Maya's POV

I leaned towards her with untamed curiosity clawing hard at my mind. In my ears, my heart was pounding. "Please tell me how we can find them."

Before an answer could come, a knuckling came at the door, tapping away sharply and unexpectedly.

A sudden skip came to my heart, and Theresa walked to the door. Casual were her footsteps, for we had been discussing some serious stuff. She opened the door wide, and there stood Ben, wearing an easy, boyish grin.

"Your mom's calling," came the smooth voice. "Said dinner's ready," he said with eyes glancing at me suspiciously.

Theresa returned a smile, something soft flickering in her eyes that I couldn't quite understand. Then another small smile lifted her lips toward me. She said, "Let's go downstairs."

I so wanted to say no. I wanted to tell her I wasn't hungry and that she should finish what she had started, but there was no way I was going to be rude with those words. I gave a tight nod and forced my unwilling legs to carry me ou
