Nerissa's POV

Rousseau was already at the office when I arrived, two cups of coffee on the desk, one of them clearly meant for me.

"You look like you slept even less than I did," he said.

"Court does that."

"Court does that." He slid the folder across the desk, the same careful stack of pages he'd been building for weeks, thinner now that the pieces relevant to Talia had been pulled out and handed to the prosecutor. "We got the win. Now we need to talk about what's left."

"Rousset."

"Rousset."

Nerissa's POVMy phone rang just after nine, a number I didn't recognize.I almost let it go to voicemail. Something made me pick up instead."Ms. Vane." The voice was calm, cultured. "I thought it was time we spoke directly."I went very still. Across the desk, Lucien looked up sharply at whatever had shifted in my face."Rousset.""You've been busy," he said, almost pleasant about it. "Digging through my accounts, handing old case files to lawyers, calling contacts I'd have preferred stayed quiet. I thought it only fair to return the attention.""How did you get this number.""I make it my business to know how to reach people who've become interesting to me. You should be flattered. I don't extend the courtesy often."I put the call on speaker, silent, so Lucien could hear every word without me having to repeat it later."Say what you called to say.""Straight to business. I respect that." A faint sound, like ice shifting in a glass. "You're circling something that took me twenty ye

  • Chasing The Wife He Discarded   Ch: 93 He's Not Waiting Either.

Lysander's POVDesmond called before I'd even finished my coffee."We have a problem.""What kind.""The kind where three of our shipping contracts got cancelled overnight, all citing the same vague clause about 'unforeseen reliability concerns.'" Papers shuffled fast on his end. "Two of them were with partners we've worked with for over a decade. This isn't a coincidence, Lysander."I sat up straighter. "Rousset.""I can't prove that yet. But the timing's hard to ignore, given you just handed Rousseau your father's old case files on tracing exactly this kind of network."My stomach tightened. "He knows I'm helping.""If this is him, then yes, he knows. And he's telling you he doesn't like it."I hung up and called Rousseau immediately, pacing my kitchen while it rang."Three contracts," I said, the second he picked up. "Cancelled overnight, no real explanation. Desmond thinks it's Rousset sending a message."Rousseau was quiet a moment. "That would track. Priya flagged unusual accoun

  • Chasing The Wife He Discarded   Ch: 92 What Nicole Asked.

Nerissa's POV Saturday mornings were supposed to be easy. Pancakes, cartoons, Nicole narrating her own breakfast like it was a cooking show nobody had asked her to host. "And now we add the syrup," she announced to an invisible camera, drowning her plate in it. "Lots and lots of syrup, because Mommy's not watching closely enough to stop me." "I'm watching." "Not closely enough." Nicholas ate his in silence, more interested in the book propped against the juice carton than anything happening around him. Lucien came down halfway through, kissed the top of Nicole's head, and poured himself coffee before sitting across from me. "Sleep okay?" he asked. "Better than the last few weeks." "That's a low bar." "I'll take it anyway." Nicole set her fork down with the particular gravity of a five year old about to say something she'd clearly been sitting on for a while. "Is Lysander coming today?" The kitchen went quiet enough that I heard Nicholas actually look up from h

Lysander's POVMy mother hadn't called me in four days. That was longer than she'd ever gone without calling me, even during the worst stretches of the divorce, even after the gala photos leaked.I drove out to the house instead of waiting for her to break first. My father answered the door himself, which told me something before he even said a word. He looked older than he had a month ago, gray at the temples that hadn't been there before, or maybe I just hadn't noticed until now."She's in the garden," he said, not quite meeting my eyes.I found my mother sitting on the bench near the roses, hands folded in her lap, staring at nothing in particular."Mom."She didn't look up right away. "I keep thinking about the day she was born. Talia. Your father was so nervous he dropped the camera twice trying to get a picture.""Mom""I don't know how to hold both things at once," she said, finally turning to look at me, eyes red and exhausted. "I love my daughter. I also watched a judge call

"We got the win. Now we need to talk about what's left.""Rousset.""Rousset." He said the name like it tasted bad. "Seraphina's silence protects him. Right now, on paper, Julien Rousset is a man who's never been formally connected to a single thing that's happened in the last five years.""That's not acceptable.""I know it's not. I'm just telling you where we actually stand." He leaned back, tired in the particular way of a man who'd been carrying this fight almost as long as I had. "Criminal cooperation is off the table without Seraphina. That leaves civil.""Civil agai

  • Chasing The Wife He Discarded   Ch: 89 There is nothing to start.

Nerissa's POVThe hallway had mostly emptied by then, just a few stragglers from the gallery still lingering near the doors, talking low about a verdict that would probably make the evening news before either of us made it home."Nerissa," he said again, quieter this time."What."He looked like a man working up the nerve to jump into cold water, weighing it, half convinced it was a bad idea and doing it anyway."Can I ask you something?""You can ask."He took a breath, like he'd been holding this question for long and only now found the nerve to actually say it out loud. "Are they mine? Nicholas and Nicole. I need to know.""That's not a conversation we're having in a courthouse hallway," I said."Nerissa""You testified in court today. That was the right thing to do, and I meant it when I said thank you for it. It doesn't earn you an answer to that question." I kept my voice even, though something in me had gone tight the second he'd actually said it out loud instead of just implyi
