The second hand on the silver clock ticked with a heavy, hollow sound.

Clara stood frozen by the edge of the marble table, her eyes locked on Alexander. Her mind raced. If she walked out that door right now, Hayes Architecture would be gone before lunch. Her father’s memory, his life's work, and the livelihood of thirty employees would be erased.

"Ten seconds, Miss Hayes," Alexander said softly, his voice showing no emotion at all.

He didn't look nervous. He didn't look excited. He just sat there like a man playing a game of chess he had already won.

Clara swallowed hard, forcing the lump down her throat. She stepped back toward the table, reached into her purse, and pulled out her own black ink pen.

"I will sign," Clara said, her voice tight but firm. "On three conditions."

Alexander raised an eyebrow, leaning forward slightly. "You are hardly in a position to make conditions."

"I am the one signing my name to this life for two years," Clara countered, staring right into his dark eyes. "If this is a business arrangement, then we treat it like one."

A faint, amused glint passed through Alexander’s eyes. He gestured toward her with his hand. "Speak."

"First, this contract stays strictly professional," Clara said, listing her demands clearly. "Separate bedrooms. No forced physical intimacy of any kind when we are behind closed doors."

"Agreed," Alexander said without hesitation. "I am looking for a partner to satisfy my board, not a real wife. Next?"

"Second, my work at Hayes Architecture comes first," Clara continued. "You will clear our debts as promised, but you will not interfere with my restoration projects or try to run my father's company."

"Granted," he replied. "I have an empire to run. I have no interest in micro-managing your blueprints."

"Third," Clara said, taking a deep breath, "when the two years are up, we walk away. Clean break. No lingering ties, no public drama, and full control of Hayes Architecture stays with me."

Alexander stared at her for a long moment. The room went completely silent again. For a second, Clara thought he might refuse. But then he reached out, picked up his gold pen, and flipped to the last page of the contract.

"Add those three points to the special addendum page," Alexander instructed calmly.

Clara didn't wait. She leaned over the table and wrote the three conditions at the bottom of the page in clear, precise handwriting. Once she finished, she pressed her pen to the line marked Party B and signed her name: Clara Hayes.

The moment the ink dried, a strange sense of finality washed over her. It was done. She had just sold two years of her life to a stranger.

She slid the paper back across the table. Alexander picked it up, skimmed her additions, and signed his own name at the bottom with a quick, practiced stroke.

Alexander Sterling.

"Congratulations, Miss Hayes," Alexander said, closing the folder. "Or rather, my future bride. You just saved your family."

"I saved my father's work," Clara corrected, pulling her jacket tightly around herself. "Now, if we are done here, I have a project meeting at my office."

"We are not done," Alexander said, standing up from his chair.

He was much taller than her, his presence instantly taking over the large space. He adjusted his suit jacket, smooth and composed, before checking his watch again.

"Your items will be moved to my penthouse by six o'clock tonight," he said, walking around the long table toward her. "My driver will pick you up from your office at five."

Clara blinked, taking a step back. "Tonight? Alexander, I need time to pack. I need to explain things to my team—"

"Our public timeline starts today," Alexander interrupted, stopping just a few feet away from her. "My board meets tomorrow morning. They need to see that my personal life is completely settled. A separate apartment will raise questions we don't need."

"You could have warned me," she said through gritted teeth.

"Consider this your warning," he replied smoothly.

Before Clara could argue any further, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open. Alexander's assistant walked in, holding a tablet in her hands.

"Mr. Sterling," the assistant said quickly, looking slightly flustered. "The press team is downstairs in the lobby. The reporters from the financial news channels saw Miss Hayes enter the building earlier. They are asking questions about the debt buyout."

Clara's stomach dropped. "Reporters? How do they already know about the buyout?"

Alexander didn't look surprised at all. In fact, his face remained entirely calm, as if everything was happening according to a plan he had written weeks ago.

"Tell them we will make a short statement in five minutes," Alexander told his assistant.

