CLEO GARCIA

Today was shaping up to be a long, demanding day.

When Marco and I woke up this morning, we hit the ground running, getting ready for everything ahead.

We each had our tasks, and everything needed to go smoothly. If even one thing went wrong, we risked losing everything we’d been working toward.

At some point, Isa called me. She had a lot of questions about Enzo.

“I’m all alone, Cleo. I don’t even have you anymore,” Isa had said over the phone, her words sharp with hurt.

I had felt a pang in my chest and quickly left the room, searching for a quiet spot to talk. I stepped into the library, and closed the door softly behind me for privacy.

“Why would you say that?” I’d asked Isa, my voice soft but confused, as I leaned against the door. “Ethan’s been in the hospital for two weeks, Cleo. Have you even come to see him? You know who else hasn’t shown up? Enzo. And Ethan keeps asking for him, over and over,” Isa said, letting out a heavy sigh.

Her words hit hard, and gu

ENZO MORETTIIsa took off her shoes as soon as I turned off the engine. She had been quiet for most of the ride to the funeral home. She hadn’t answered her mum’s calls either, but now she was dialing a number.I could already guess who she was calling.“We’re here, love,” I said, taking the keys out of the ignition and catching them in my hand.Isa hushed me and showed me her screen. She was calling Emiliana. My throat tightened as I leaned back in my seat. Her mother’s voice came through the speaker.“What did I ever do to you as a kid, Isabella?” Emiliana asked, clearly frustrated from not getting to her daughter sooner. The silence of this neighborhood was so heavy that even a pin dropping would have been loud.Isa kicked off her trainers and curled up in the seat, folding her legs beside her.She pressed her phone’s side button until her mum’s voice was too faint for me to hear.“A lot of things. Do you want to get into them now?” Isabella said. Her lips quivered, reacting to som

ISABELLA GARCIA“I don’t want to see. Can you blindfold me?” I asked Enzo.He paused and leaned back, studying me. His eyes felt like they were scraping my skin, and the tension between us thickened.“That’s new,” Enzo said, a small grin forming on one side of his lips. “Are you sure that’s what you want?”I rolled my eyes and fell back onto the bed. “If I tell you to do something, I mean it. Stop with the extra check-ins. I’m not a baby.”A part of me disagreed with that, and I wrestled with her inside my head.Enzo was watching me, almost laughing. “Are you good, my love?” he asked.I rolled my eyes again, biting the inside of my mouth before pulling him closer. Our lips almost touched, but I kept a little space between us.Holding his gaze, I gave him my rules.“I want you to blindfold me. I want you to tie me to this bed and pleasure me. I want to shake and cry because I can’t handle it. I want to stop seeing his face.”Enzo’s expression hardened. He pushed himself up, leaning on

ENZO MORETTI“Yes, please,” Isa said over the phone.Isa was curled up on the couch, knees tucked beneath her and body bent to the side. I walked in, my boots thudding against the floor. When we were together, the silence in the room was so heavy it felt unbearable. She didn’t lift her head to acknowledge me.I moved cautiously, keeping close to the walls as I headed for the small shelf in the corner.“No, it’s just me. I’m his only guardian with the right of disposition,” Isa said, twisting the phone wire between her fingers. Her toes curled, and she sank deeper into the seat. There was a long pause as she listened to the call, breathing softly and nodding.I set the lunch on the table and pulled a stool before her. Her eyes were red and bright.“How soon can we get it done?” Isa asked the person she was talking to on the line, turning away from me.I leaned forward on my knee, waiting patiently. I wasn’t Ethan’s legal guardian, but I wanted to help her with the funeral. Isa needed t

ISABELLA GARCIAFifteen hours, forty minutes, and ten seconds. That’s how long it’s been since I last held my baby’s hands.I was out for barely an hour, and Ethan…he never came back. That was it.The doctors said it was fast, and I want that to be my focus. I want to be grateful that he didn’t suffer.I’m his mother. How can I make this anything less than sad? How can I find a silver lining when my world is gone?Enzo was always at home. When he wasn’t in the main house, he was in the smaller quarters or out on the balcony. The furthest he ever went was the mall at the end of our street. It was a five-minute drive, and he’d come back full of questions. How are you? What do you want for dinner? Can I do anything to help? Talk to me. Please. Isabella, are you there?I shook my head just thinking about it. Anger rose in the back of my throat.I was angry. I had been angry since it happened. It wasn’t the kind of anger that made you want to smash things. It was heavier, colder.I hated

MARCO MARTINS “Let’s go, baby,” I said to Cleo, resting my hand on the small of her back. Cleo turned to Isa. “Are you sure you don’t want me to stay with you?” she asked. The thing was, Isa hadn’t said a single word about her son’s death and it had been hours. Isa turned around, her hands tucked deep into the sleeves of her kitten cardigan. With every passing second, she seemed to shrink further into herself. It was hard to watch, even for someone who didn’t like her. Isa shook her head, waved at Cleo, and we started toward the car. “Babe,” I called, but Cleo’s eyes stayed fixed on the back of Isa’s head even as I led her away. “If you guys had gotten here on time, you would have saved him,” Cleo told me. Her voice was low and sharp. She turned and glared at me as she freed herself from my grasp. “Where did you keep your phone, babe?” she asked with a smile that made me swallow hard. She “We were in a meeting,” I said, frustration slipping into my voice. “I’ve

Cleo had been quiet, but as soon as Marco came over, she turned to him. “Where did you keep your phone?” she asked. Then she turned to me, adding, “Where do the two of you keep your phones? Isn’t it supposed to be your phone for a reason?” “Cleo, you’re stressed,” Marco said, trying to hold her, but she pulled away from his grip. “And you’re both not stressed enough,” she shot back, spitting the words out. She held her head in her hands. “How did this happen?” Just then, the doctor walked out, stealing everyone’s attention. We all turned to her at once, desperate for news. “We’ve finished doing a full exam on her,” the doctor said in a professional, detached tone. “She needs to rest for a few hours before she’s back on her feet.” “Can we see her?” I asked. “Absolutely.” “And the little boy? How’s he?” I added. I caught a flicker of detachment in the doctor’s face, and something els
