RAINE

By the time I got back home to my father's mansion that evening, I was greasy all over. I didn’t even bother to shower first; I just wanted food. Throughout the whole bike ride back, my brain was still replaying my dad’s voice, that condescending tone that made me want to throw a hammer at his head. He really thought he could talk to me like this, instead of like his daughter. His heir, technically. Not that he’d ever call me that out loud.

“Wash your hands before touching anything,” my younger sister Isla said without turning around as I stepped into the large kitchen. She was at the stove, with her wavy auburn hair up in a messy bun, swaying to whatever love song was playing on the radio.

I grinned. “Yes, Mom.”

“Don’t start with me, Raine!" she warned, pointing the spatula behind her without looking. “You always ‘taste test’ half the food before I even plate it.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I mumbled, already reaching for a chicken nugget on the counter. She turned, caught me mid-bite and gasped like I’d committed a crime.

“You’re disgusting!” She shrieked. “Go and shower before dinner, you stink!”

“Wow. Harsh.” I grinned, dodging the spoon she tried to throw at me. “I’m starving.”

“You’re always starving.”

“That’s because you actually cook. Unlike Dad, who thinks whiskey counts as actual food.”

Her laugh died down, and the kitchen felt quiet again. We didn’t talk about Dad much when we were alone, it always ruined the mood. I grabbed a seat on the counter, pretending to scroll through my phone just so I wouldn’t have to look at her face.

Then my phone buzzed and notification popped up at the top.

BANK ALERT: Credit of $10,000.

DESCRIPTION: debt clearance — Iron Serpents. FROM: Cole Maddox.

“What the hell?” I muttered, straightening up.

“What?” Isla came over and peeked over my shoulder. Her eyes went wide. “Raine, who the hell is Cole Maddox?”

“Hell if I know. And what kind of psycho pays ten thousand dollars to cover a seven hundred-dollar debt?”

“Wait.... this is about those guys from Dad’s crew, right?”

“Yeah. But none of their names is Cole anything.” I turned the phone around, still staring at the screen like maybe this was a funny dream. “This has to be a mistake.”

“Or maybe someone finally realized your work is worth more than they pay you, which it is.” Isla teased, bumping her hip into mine. “Girl, maybe the universe is giving you a raise.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, right. The universe owes me a vacation and a new life, not extra zeros in my account.”

Isla sighed and placed her hands on her hips, then pursed her lips in thought. “You know, I think I’ve heard that name before. Cole Maddox… sounds familiar.”

I groaned. “Please, don’t start your gossip column crap again.”

“Oh come on, you never let me have any fun!”

“That’s because your idea of fun is sticking your nose into other people’s business.” I shoved another chicken nugget into my mouth before she could grab the plate away. “I’m serious, Isla. Drop it.”

She crossed her arms, smirking. “You know what? If a hot biker named Cole Maddox shows up at the door looking for you, I’m absolutely telling everyone you’re secretly dating him.”

“I am not—” I stopped mid-sentence, glaring at my sister. “You’re such an idiot.”

She laughed. “Raine, you can’t stay an old maid forever.”

“Old maid? I’m twenty-three!”

“Exactly. Practically ancient in biker years. Dad is probably planning to marry you off to a leather-wearing lunatic soon.”

I groaned, dragging a hand down my face. “Can you not?”

“What?” she said, grin growing wider. “You’re the one who hasn’t even been kissed.”

I almost choked. “What the... Is that what we’re doing now? Publicly shaming me for my virginity?”

“I’m just saying! Maybe Mr. Ten-Thousand-Dollars is trying to buy his way into your—”

“Stop right there.” I pointed a greasy finger at her. “Finish that sentence and I swear I’ll throw you out the window!”

She laughed so hard she had to lean against the counter. “You’re so easy to mess with. Jesus Christ!”

“You’re impossible,” I muttered, hopping off the counter. “I’m not eating anymore. You ruined my appetite.”

“Good, more for meeee!"

I stomped toward the hallway, but she called after me, still laughing. “Goodnight, virgin queen!”

“Go to hell!” I shouted back, flipping her off over my shoulder.

I slammed my bedroom door and stared at my phone again. The numbers hadn’t changed. Ten thousand dollars.

I kicked off my boots, threw my phone on the nightstand and flopped onto the bed face-first. The sheets smelled just like me, which was kind of comforting in a weird way. My brain was still stuck between ten thousand freaking dollars and who the hell is Cole Maddox?

I rolled over and stared at the ceiling. “It’s probably a scam,” I muttered to no one. “A really stupid scam.”

My phone dinged again on the nightstand and I sat up, reaching for it, expecting another spam message about winning a free cruise or something. But it wasn’t that.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: I hope that money made you happy.

My heart did a funny little jump. The contact name was just a number, no photo, no bio, nothing. Just that message sitting there and very unsettling.

“What the hell…” I whispered, sitting up. I read it again. I hope that money made you happy.

The hairs on my arms stood up when I received another text

UNKNOWN NUMBER: You deserved more.

I sat there in total silence, heart thudding in my ears. My fingers hovered over the keyboard as I tried to figure out what to say.

Who is this? I typed, deleted it and typed again: How do you know me?

Before I could send it, the typing bubbles popped up and then disappeared.