"Yes, Mr. Sterling," the assistant said, bowing her head before stepping back out into the hallway.

Clara turned to face Alexander, her cheeks hot with rising anger. "You planned this. You called the media before I even walked into this room!"

"I prepare for every outcome, Clara," Alexander said, using her first name for the very first time. The sound of it on his lips made a strange shiver run down her spine. "If you had said no, the press would have reported the foreclosure. Since you said yes, they will report something else."

"We haven't even worked out what we're going to say!" Clara said, her voice rising. "I am not going down there to play pretend in front of dozens of cameras!"

Alexander walked up to her, closing the small gap between them. He didn't touch her, sticking strictly to her rule, but his proximity was overwhelming. He smelled faintly of expensive cedarwood and cold rain.

"You don't have to say a word," Alexander murmured, looking down into her eyes. "Just stand by my side and look convincing. That is what I am paying twelve million dollars for."

Clara clenched her jaw, holding his gaze. "You are insufferable."

"And you are late for your public debut," Alexander replied softly.

He turned toward the door, gesturing for her to walk ahead of him. Clara took a deep breath, smoothing down her skirt, and stepped out into the hallway.

Five minutes later, they stepped out of the executive elevator into the main lobby.

The glass doors of the building were surrounded by a wall of bright flashes and loud shouting. Dozens of reporters pressed against the security barrier, holding microphones and cameras, all trying to catch a glimpse of the city's most powerful man.

Security guards held the crowd back, clearing a path toward a black SUV waiting at the curb.

The moment Alexander and Clara walked through the glass doors, the noise exploded.

"Mr. Sterling! Is it true Sterling Global bought out Hayes Architecture?"

"Miss Hayes! Is your father's firm facing complete bankruptcy?"

"Are you liquidating the company, Mr. Sterling?"

Clara felt her hands start to tremble under the blinding flashes of light. She had never been surrounded by media like this before. The noise was deafening, the questions cutting right at her deepest fears.

Suddenly, a warm, heavy weight rested on the small of her back.

Alexander stepped closer, his hand resting gently against her waist—close enough to look affectionate to the cameras, but respectful enough not to cross her boundary. His steady presence behind her was like an anchor in the middle of a storm.

They reached the waiting SUV. The driver opened the rear door for them.

Alexander stopped right in front of the door. He turned toward the crowd of reporters, his dark eyes sweeping over the flashing cameras. The entire lobby seemed to fall silent, waiting for his words.

"Hayes Architecture is not going bankrupt," Alexander announced, his voice carrying clearly over the crowd. "And Sterling Global is not liquidating their assets."

A female reporter leaned forward, raising her microphone. "Then why buy the debt, Mr. Sterling? What is your relationship with Clara Hayes?"

Alexander looked down at Clara, a slow, deliberate shadow of a smile touching his lips.

"Miss Hayes and I are getting married," Alexander said calmly to the crowd. "In three weeks."

Gasps echoed through the crowd, followed by a sudden frantic wave of camera flashes.

Clara’s heart stopped.

The heavy desk was the only barrier standing between them and the three men blocking the study door.Alexander didn't hesitate. In one smooth motion, he grabbed the thick edge of the desk and shoved it forward with all his strength, slamming it directly into the two lead men. The sudden impact sent them stumbling backward into the narrow hallway, creating a brief, frantic opening."Clara, the window, go!" Her heart was beating so hard it felt like it was going to crack her ribs.Alexander grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp and hurled it through the tall glass window at the back of the room. The glass shattered with a deafening crash, scattering sharp, sparkling shards across the wooden porch outside."Get out! I'm right behind you!" he command

