growling with excitement like it knew something I didn’t. Then came the warmth, a quiet, familiar kind that wrapped around me and soaked into my skin. The soft scent that followed was unmistakably Rhea's. My eyes fluttered open. Confusion hit first. My brows pulled together at the sight of the unfamiliar bedroom ceiling. Where the hell—? Then it all came rushing back. The storm. Sekani. The singing. Her voice. And suddenly, I realized I wasn’t alone. There was a weight on my chest. A soft, delicate kind. I turned slowly and carefully. And every muscle in my body locked up when I saw her. Rhea was lying against me. Her head was resting on my chest; her hand draped across me. My damn heart nearly jumped out of my throat. She wasn’t just beside me. She was in my arms. I froze. No sign of Sekani anywhere. How the hell did this happen? Before I cou

  • Chasing Redemption   83. A Song for the Broken

A Song for the Broken RHEA'S POV I walked back into my bedroom and climbed into bed, refusing to let my thoughts drift anywhere dangerous. I lay there, my hands folded across my chest, my eyes fixed on the blank ceiling. In my head, I started running through the list of my patients at the hospital, thinking about their recovery processes, anything to keep my mind from wandering to Miles and his presence here. I had been off work for three days now, and tomorrow, I would finally return to face a new head doctor. I was oddly looking forward to meeting Dr. Mario. With my contract at Crimson General ending in six months, I needed to win him over. I needed the recommendation of a sitting head doctor from my previous establishment to be eligible for a license to run an independent clinic of my own. Somewhere between worrying about licenses and picturing what Dr. Mario’s face would look like, I must have drifted off. Because the next thing I heard was Sekani’s small voice, tugging me bac

  • Chasing Redemption    82. Drawing Boundaries, Breaking Hearts

Drawing Boundaries, Breaking Hearts RHEA'S POV I was still dumbfounded by Miles' words that day. And it had been a long time since anyone left me that speechless. I can’t even explain why my brain stalled. Maybe it was how sudden it all came crashing down on me. Maybe it was the leftover emotions stirred up by his kind gestures: the lunch delivery, the videos of Sekani smiling, the quiet way he was trying to make up for lost time. It was nothing. And I was determined to draw the lines again. We had agreed to co-parent, not drift back into whatever dangerous territory that used to be between us. And we hadn't spoken in days. I only let him pick and drop Sekani off to school, and I made sure I wasn't the one handing Sekani over to him. I have no feelings for him anymore. For crying out loud, I moved on already. And I hoped, for his sake, that he would stop chasing after feelings that would only end up hurting him. Sekani was the only bond left between us. And it needed to stay that

MILES POVWeekend rolled quickly, soon, it was time to take Sekani back to Rhea. I didn't want to part with him. The weekend I spent with h was one of the best weekends of my life.Although I hated to be apart from Sekani...and his mother, I was happy that at least I had bonded with my son. I also got a invitation for dinner from Rhea. She had called me late afternoon after I had that lunch taken to her. She had been very grateful and for the first time since we met again we had a lengthy conversation over the phone. My leg had healed over the weekend, and I didn't need a crutch again. Who wouldn't heal after almost getting everything you wanted? We drove back to Rhea's residence after lunch. When we arrived, Rhea was waiting for us on a porch. She was a casual gown that stopped just above her knees and her now blonde hair flew in the air. Sekani barely waited for the car engine to die before he jumped down, running towards Rhea. I smiled, wore my shades and reached behind to get th

I had not rested since Friday. Well, that was the result of assisting in two major brain-cracking surgery, one of them was a stand in. Thank goodness it was all over. I heaved a breath of relief and washed my face with the water running from the tap. Now, all I needed was to eat, get a massage if possible and take a long required nap.I haven't spoken to Sekani or Miles since yesterday. I wipes my face and hands and started to leave the bathroom. Although I trust Sekani with Miles, I felt bad that I had not spoken to him since yesterday. That's not like me. "Sekani. Oh, my boy. I hope he is getting along with his father already," I muttered.
