Four weeks had passed since the warehouse explosion. Four weeks since Shaw disappeared into the night like smoke. Four weeks of trying to get back to normal life.

The Daily Buzz newsroom buzzed with its usual energy, but today felt different. Maybe it was because of the two large men in dark suits who stood near the elevator. Maybe it was because my colleagues kept shooting glances in my direction.

"Must be nice," Sarah whispered as she walked past my desk. She was the entertainment reporter, always hungry for gossip. "Having your own personal bodyguards."

I pretended not to hear her. I kept typing my article about the city's new homeless shelter program. It was important work, but I knew what everyone was really thinking about. They were thinking about the billionaire boyfriend who insisted I needed protection even though Shaw was gone.

"Lexi," my editor Frank called from his office. "Can I see you for a minute?"

I saved my work and walked across the newsroom. The bodyguards stayed w

I hung up the phone after talking to Giselle and sat at my desk shaking. Her words kept echoing in my mind. What did I really know about Lucian? Was our relationship built on something real or was it all strategy? No. I refused to let her poison my thoughts. I knew Lucian. I had seen him at his most vulnerable. I had watched him risk his life to save strangers. That wasn't strategy. That was character. But still, a small voice in the back of my mind whispered doubts.Sarah appeared at my desk with a cup of coffee. "You okay? You look like you've seen a ghost.""I'm fine. Just a difficult phone call.""Was it about the break in? Frank told everyone about the security footage.""Something like that."Sarah lowered her voice. "Lexi, there are rumors going around. People are saying that someone is targeting you because of Lucian Cross. Is that true?"I looked around the newsroom. Several of my coworkers were watching us. Some were pretending not to listen, but I could see them leaning clo

I was in the middle of a board meeting when Marcus texted me. "Giselle Laurent just called Miss Carter. We have the recording."I excused myself from the conference room and called Marcus immediately."Play it for me."I listened to the entire conversation between Lexi and Giselle. My blood boiled with every word that came out of Giselle's mouth. She was trying to poison Lexi's mind against me. She was planting seeds of doubt about my feelings, about my motives, about everything we had built together."Where is Lexi now?" I asked when the recording ended."Still at the Daily Buzz. But sir, there's something else. Miss Laurent is on the move. She left the medical facility an hour ago.""Where did she go?""To a private airport. Her grandfather's jet is waiting there.""Is she leaving the country?""We don't think so. Our sources say she's just picking up some luggage. Expensive luggage. Louis Vuitton, Chanel, the works. Looks like she's planning an extended stay.""An extended stay whe

The three men in dark suits were still standing outside the Daily Buzz building when I arrived for work. They weren't Lucian's usual security team. These men looked different. Harder. More dangerous.I walked past them quickly and hurried into the building. One of them spoke into his phone as I passed. I couldn't hear what he said, but something about his tone made me nervous."Morning, Lexi," Sarah called out as I walked into the newsroom. "Looks like you picked up some new admirers."I ignored her and went to my desk. My computer was already logged in, which was strange. I always shut it down completely when I left work."Frank wants to see you," said Mike, one of the other reporters. "He's been asking about you since he got in."I walked to Frank’s office. He was on the phone, but he waved me in and pointed to a chair."No, I understand your concerns," he was saying to whoever was on the other end. "But I can't make editorial decisions based on pressure from outside sources."He hu

The call came at 7:30 in the morning while I was drinking my first cup of coffee. I was standing in my penthouse kitchen, looking out at the city as it woke up. The sun was just starting to touch the tops of the skyscrapers. It was going to be a beautiful day."Mr. Cross?" It was Gregory, my assistant. He sounded upset."What is it?""Sir, I have some bad news. Giselle Laurent was released from prison yesterday."I nearly dropped my coffee mug. "What do you mean released? She was sentenced to five years for fraud and embezzlement.""Yes sir. But her lawyers filed a medical appeal. They claim she has a brain hemorrhage that requires immediate treatment not available in the prison medical facility.""A brain hemorrhage? Since when?""The medical report was filed three days ago. Her lawyers moved very quickly through the courts. They got an emergency release order."I set my coffee down on the marble counter and walked to the window. The beautiful morning suddenly felt less bright."Greg

Four weeks had passed since the warehouse explosion. Four weeks since Shaw disappeared into the night like smoke. Four weeks of trying to return to normal life. The Metropolitan Club's dining room hummed with the quiet conversations of powerful people. Crystal glasses clinked against fine china. Servers in white jackets moved silently between tables. This was where the real business of the city got done, over expensive meals and carefully worded agreements.I checked my watch. 2:15. The lunch meeting with Senator Williams and his committee had run longer than expected. They wanted Cross Industries to fund a new technology initiative. I wanted assurances that the technology would be used responsibly. We were still negotiating."Mr. Cross?" My assistant David appeared at my elbow. He had been waiting patiently near the bar. "Your car is ready whenever you are.""Thank you. Any word from Marcus about Lexi?""She finished her interview with the mayor's office. They're escorting her back t