Elena stared at the black sedan rear handle for two full seconds before pulling it open. It was barely eight in the morning, but the humidity was already thick enough to stick her hair to the back of her neck. She dropped into the plush leather seat, expecting to find an empty car or at least a quiet driver.Instead, Julian was sitting right beside her, an iPad resting in his lap, scrolling through market reports as if he hadn't slept at all."You're late by two minutes," he said without looking up.Elena’s jaw tightened. She slammed the door a little harder than necessary. "The elevator in my apartment building was stuck on the third floor. Again. Some of us don't live in penthouses with private lifts, Mr. Vance."Julian finally paused, turning his head slowly toward her. His dark eyes took in her faded jeans, her oversized sweater, and the faint dark circles under her eyes that no amount of cold water had been able to wash away."That'll be fixed by tonight," he said casually, signa

Emergency vehicles lined the street in front of Sterling Tower, their red and blue lights flashing against the surrounding skyscrapers. Security guards surrounded Alexander and Clara as they stepped out of the private side exit, shielding them from a small crowd of late night reporters who had gathered near the perimeter tape.Alexander didn't slow his pace. His hand remained wrapped securely around Clara's waist, guiding her straight toward the back seat of a blacked-out SUV."Get in," he said, his voice flat and commanding.Clara slid onto the leather seat, pulling her coat tight around herself. Alexander climbed in right behind her, shutting the door heavy against the noise of the street. Thomas hopped into the front passenger seat, turning around immediately with a tablet in hand."Sir, police are requesting a statement regarding the sub basement intruder," Thomas reported quickly. "And Vance Holdings' PR team just issued a release claiming Marcus Vance was out of the country toni

The silence inside the vault was immediate and heavy. When the massive steel door slammed shut, the light vanished completely. Pitch blackness swallowed the small room, thick and heavy, like being buried alive beneath tons of concrete and rock.Clara gasped, her heart jumping straight into her throat. "Alexander?""I'm right here," his voice came out of the darkness, surprisingly calm and steady.A second later, the sharp beam of the flashlight clicked back on, slicing through the gloom. Alexander lowered the beam so it didn't blind her, pointing it toward the solid metal door.Clara rushed past him, her hands slamming against the cold steel surface. She felt around frantically for a handle, a switch, or a release button, anything. But the inner side of the door was completely smooth."There's no handle," she said, her voice shaking as fear began to claw at her chest. "Alexander, there’s no way to open it from the inside!""Step back, Clara," he commanded softly. He stepped up to the

Alexander’s face turned into a wall of cold stone. He grabbed the heavy silver key and the folded note off the desk, sliding them into his pocket with one swift motion."Get your coat," he said, his voice dropping into a harsh, sharp tone. "We're going to Sterling Tower.""I'm coming with you," Clara said instantly. She didn't wait for his permission. She pulled a dark trench coat over her evening dress and followed him out to the private elevator. The drive back to the financial district was spent in total silence. Rain hammered against the windshield of the SUV as the driver ran every red light on the empty avenue. Beside her, Alexander stared straight ahead, his jaw clenched tightly.Ten minutes later, the SUV slammed to a halt inside the underground parking garage of Sterling Tower. Red emergency lights were flashing against the concrete walls, and a loud, pulsing alarm echoed through the massive space. Two armed security guards ran up to the car the moment Alexander stepped out.

Clara’s heart did a strange flip. She looked from the thick yellow envelope in Thomas’s hands straight to Alexander."A vault?" Clara repeated, her voice cutting through the cool air. "My father was an architect, not a treasure hunter. Why would he build a vault beneath Sterling Global?"Alexander didn't answer her immediately. He took the envelope from Thomas, his knuckles white against the paper. The calm, untouchable persona he had worn all evening cracked for a second, revealing something far darker beneath."Go back inside, Thomas," Alexander ordered, his tone flat. “Make sure no one else sees this report.""Yes, Mr. Sterling," Thomas said, bowing his head quickly before rushing back into the warmth of the ballroom.Once the glass doors clicked shut, Clara turned on Alexander, taking a step closer. "Talk to me. What is going on? What does my father have to do with your building?"Alexander unsealed the envelope and pulled out a stack of old, faded blueprints alongside several bl
