Mistress

When I find out my husband is cheating on me, I don't cry. My pride won't let me waste a single tear on a man who isn't worth it. Instead, I crash a stranger's funeral so I can cry my eyes out over someone else's memorial photo. I'm sobbing so hard I'm shaking when the widow suddenly shoves a million-dollar check into my hand. "Take the money and get lost. Don't think you can worm your way into my family just because he's dead." I stare down at the check. Suddenly, being the other woman doesn't seem so bad. At least she gets paid. Meanwhile, I'm the wife who gets cheated on and humiliated, and somehow I'm still the one expected to step aside for the other woman. I'm about to leave when an arm suddenly blocks my way. The dead man's son is a tall, handsome college student. He leans down, looks me straight in the eye, and sneers, "You fraud. You're crying your eyes out over my dad, but you can't even get his name right." Caught, I take a step back. He plucks the check from my hand and leans close to my ear. "You want the million dollars? Fine. Then play along with me and help me piss off my mom. She's the one who actually cheated on my dad."

Chapter 1
I looked up at the man. He was tall and broad-shouldered, dressed in a black suit with a white flower pinned to his lapel. He looked young. His gaze swept over me, traveling from my heels all the way up to the ring on my finger."You're married?""Just died.""Your husband?""My love life."I pulled off my wedding ring and stuffed it into my purse. The corner of his mouth twitched."I'm Kyle Hunt. 24. Second-year grad student."I couldn't help taking another look at him.24? That made him six years younger than me.He had firm, youthful skin, broad shoulders, and a lean waist. For a second, I almost understood Adrian Zeller. There really was something exciting about someone new.The difference was, Adrian had gone for Claire Bailey, the kind of cheap fake who threw herself at married men.Kyle, though, was the real deal, and just looking at him made my mouth water.I looked away. "So what do I have to do?"Kyle waved the check between his fingers. "My family's having di

Chapter 2
Adrian blocked my path at the entrance to the funeral home. "Taylor, did you follow me here?""You really think the world revolves around you, don't you? If I were going to stalk someone, I'd stalk Kyle."Claire's gaze shifted to Kyle, and she gave him a long once-over.She'd always had a thing for younger men. Adrian must've been what happened when she got desperate enough to stop being picky."Taylor, who's this?" she asked."Why do you care?"She bit her lip. "I'm just worried you might be getting played. You're so much older than he is."I laughed. "He's only six years younger than me, and that's a big age gap? You're 11 years younger than Adrian. So what does that make dating him, charity work?"People nearby were already starting to look our way.Claire's eyes immediately reddened.Adrian was a sucker for that routine. He stepped in front of her and shielded her behind him. "Taylor, stop picking on her."My stomach turned. We'd been married for five years, and even wh

At 7:00 pm, I walked into Hunt Estate with my arm linked through Kyle's.Georgia Lynch sat in the place of honor in the living room. She had changed into a long black velvet dress, and there wasn't a trace of grief over her husband's death left on her face.A man in his 40s sat beside her. He was in good shape and wore a gold watch on his left wrist.Kyle murmured, "Kevin Tuttle. My mom's personal trainer."I almost laughed. "Your mom has good taste.""Stay in character.""Got it."I immediately put on a suitably mournful expression. The moment Georgia saw me, she brought her teacup down hard. "Why did you bring her here?""Ms. Reyes said Dad left a message for her."Kyle pulled out a chair for me, and I sat down.Everyone in the room immediately perked up.People could skip a meal, but nobody could resist juicy gossip. A scandal at a rich family's funeral was even better. One story like that could keep the whole neighborhood talking for six months.Georgia stared at me. "

When I got home, I found that the door code had been changed. The condo was mine. Mom had left it to me, and it had been paid for in full before I got married.Yet there I was, the owner, locked out of my own home. I could hear a woman laughing inside.I rang the doorbell.Claire opened the door wearing my nightgown. The second she saw me, she made a point of rubbing her stomach."Taylor, why didn't you say you were coming back?"My eyes dropped to the silk nightgown she had on. I'd bought it for my birthday last year and had been saving it ever since. Apparently, Claire had decided to break it in for me."Take it off.""What?""I said, take off my nightgown."Adrian came out of the bedroom. "Taylor, don't give her a hard time. She's pregnant.""This is my home.""We're still married. It's my home too.""What about her?""She's carrying my child. She needs someone to take care of her."My mother-in-law, Maureen Manning, leaned out of the kitchen. "I'm the one who told Cl

