The booming war horn rattled the stained-glass windows, sending a vibration straight through the mattress and into my chest. Outside, the night sky burned orange as flames engulfed the castle’s outer courtyard walls.

Julian didn't flinch. He stood tall beside the bed, his bare, muscular torso glowing with golden warrior runes. The intoxicating taste of my pure blood had transformed his energy into something terrifyingly absolute.

The pale vampire woman at the door backed away, her eyes wide with shock. "You declared her your Queen... the High Council will slaughter us all, Julian! Alistair has three war-bands at the gate!"

"Let them try," Julian said, his voice flat, ice-cold, and terrifyingly calm. He turned his head toward her. "Gather the First Corps. Hold the inner courtyard. I will handle Alistair myself."

"And the human?" she pressed, her sharp eyes darting toward me on the bed.

"She stays beside me," Julian growled, his silver-red eyes locking back onto my face. "Now go."

The woman bowed her head quickly and vanished down the stone corridor, her boots echoing against the walls.

I sat up on the edge of the bed, my legs trembling. The sharp bite mark on the palm of my hand throbbed with a strange, pleasurable warmth rather than pain. The Thrall Bond was humming under my skin, making my heart beat in sync with the heavy, powerful pulse radiating off Julian’s body.

"Are you insane?" I demanded, my voice raw as I looked up at him. "You just declared war on your own government for a human you bought two hours ago!"

Julian took two slow steps toward me, closing the distance instantly. He grabbed my wrist, his large, cool hand wrapping around my delicate skin, and pulled me up off the bed. My body slammed against his chest, my bare breasts rising and falling against his rock-hard pectorals.

"I did not declare war for a human," Julian whispered, his mouth hovering inches from my lips. His free hand slid down my spine, cupping the small of my back to pull my hips tight against his heavy, solid heat. "I declared war for what belongs to me. No man in this world takes what is mine."

"I am not a weapon, and I am not your property!" I snapped, my fingers digging into his waist as I tried to hold myself back from melting into his touch.

Every time his body pressed against mine, my skin flushed with heat. It was terrifying how easily his proximity made me forget the burning courtyard outside, forget my uncle’s treason, and forget the lingering threat to my sister. All my body could focus on was the intense, electric friction between his skin and mine.

"Your blood made my warrior runes turn gold, Elena," Julian said, his voice dropping into a thick, primal rumble against my ear. "Do you know what that means?"

"No," I gasped, my head tilting back as his lips brushed along the sensitive arch of my neck.

"It means your blood cured my dead senses," he murmured, his teeth skimming over my pulse point, making a sharp, breathless moan escape my throat. "For three hundred years, I have felt nothing. No warmth. No pleasure. No fire. But when I touch you... when I taste you..."

His hand slid beneath the torn silk of my dress, his cool fingers sliding up the smooth skin of my inner thigh. I gasped, my knees going soft as his thumb caressed the sensitive flesh right below my core. Electric shocks rippled through my lower abdomen, making my hips arch forward into his hand on pure, helpless instinct.

"You feel it too, don't you?" Julian purred against my skin, his fingers slipping higher, making my eyes flutter shut. "Your body knows who its master is."

"Stop..." I breathed, though my fingers knotted tightly into his dark hair, pulling him closer instead of pushing him away. "Julian... please..."

"Say my name again," he commanded, his thumb stroking my wet heat through my lace underwear.

"Julian..."

Before he could pull my silk dress completely off my shoulders, the heavy stone walls of the castle shook violently. A massive explosion detonated below us, blowing open the double oak doors at the end of the master suite.

A cloud of stone dust and black smoke billowed into the room.

Through the haze, four tall enforcers clad in black steel armor stepped forward, holding heavy iron chains glowing with blood-red runes. Behind them stood an older vampire with long silver hair, wearing a high-collared velvet cloak.

Grand Master Alistair.

"Step away from the human, Sovereign Julian," Alistair said, his voice ringing with ancient authority. "By order of the High Council, her bloodline is deemed an illegal threat to the Court. Hand her over, or you will be stripped of your throne."

Julian slowly withdrew his hand from my dress, stepping in front of me to shield my body with his broad frame. His glowing red eyes narrowed, his golden runes flaring with lethal power.

"You step into my private chamber with chains, Alistair?" Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low. "You have forgotten who built this Court."

"You are blinded by her blood!" Alistair snapped, raising a pale hand. "Enforcers, chain him! Kill the human!"

The four enforcers lunged forward at impossible speed, their iron chains whipping through the air like lethal black snakes.

Julian moved even faster. He blurred out of sight, appearing instantly in front of the first two enforcers. With a single, brutal swing of his bare arm, he snapped both of their necks, throwing their lifeless bodies across the room into the stone wall.

The remaining two enforcers swung their rune-covered chains around Julian’s arms, binding his wrists in glowing red iron. The ancient magic sizzled against his skin, smoke rising as the burning metal tried to suppress his power. Julian let out a low, terrifying roar, his muscles bulging as he fought against the binding magic.

"Now!" Alistair shouted, pulling a dark silver dagger from his belt and leaping toward me on the bed. "Die, human abomination!"

My eyes widened in terror. I scrambled backward across the silk sheets, but Alistair was too fast. His hand clamped around my throat, slamming my head back against the carved wooden headboard. The cool metal blade of his dagger pressed directly into the skin of my throat, drawing a single drop of blood.

"Get your hands off her!" Julian roared.

The entire castle room shook as Julian flexed his broad shoulders. With a deafening crack, the heavy iron chains binding his arms shattered into a hundred flying shards.

Julian crossed the room in a split second. He grabbed Alistair by his silver hair and slammed the Grand Master's face onto the marble floor with bone-shattering force. Stone dust kicked into the air as Alistair groaned, his blade slipping from his hand and sliding across the floor.

Julian grabbed Alistair by the throat, lifting the ancient vampire lord off the ground with one hand.

"You dared to lay a hand on my Queen," Julian growled, his voice echoing with demonic authority.

Without hesitation, Julian drove his hand straight through Alistair’s ribs, ripping out his glowing vampire core. Alistair gasped, his body instantly turning into gray ash that scattered across the silk bedsheets.

Silence fell over the destroyed bedroom.

Julian stood among the ash, his chest heaving, his body covered in blood and golden light. He turned his glowing red eyes back to me.

Suddenly, my head began to spin violently. The drop of blood Alistair had drawn from my neck was dripping down my collarbone, but it wasn't normal red blood anymore—it was glowing with a strange, faint golden luminescence.

The moment Julian saw the golden light on my skin, his eyes widened slightly.

Before I could ask what was happening to me, a sudden, blinding agony exploded inside my abdomen. I screamed out loud, clutching my waist as my body collapsed onto the bed. A burning mark was etching itself into the skin above my hipbone—a glowing golden crest shaped like Julian’s warrior runes.

Julian dropped to his knees on the bed, pulling me into his arms as I gasped for air.

"The Sun-Mark..." Julian whispered, his voice filled with genuine shock as he stared at the glowing crest burning through my skin. "The bond is complete."

Outside the shattered windows, the horn sounded again, but this time it wasn't just the High Council—a massive army of rogue vampire warlords was marching over the hill toward the burning gates.

And my body was burning alive from the inside out.

There was no time for hesitation, no room for second thoughts.
