Another six months…

Walking into James felt surreal, like stepping into a memory that didn’t belong to her anymore. Awkward tension hung in the air as his eyes locked onto her and Hunter.

“Hi, Chloe. How’ve you been?” He took a step forward, and Hunter mirrored him, almost instinctively. “What, is he your bodyguard now?”

She gave him a tired smile. “I’m fine. How about you?”

“Wow, already moved on, huh?”

“You don’t get to judge me, James. You don’t know a damn thing about me.”

“I know you’re not human, that you paired up with a shapeshifter, and now…” He glanced at Hunter, sizing him up. “This.”

Chloe froze, a cold realization creeping over her. Did he have something to do with Liam’s death? No, that couldn’t be. “How would you even…”

“I’ve known since you were a kid. That’s why I protected you. He was going to kill you.” He let out a shaky laugh, like the words were too heavy to hold.

“What? Who? Tell me, James. Was it you?”

“I’d never hurt you. It stings that you’d even think that.”