The livestream went viral. By the time I opened the flower shop the next morning, dozens of people were already lined up outside. One woman grabbed my hand and insisted I recommend something she could send to the other woman."A cactus," I said."Why?""Prickly, impossible to kill, and perfect for someone who doesn't know when she's not wanted."She bought ten of them on the spot. That gave me an idea. I put together a "Fresh Start" bouquet with shredded photos of cheating exes and priced it at 100 dollars.By the end of the day, I'd sold 800.I'd been doing floral design for five years. I had the skills, the customers, and a style that was all my own.But Adrian had always said a woman didn't need more than a little business of her own. He didn't want me putting myself out there. He kept everything I was capable of confined to one tiny shop, then used my profits to bankroll his company and support Maureen and Claire. Now that no one was holding me back, I finally realized I

Claire stopped crying. Nothing tested a fake relationship faster than money."Adrian's company is in the middle of a funding round. He can't sell right now.""That's your problem," I said."If you don't drop the lawsuit, I'll show up at your flower shop.""Be my guest.""I'll make sure everyone knows you can't have kids and you're still clinging to a husband who doesn't love you anymore!""Come tomorrow at 2:00 pm.""Why?""Afternoons are busy. You might as well help me boost sales."I hung up.Kyle looked up at me. "She's going to make a scene tomorrow.""I know.""Want me to come?"I looked at him. "No. Putting someone like her in her place is more satisfying when I do it myself."At 2:00 pm the next day, Claire arrived right on time. She wore a white dress and no makeup, and her face was pale. Two influencers followed behind her with their phones raised. The second she stepped inside, she dropped to her knees. "Taylor, please. Just let Adrian and me be together."Th

Kyle walked in carrying a coffee. He wore a white shirt and jeans, with a backpack slung over one shoulder. He looked like the male lead in a college rom-com who had somehow wandered into a messy family drama. He came over, pushed the straw through the lid, and handed me the drink. "Less ice, no sugar."Then he looked at Claire. "And as for her being old, she's 30, and I'm 24. I don't mind, so why the hell do you?"Someone in the shop started clapping. A second later, everyone started laughing.Claire had always been smug about being younger than me. Now a man even younger than her was standing right beside me, making it painfully clear that her age wasn't much of an advantage after all.Claire looked livid. "He's just some boy toy you paid for!"I took a sip of my coffee. "You live off someone else's money and call it true love. I spend my own money on a hot guy, and suddenly I'm his sugar mama? Even if I am, at least I can afford it. Can you?"The scene at my flower shop hit

I used the money I'd recovered to lease a two-story storefront downtown. The first floor was a flower shop, and upstairs I held floral workshops where women could relax and unwind. While the place was being renovated, Kyle came by every day after class. He hauled flowerpots, assembled shelves, reviewed contracts, and even gave the foreman such a hard time for trying to cut corners that the guy probably started rethinking his life choices. One of my employees pulled me aside. "Taylor, seriously? A guy that hot isn't your boyfriend?""No.""Then why is he here every day?""He's interning.""Interning for what?""How to be a decent human being."Kyle walked in just then. "Wrong. I'm interning to be her boyfriend."The whole shop erupted.I grabbed a bunch of baby's breath and tossed it at him.He caught it and tucked it into a nearby vase. "Thanks for the flowers, girlfriend.""Do you have no shame?""Not when I'm trying to win you over."The new shop did over 500,000 dolla

As my love life started looking up, Adrian's life started falling apart. After I received the first three million dollars of my compensation, his company ran out of cash. The investors found falsified numbers during due diligence and immediately backed out. Several suppliers demanded payment at once, and before long, his office was shut down.Adrian sold his car and his watch, but it still wasn't enough. Just when he needed Claire most, she disappeared. She sold off a few designer bags that weren't part of the asset freeze, took the 500,000 dollars in emergency cash Adrian had left with her, and planned to leave town.Maureen caught her at the airport, and the two of them got into a fight in front of everyone.Maureen grabbed Claire by the hair and screamed, "What have we ever done to you? Adrian even got divorced for you, and now you're trying to run?"Claire dropped the act. "His company's going under. What, I'm supposed to stick around and help him pay off his debts?""Aren'

A year later, Taylored Blooms opened its sixth location.I no longer had to run the shops myself. I had floral designers, an operations team, and a dedicated supply chain manager.I hadn't spent the money I recovered in the divorce on bags or cars. I invested it in my own flower farm and built an online floral brand.Adrian used to say my flower shop wouldn't last six months without him. Now his company had been dissolved, while I was selling flowers in 12 cities. He still messaged me every now and then. At first, the messages were angry. Then they turned nostalgic. Eventually, he started begging."Tay, I dreamed about when we first got married."The first meal you made me was terrible, but I still ate every bite."I finally realize you were the one who treated me best."I read the messages and blocked him.Claire refused to return the property, so the court had her condo and car seized and auctioned off.I heard she later got involved with another married businessman.