“Great,” I muttered, throwing the phone back on the nightstand. “Mysterious stranger with too much money. Exactly what I needed.”

I turned off the lamp, but my eyes stayed open in the dark, staring at the faint glow of my phone screen. Cole Maddox, whoever the hell that was. I didn’t know whether to be freaked out or thankful.

Raine POV No matter how hard I scrub my skin, oil still lingers. Even if I scrub my knuckles until it burns or until the water turns black it never leaves. So I don't bother anymore. This is what I love and I guess certain things come with certain consequences. And this is what I get for playing with oil. Cute girl aesthetics was never really my thing to begin with anyways.I was rinsing my hands behind the shop when I heard the bikes approaching the house.I didn’t need to look up to know it was the Iron serpent returning to the club house. I has grown up with that sound. It was a sound meant to remind the world who owned the road. But my stomach tightened with tension when a small attendant who had just hoi the club rushed to the shop to inform me my dad was calling me in. I shut off the tap and wiped my hands on my jeans, even though it didn’t help. I took in several deep breaths to calm my nerves as I approached the club house. The sun was already dipping low, giving the sky a

Raine's POVI was so embarrassed that I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole. Here I was, a grown woman, standing in a grown man's bedroom while he was half-naked and dripping water everywhere. I tried to look away, but my eyes had other plans. They traveled down his chest, tracing the lines of his toned muscles, the curve of his biceps, the v-line that disappeared into the towel wrapped around his waist. And then God help me, I saw the outline of his penis through the towel.Heat pooled in my stomach, and I forced myself to look up at his face instead."What did you come to ask me?" he questioned, one eyebrow raised.I scrambled for an answer. "Oh, I was just looking for the bathroom."He gestured toward the door on the other side of his room. "Since you're already in here, you can use mine.""Okay," I muttered, practically running toward the bathroom before I embarrassed myself further.I shut the door behind me and leaned against it, pressing my palms to my face. Cole's POVThe second Raine's sister finished that sentence, I stood up and shook my head. "I don't need your help. You two need to leave before you get yourselves killed."But Raine's sister wasn't backing down. She stepped forward, hands on her hips, and launched into what sounded like a prepared speech. "I'm Isla Mercer, younger daughter of Vex Mercer. You probably already know who my father is, considering you guys have been at each other's throats for years. But here's the thing, I can help you more than you realize. I've got connections, resources, friends and—""Stop!" I interrupted, moving toward them. "I appreciate the offer, but no. Get the fuck out of here!"Isla kept talking like I hadn't said a word. "—and if we're being honest here, you're going to need all the help you can get right now. The Reapers and the Iron Serpents are tearing the city apart looking for you, and if you think you can handle that alone, then..."I reached them and started gently pushing them both ba

Raine's POVIsla had been on the phone for twenty minutes already, pacing back and forth near the entrance of the garage. I couldn't hear what she was saying, but I could tell from the way she kept nodding and gesturing with her free hand that she was deep in conversation with someone.I turned my attention back to the bike in front of me. The carburetor was clogged, which explained why the engine kept stalling out. I pulled it apart piece by piece, cleaning out the jets with a thin wire and wiping down the float bowl. It wasn't a complicated fix, but it required patience, and patience was something I was running short on today. I just wanted to get all of this over with, and as soon as possible.I glanced up at Isla again. She was still talking, her voice low and urgent. I guessed she was trying to track down Cole Maddox's address. Isla might be better known for her cooking, but she was equally good at finding people. She had so many tech savvy friends amongst the Iron Serpents and

  • Claimed By My Father’s Outlaw    Chapter 23

Raine's POVThe morning after the Conclave, I tried to get some work done in the garage. Tried being the key word. I had a transmission sitting on the bench that needed rebuilding, but every time I picked up a tool, my brain wandered off somewhere else. I couldn't even sleep last night. The sound of gunshots in my head kept me awake throughout the night. And I could not sleep for the image of Cole Maddox standing there in the bathroom and telling me that he was going to kill his own boss.I set the wrench down for the third time and paced across the concrete floor, my boots scuffing against the oil stains.Isla was perched on the workbench across from me. She had followed me to the garage that day, wearing a denim overall that was way too clean for a garage. She had her legs crossed, watching me calmly."You're not getting anything done, Raine." She pointed out."I know," I muttered, running a hand through my hair. "I can't focus.""Yeah, I can see that."I turned to glare at her, bu

Cole's POVI woke up with my head feeling like someone was taking a sledgehammer to my skull. It was pounding incessantly! My mouth tasted like death, and my stomach was churning so violently that I knew I would throw up right there on the couch. The empty whiskey bottle was still in my hand, and I stared at it for a second before groaning and letting it roll onto the floor. What the hell did I do?I dragged myself upright and checked my wristwatch. 12:49 in the afternoon. Jesus Christ, I'd been out for more than 12 hours! The last thing I remembered was riding out on Raine's bike, and the wind whipping against my face as I tried to outrun everything that had happened. But I didn't remember coming back. I didn't remember stumbling into the house or collapsing on the couch with the bottle."Fuck," I muttered, dragging a hand down my face. My fingers came away slick with sweat.I stood up, wobbling slightly, and cursed again as I made my way to the kitchen. The coffee maker was still si
