ARIA POV

I don’t sleep.

The house is too big and too quiet. And my brain won’t shut up.

At 2:13am I give up and pad down to the kitchen. Socks, hoodie, hair in a knot. I just want water.

The lights are low. Someone’s already there.

Dante.

He’s at the stove in sweatpants and a black tee, stirring something in a pot.

“You’re up,” he says without looking.

“Can’t sleep,” I say. “You?”

“Same.”

He gestures to the stool at the island. “Sit.”

I do. The kitchen smells like garlic and butter and somethin

Aria POV1:00pm.The TV in the living room is on. I can hear it through the door.I’m still on the floor in my mother’s guest room. Marco is still in the doorway.“Turn it up,” Nico says downstairs. His voice is rough.I don’t move. The anchor’s voice is too cheerful for this.“Breaking news from Chicago. At a press conference just starting now, Isabella Vale is addressing federal allegations against Caruso Industries and announcing a merger with the Moretti family. Four Moretti brothers are present.”My stomach drops.Four.Not five.I close my eyes.On the TV, Isabella steps up to the podium. Black suit. Hair perfect. She looks like a weapon.Behind her: Marco, Nico, Enzo, Dante. All in black. No ties. No smiles.“Thank you for coming,” Isabella says. Her voice is calm. Deadly calm.“At noon today, Vale Enterprises submitted evidence to the FBI regarding fraud, money laundering, and racketeering within Caruso Industries. Effective immediately, Vale Enterprises is severing all busine

Aria POVVale Tower. 42nd floor. My mother’s guest room. It’s 12:17pm.The room doesn’t smell like anything. The Moretti house smelled like garlic and coffee and Luca’s soap and the lemon cleaner Nico used after he cooked. This room smells like hotel sheets and cold air and money I didn’t earn. It’s clean and empty and it makes my chest ache.I’m on the floor with my back against the bed, knees pulled up, arms locked around them. I haven’t made a sound in 40 minutes.Downstairs, Isabella is in the war room with the feds. She left the Moretti house as soon as I called her from the lobby. Dragged all 4 of them with her because they refused to let me come here alone. Marco is in my mother’s kitchen. I heard a plate break about 10 minutes ago. Nico is in the gym hitting the bag over and over. Enzo and Dante are in the study with phones pressed to their ears, moving money, moving pieces. All 4 of them followed me here after the bridge. No one is in here.Because I said, “Give me space.”So

Aria POV5:43am.The city is the color of bruises.Blue and black and waiting to break. The Wacker bridge is empty. No cars. No people. Just the river below and the wind cutting through me.I’m alone because Victoria said "alone" or she’d send the photos to my mother first.I left my phone in the apartment. I told no one where I was going. If I’m going down, I’m not taking them with me.Heels on concrete.Victoria.Red coat. Hair pulled back. 23 and sharp enough to cut.She stops exactly 10 feet from me. Like there’s a line between us and she won’t cross it.“You came,” she says.“You gave me 48 hours,” I say. “I don’t run.”She tilts her head. Studies me.“I don’t hate you, Aria Wells,” she says. “I hate that you exist.”The words land like a slap. She pulls a folder from her bag.Inside: one piece of paper.*MARRIAGE CONTRACT**Victoria Caruso to Luca Moretti*Signed at the bottom. Not by Luca. By Mr. Caruso.“My father filed this an hour ago,” she says. “It’s a merger. Business and

Aria POVThe clock says 1:17am.I haven’t slept. No one has.The house feels different tonight. Tighter. Like we’re all holding our breath and waiting for it to break.“48 hours,” Isabella says. She’s standing at the head of the table. No suit. Just black pants and a white shirt. Hair in a clip. She looks more dangerous like this.“The contract was filed an hour ago,” she continues. “Extortion. Threats. Mention of the warehouse. We have enough.”“So why are we waiting,” Marco asks.“Because Mr. Caruso has 48 hours to respond to our terms,” Isabella says. “After that, the feds knock. And we don’t do this halfway.”Luca hasn’t spoken in 20 minutes. He’s next to me. His thumb is rubbing circles on the back of my hand under the table. He’s not looking at anyone. He’s looking at me.“Terms?” I ask.“If he signs over the warehouse and steps down from 3 board seats, we don’t go public,” Isabella says. “If he doesn’t, we burn him.”Nico whistles. “Damn. Cold.”“It’s war,” Isabella says. “Cold

Victoria POVI’m 23 and I’m tired of being called “the spare.”The house is quiet in a way that means my father is home.No staff talking. No music. No clink of glasses from the bar.Just the tick of the grandfather clock in the hall. Counting. It’s 11pm. He’s in his study. Door open.I can smell the whiskey from the hallway. And paper. Old files. My file.“Victoria.” He doesn’t look up when I walk in. “You met with the girl.”“She’s not a girl,” I say. “She’s 21. And she came.”He finally looks at me. Gray eyes. Same as mine. Same sharp cut to the jaw. He’s 58 and he still looks like he could break a man in half with one hand.“And? Did you scare her?”I drop into the leather chair across from him.“I told her the truth,” I say. “Walk away from Luca Moretti or we burn it down.”He sets the glass down. Ice clinks.“You’re not burning anything yet.”I laugh. It comes out sharp and ugly. “That’s what you said 2 weeks ago. While we sat and waited. While she opened a restaurant across fro

Aria POV“Absolutely not.”Luca’s voice cuts through the kitchen. Final.I’m standing by the island with my phone in my hand. Victoria’s text is still on the screen._8am. The Bean & Bloom. 5th and Halsted. Come alone._“It’s a trap,” Enzo says from the couch. He doesn’t even look up from the monitors.“Obviously,” Nico agrees. He’s spinning a knife on the table. “She wants you isolated.”“She wants me scared,” I say.No one argues with that.Isabella walks in from her office. She’s already dressed. Power suit. Heels. Hair pulled back tight.“What’s the move,” she asks.Luca looks at me. Only me.“You don’t go.”I meet his eyes. Dark. Tired. Protective in a way that makes my chest hurt.“I have to,” I say.“No.”“She has photos of my dad, Luca. What if she releases them? What if she edits them? What if she says he was with her?”“Then we deal with it,” he says. “After the feds have her.”“By then the damage is done,” I say. My voice shakes but I don’t let it. “I need to see what she w
